The event, sponsored by the Trout in the Classroom Program, encourages students to engage in stream habitat study, appreciate water resources and understand ecosystems.

Imagine Awards Winners entries were submitted for consideration in five categories, including Innovation, Leadership Excellence, Social Entrepreneurism, Rising Star, and Social Impact.

The COPE Foundation is one of four finalists in the Leadership Excellence Award category for its President and Founder Lillian Julien.

The death of a child is the most devastating loss. Yet Lillian Julien rose above the loss of her daughter Michelle in 1996 to found an organization whose purpose is to support other families living in similar circumstances.

Shortly after Michelle’s death, Lillian’s daughter came to her in a dream letting her know she was okay but persuading her with the words, “you need to help each other.”

Michelle’s message became Lillian’s mission—to create a healing center where parents and siblings

could come together for emotional support and a variety of healing modalities. But Lillian didn’t stop with a vision; she turned vision into reality. She first created a spiritual center within her temple, which later became COPE. Recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization in 1999, COPE has grown from a select group of families meeting in each other’s homes to a support network of over 1,000 families gathering and healing in generously donated space as well as a dedicated COPE House in Eisenhower Park.

COPE helps bereaved parents, adult siblings and children heal after devastating losses through professionally-facilitated bereavement support groups; alternative healing therapies (like yoga, Reiki, Tai Chi, meditation, art and music therapy, and writing and spirituality workshops); professional

workshops for mental health professionals, schools, clergy and funeral homes; a grief hotline; and Camp Erin® NYC, a bereavement camp for children ages 6-17 dealing with the loss of someone close to them, including concurrent parent camp.

Lilly works actively on a daily basis to not only provide support to the COPE families who turn to her for that purpose, but also to guide and spread the word about COPE and its mission and to spearhead fundraising efforts. Lilly continues to be the driving force behind COPE, serving as board president, chief fundraiser and even facilitator of the organization’s art/creative expression workshops.

She is also the author of GriefQuest, a workbook for grieving parents, and speaks at conferences across the country. In 2008, Lillian was inducted into the Long Island Volunteer

Hall of Fame under the auspices of the Long Island Volunteer Center, and in 2014, she accepted the Roger E. Joseph prize from Hebrew Union College for her work with Camp Erin NYC. Previous recipients include Victor Kugler, who sheltered Anne Frank’s family, Rosa Parks and Daniel Pearl.

“Lilly’s work has a definite social impact,” said Karen Flyer, COPE’s Executive Director. “Families who are able to heal from their profound grief are able to give back to their families, workplaces and society and mentor other families living with loss. Lillian’s innovative model for COPE empowers families who initially come for support to eventually become volunteers and stewards for the organization. The next level of healing is helping, and Lilly has both achieved that for herself, and inspired others within COPE to do the same.”

The COPE Foundation, Inc. (“COPE”), a nonprofit grief and healing organization dedicated to helping parents and families living with the loss of a child, was named a Finalist in the Leadership Excellence Award category in The 4th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards.

The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations.

Last year’s event attracted over 400 attendees from the nonprofit and business communities and an even larger crowd is expected this year. Winners will be announced LIVE at the awards gala at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016.

555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life.

Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say.

Voluminous? Without a doubt.

I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next…

Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it.

A bit uneven? Surely.

Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years?

Absolutely.

And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one.

How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so.

Calling All Boomers The Middle Country Public Library will host the Calling All Boomers and Seniors Products and Service Fair on Tuesday, April 21st.

The annual event, held in partnership with Assemblyman Al Graf, showcases recreational and informational resources including providing complementary blood pressure testing and therapeutic massage, senior travel groups, elder law, wellness counselors and home health care.

This is a free event, which is open to the public and runs from 3-6 p.m. at the library’s Centereach location on Eastwood Boulevard.

In rural states, Beagles and other hounds are routinely abandoned, starved or even shot when not deemed worthwhile hunting dogs. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, partner shelters like Daviess County in Kentucky have dramatically been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. In 2008, 90 percent of the dogs and cats at Daviess were euthanized. Now the dog figure is much lower, less than 10 percent.

“In 2009, Daviess County approached us about saving a hound named Valentine they had nursed back to health,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope Animal Rescue.

“This was the beginning of our commitment to take several Daviess dogs a month. By 2014, we were working with three Kentucky and one Virginia

shelter on a regular basis.

In 2014, and again in 2015, we placed over one hundred dogs from these shelters.

Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to rescue more Southern dogs, and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. Some are special needs dogs like Daisy a Black and Tan Coonhound who needed an eye removed due to glaucoma, and Henry a Redbone Coonhound who lost a leg after being hit by a car. Henry visits a nursing home with his owner as a therapy dog now. With our generous Petco Foundation grant, we can continue to make a difference for dogs and people at home, plus dogs from faraway.”

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. today announced it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support our collaborative effort with several county shelters in Kentucky and Virginia to bring dogs in need (mainly hounds that would be euthanized) to the Last Hope Dog Adoption Center in Wantagh where they will be readily adopted.

Last Hope is a nonprofit organization with a mission to save deathdue, abandoned and stray animals. Besides assisting needy dogs in Long Island municipal shelters, Last Hope has developed a partnership with several shelters and transport networks in Kentucky and Virginia, where Last Hope renews hope for discarded dogs that otherwise do not stand a chance. Since 1981, Last Hope has been striving to improve the quality of life for homeless pets, and to provide community outreach services and spay/neuter initiatives for feral cats.

Last Hope placed 260 dogs and 575 cats in loving, responsible homes in 2015.

The Catholic Health Services Second Annual Marathon will be run on October 30th, with a full marathon, a half marathon and a newly added 5K. Net proceeds will again go to benefit local veterans’ services.

The race will be followed by the Freedom Fest, which will feature local produced foods, awardwinning wines and beers, and live entertainment.

The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo officially opens for the season the weekend of Saturday, April 16th and Sunday, April 17th. Now in its 47th season, the park has long provided Long Island students and families with a wide array of animals, education, and most of all fun. As part of its opening celebrations, the zoo will once again have an array of baby animals in the nursery barn during its springtime hours.

The Game Farm will be open from Thursday to Sunday, April 21st to 24th and Wednesday to Sunday from April 27th to May 1st.

The park will be open on a limited schedule in early May and will ultimately

be open seven days a week beginning Wednesday, May 25th. For information regarding dates and hours of operation, please see the events calendar on the Game Farm’s website.

In addition to hand feeding and petting its animals, the Game Farm is excited to announce its new Ranger Eric Live Animal Show, which is being held at 1 p.m. on May 14th and May 21st.

Suffolk County officials announced Thursday, March 24th the names of organizations that have been chosen to receive funds from the proceeds of the first annual Suffolk County Marathon.

Nineteen organizations received awards ranging from $2,500 to $23,600 from the nearly $160,000 net proceeds from the September 13th, 2015 race. Recipients were chosen by the Suffolk

Heroes of the Game Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislator Steve Stern, the Long Island Ducks and New York Community Bank jointly announce the return of the Heroes of the Game program for the second consecutive season, which will publicly honor local veterans and active duty service men and women during all home games this season. More than 125 local veterans and active military personnel were honored during the 2015 season.

“Suffolk County is home to nearly 100,000 veterans,

the largest veterans population in New York State. It is our obligation to provide our local heroes with the services they need once they come back home,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

“The Heroes of the Game program is a wonderful way for thousands of local baseball fans each game to learn about our heroes’ stories and as a way to say thank you to our veterans for the sacrifices they have made to protect our freedom.”

and the Long Island Ducks to honor our veterans is a home run,” Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern said.

“Our veterans are not only the Heroes of the Game, they are our heroes every day and it is an honor for all of us to say thank you in such a meaningful way.”

On Wednesday, April 6th, countless numbers of Long Islanders will lace up their sneakers and walk to commemorate the annual American Heart Association’s National Walking Day. The Long Island Health Collaborative will be holding their National Walking Day event at Eisenhower Park at 9:30 a.m. A press event will be held at the Ice Rink followed by a walk around

the lake.

Hundreds of walkers are expected.

And this year, there’s a fun way to participate nationally: everyone who walks on April 6th can “donate” their minutes walked to the AHA by posting their minutes on social media at #AHALaceUp. All minutes posted there will count toward a national total goal of 100,000 minutes walked.

Updates and highlights will be posted all day at

#AHALaceUp. Studies have suggested that moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for an individual’s overall health, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL or “good” cholesterol and controlling weight. All these changes help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers.

Broken down into weekly themes, the American

Heart Association will kick-off the month-long campaign on National Walking Day to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle by increasing their physical activity routines.

Week one focuses on walking and the basic tools you need to get started.

Because it’s easy, free and low-risk, walking is the simplest form of exercise you can do and the gateway exercise to other, more vigorous, activities. Week

24-Hour Hotline In yet another partnership with County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Government, on April 1st 2016, LICADD launched a 24-hour assistance line where a live LICADD clinician can be reached to assist Long Islanders who are in need of services for substance use disorders (SUD). As the public health crisis continues to adversely impact a multitude of Long Island families and communities, LICADD is proud to offer 24 hour assistance to those individuals and families in need of support, counseling and referrals to quality healthcare facilities for a host of treatment options for substance use disorders.

LICADD’s full-service

substance abuse hotline will serve as what officials called a lifeline to residents battling drug addiction, which lawmakers have been struggling to address across Long Island for years. To get there, the county teamed up with community partners in the substance abuse field to allow residents to call to get screenings, referrals and follow-ups.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will operate the 24-hour hotline and direct callers to those resources. Providing a single phone number to call for a myriad of resources and services is key to assisting those who are battling addiction and their families, officials said.

“Like many places in this

country, Suffolk County is facing an opioid epidemic of historic proportions,” County Executive Steve Bellone said in a statement. “We need to tackle this epidemic on all fronts - including prevention, treatment and law enforcement.” Bellone said his administration has made it a top priority to “explore and launch new, evidence-based tools” to help address the region’s fight against heroin and opioid use. “The creation of a local 24/7 hotline is now another tool in our arsenal to assist those who are battling opioid and heroin addiction and their families,” he said.

The hotline will become live by April 1st, Bellone said, and the Suffolk County health department

will provide oversight and analyze data to monitor its effectiveness and identify trends and emerging issues in the community.

Take a walk in Eisenhower Park (East Meadow) on Wednesday, April 6th, National Walking Day, with the Nassau County and Suffolk County Health Commissioners, Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein and Dr. James Tomarken, respectively. They will lead members of the public and the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) on a two-mile walk (rain or shine). The walk begins at the park’s ice rink at 9:30 a.m., where the commissioners will hold a press event on the day marked by the American Heart Association that celebrates walking and all its healthful benefits.

The LIHC chose the Eisenhower Park location (Merrick Avenue entrance) because this area has undergone renovation and upgrade to make the sidewalk and paths more walkable and accessible.

The improvements are part of the county’s Department of Public Works’ Complete Streets policy – a public policy which the LIHC supports in its efforts to

get more people walking.

To promote both healthy habits and awareness about the walkability that Complete Streets lend to residents, members of the LIHC and the health commissioners ask “Are You Ready, Feet?” This is the collaborative’s walkability initiative that is also debuting April 6th.

It offers walkers/exercisers an opportunity to log into the collaborative’s website www.lihealthcollab.org and post their step/miles walked/moved and to compete for prizes.

Countless studies suggest that moderate physical activity has proven benefits for an individual’s overall health, such as maintaining blood pressure, controlling weight, and promoting emotional stability. These improvements can help control and prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

Reduction of chronic diseases, especially those related to obesity, is the overarching goal of the LIHC.

The American Heart Association, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recommends that adults participate in at least 150 minutes of moderately intense physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorously intense physical activity or a combination of both each week.

Members of the Long Island Health Collaborative invite friends, family, community members, and local organizations to join them and the health commissioners for a celebratory walk in the park. There is no fee and no registration necessary.

Just show up with your feet and sneakers.

Participants can enter and park near the southwest Merrick Avenue entrance of the park and attend the press event in the lobby of the ice rink.

Art League Honorees The Art League of Long Island’s juried exhibition “Motion in Art and Art in Motion” challenged artists to submit their artistic interpretations of motion in 2-D or 3-D mediums.

Exhibition Juror Marina Press selected 60 works out of 400 submissions from artists residing in Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens who responded to the challenge.

The exhibit is on view in the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery March 28th through April 24th, 2016.

Marina Press is Associate Director of the Bernarducci Meisel Gallery, NYC. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Ms. Press received her BA in

This session we will learn about diamondback terrapin turtles. We will search for these turtles at the beach and once found, weigh and measure them. This is ideal nesting time for these turtles and we may be so lucky as to observe a female turtle laying eggs or searching for a good place to nest. A permit from DEC is required to handle wildlife. As a volunteer, you are covered by our permit only while working directly with us.

ARTIST OF THE WEEK - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) student John Demott was recently selected as “Artist of the Week” by online global art museum and digital curating institution Artsonia.

Connetquot students were inspired by quadriplegic painter and photographer Chuck Close as part of a class project featuring artists with disabilities. Demott painted a portrait of Close for his project and submitted it to Artsonia. After being chosen as Artist of the Week, John was rewarded with a plaque and a $50 gift certificate to purchase art supplies.

Jump Rope for Heart Connetquot School District’s Edward J. Bosti students, staff, parents and teachers recently came together to fight heart disease by participating in the school’s Jump Rope for Heart initiative.

Jump Rope for Heart is an American Heart Association program which encourages healthier living, free of

cardiovascular disease and stroke. The program is designed to promote the value of physical activity in a school-wide cooperative effort to stay healthy and support research to fight heart problems.

With the help of parents and the school’s ParentTeacher Association, students in grades K-5 jumped rope and raised

more than $6,700 by asking family and friends to donate to the American Heart Association for the fight against heart disease.

The Jump Rope for Heart event was coordinated by Edward J. Bosti physical education teachers Ms. Tara West and Mr. Michael Oldis.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART - Connetquot School District’s Edward J. Bosti students Max Leonard, Campbell Cahill and Sophie Mandracchia recently jumped rope to raise money for research to fight heart disease. Edward J. Bosti students raised a total of $6,700 for the fight against heart disease at the school’s Jump Rope for Heart event.

More than 600 ninth grade students at Longwood High School explored future college and career opportunities at the First Annual Career Exploration Showcase held on March 22nd.

Coordinated by Longwood School District’s School-Business Advisory Board, the expo provided first year high school students with an opportunity to explore a range of career areas including law enforcement, health sciences, hospitality, engineering, marketing,

advertising and sales.

Thirty-three businesses, from Long Island, Queens and Manhattan, filled the high school gymnasium to share information about their profession as well as their daily tasks and experiences. As opposed to a job fair where students visit companies, the career fair allows companies to work together to represent career areas for students to explore. The goal of the expo was to raise awareness about each student’s interests, as well as the application and relevance

to their studies.

“I realized that I have to start planning for my future because the next few years will go by quickly,” commented student Meagan Reynoso.

In preparation, students in Academy Career Exploration (ACE) classes researched their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, and learned about a variety of career clusters. As a culminating activity, the students completed a career research project.

MURAL COMPLETED - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) students recently completed a five-foot tall mural of 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. Art students spent the past six months working on the mural as a gift for social studies teacher Rob Burger, featuring his favorite president, Teddy Roosevelt, in the style of his favorite artist, Chuck Close.

In order to complete the project, students worked on the mural before school and during lunch periods, all on their own time.

Outstanding Community

The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation has again recognized the Longwood Central School District for its outstanding commitment to music education with a Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) designation. This marks the 8th time the District has received this recognition.

Of the 476 school districts selected from around the United States, an impressive 131 are from New York State. Of those, 23 are from schools in Nassau County; 23 from Suffolk County.

The BCME designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM

Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs and demonstrate exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of schools’ core curriculum.

To qualify, district officials answered questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs.

Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

“Being named among the best for music education in America enables us to let others know what we’ve known for a long time – that our music education program

is well-supported by our Board of Education and administration, and by our community as a whole,” said Dr. John J. Gallagher, Longwood’s director of fine arts. “Our students are consistently selected for local, regional and state-level music festivals, earning high ratings for their performance abilities and partake in many performance-based opportunities outside of school as well.”

The NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education Award and the implementation of the federal ESSA law bring attention to the importance of keeping music education part of the school’s core education for all students. It also highlights music’s vital role in students’ overall success in school.

Debris Collection Students in Longwood High School’s Environmental Club are doing their part to preserve the beauty and health of the Carmans River.

Through Trout Unlimited’s Annual Carmans River Clean-Up event, held on March 26th, the students collected

more than 300 pounds of debris found in the river and along the river’s edge.

The event, which was sponsored by the Trout in the Classroom (TIC) Program, encourages students to engage in stream habitat study, appreciate water resources and understand

ecosystems.

“Special thanks to the students from Longwood High School and their teacher Ivan Suarez,” said Tom Walsh, Vice President and Interim President of the Art Flick Chapter of Trout Unlimited. “They did a fabulous job and gathered the most trash of the day.”

POP ART - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) students recently presented pop art projects as part of an artistic unit studying the reaction of modern art to traditional art and the work of famous pop artist Roy Lichenstein. OBMS art teacher Danielle DePalma-Mabanta helped students celebrate the occasion by dressing up as a character in the pop art theme to help inspire and motivate the students artistically.

Students Earn Status Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students recently took part in the Town of Islip’s Just Say No Sharpshooter competition.

The competition gave players one minute to make as many baskets as

they could from several positions on the court. The purpose of the event was to promote fitness and agility as well as leading a healthy lifestyle.

Winners from the Edith L. Slocum Elementary School include 4th graders Julia Villani and

Dylan Maresco and 5th graders Reagan Quillo and Justin Hammond. This year’s competition was sponsored by the Town of Islip Housing Authority, Southside Hospital, Northwell Health, and the Islip Elks Club.

Braving the Cold

STORY PIRATES - Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School students recently enjoyed a visit from teachers and parents dressed as story-telling pirates as part of the school’s “Parents as Reading Partners” initiative.

This year’s theme was “Pirates Discovering the Timeless Treasure of Reading.” The “pirates” visited individual classes in the weeks leading up to the assembly to teach students tools they need for reading and writing. During the assembly, the students were surprised to discover Captain Hook was actually their principal, Mr. Pollak.

Five hundred families beat the cold by hopping over to Islandia Village Hall for the 11th Annual Easter Egg Hunt, which took place on March 19th. Children and parents stayed warm by enjoying hot cocoa, coffee, tea, cupcakes and

cookies and dancing to the music performed by “Joe the Singing Bus Driver.”

During the Easter Egg Hunt, children collected some of the 8,000 Easter eggs that were spread throughout the Village Hall grounds.

Some of the eggs contained a ticket in which the lucky children were able to redeem for a special prize. Before the end of the event, the children stopped to get their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny.

Supervisor Ed Romaine reminds Brookhaven residents that registration for the 9th Annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up is now open. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., will be held on Saturday, May 21st at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. It is part of a national effort that draws over 2.5 million volunteers in more than

15,000 communities across America who come together to pick up litter and clean miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and more. Last year, the Great Brookhaven Clean Up drew over 2,600 residents.

Free gloves, trash bags and t-shirts will be provided by the Town for the Great Brookhaven Clean Up volunteers. The supplies will be available for pick up at the Department of Waste Management’s third floor office at Town Hall during regular business

hours (9:00 am to 4:30 pm) from May 9th to May 20th. Evening pick-ups are scheduled for Tuesday, May 17th and Wednesday, May 18th from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Brookhaven Town Hall is located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville.
