On March 5, staff and students from Helen B. Duffield Elementary School welcomed Connetquot High School students to celebrate the life and works of Dr. Seuss as part of the National Education Association’s Read Across America program.

Ninety-five high school students, along with their English teachers Carolyn Paul and Megan Faeger, visited with Duffield students to read from Dr. Seuss’ books. Additionally, Connetquot School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda G. Adams, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dean Mittleman and Board of Education President Milynn Augulis were on hand to enjoy the day’s activities.

“Our students planned and prepared for almost two weeks for this visit,” said Mrs. Paul. “We used a PowerPoint presentation of past visits to Duffield to get them excited for this special day. We then broke the classes into smaller groups who visited the individual classes depending upon the grade level. The students prepared lesson plans, and created writing and art projects developing thoughtful questions about the books they would read to their new friends.

They also incorporated the theme of “7 Healthy Habits” that are used at Duffield all year long.”

One group of high school students created a “Cat in the Hat” photo booth, while another brought along helium balloons to display their friends’ writing for the book “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” for the fifth-graders.

“The experience has proven, year after year, to be extremely rewarding,” said Mrs. Paul. “Students have often written their college essays about their Duffield experiences, and some have even altered their future plans and decided to enter the field of education as a result of this experience.”

Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Principal Lisa Farrell thanked the students, their teachers and guests for visiting and having so much fun with the students of Duffield Elementary.

Although passing away in 1991, Theodor Seuss Geisel’s 114th birthday was celebrated on March 2. His first book was published in 1937, and some of his bestknown classics are “Green Eggs and Ham,” along with “The Cat in the Hat.” The NEA launched the Read Across America program in 1998 to promote the importance of reading to school children.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released the following statement in response to the FDA releasing the agency’s proposed regulations restricting e-cigarette sales.

“New enforcement actions are needed immediately to curb the vaping epidemic that has taken our youth by storm.

While we have taken swift action in Suffolk to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors by increasing penalties and continue to implement new educational programs, the time has come for the FDA to step in and regulate these sweet, fruit flavored e-cigarettes that are targeting our young ones and causing serious damage to their health.”

Your life isn’t making you stressed. Your thoughts are making you stressed. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a friend, family member, business associate or a co-worker tell me they are stressed, I’d probably be retired.

When a lot of tasks are on your plate at once, the human mind will fall in line with the perceived chaos of multiple deadlines or obligations, and will begin to scramble and spin around kind of like a dog frantically chasing its own tail. Have you ever witnessed a dog spin in circles chasing its own tail and going nowhere?

It’s amusing and pity-inducing all at once, as you muse about what a futile effort it is. The dog is moving quickly, expending a great deal of energy and yet going nowhere.

That is exactly what we do when we allow the mind to rapidly

spin in circles with stress. We are expending a great deal of energy and going nowhere.

It is not the ten deadlines or laundry list of errands or looming term paper or sales quota that is making you stressed. It is your thoughts about said events that are making you stressed. Things, events and responsibilites are neither good nor bad; they just are. It is how we frame them within our emotional landscape and nervous system that determines how they make us feel.

Many an afternoon, my son comes home from school declaring that he has too much to get done and it simply isn’t possible. It is true that he typically has some math homework, language arts homework, reading and guitar practice to juggle. When he does become overwhelmed, I let him know that it takes far more energy to “be overwhelmed” than it does to simply complete his tasks. Let that sink in.

The truth is, the human mind has a tendency to underestimate the amount of time we have

and overestimate the amount of things that need to be done. We typically have more time than we perceive, more competency and stamina than we give ourselves credit for and less to actually do than our imagination would have us believe.

When there is a storm of activity whirling around me, I keep it exactly there - around me, but not within me. The wind may blow my leaves around, but my trunk remains still. I know that nothing can be accomplished with chaotic energy, nor can it be accomplished by attempting to tackle everything at once. I make a mental note of what needs to get done, take each task one at a time, and work briskly yet attentively. I mentally pat myself on the back as each task is completed and crossed off my list. When others bring their frenetic energy into my sphere and express their own sense urgency, I let them know that I hear them and I understand the importance it has to them.

I know that as I complete my tasks, one by one, all will get done and all will be well.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years!

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Highlighting African-American History

A collaborative effort provided impressive results as kindergarten students in Jennifer Collins’ class joined their fifth-grade book buddies in Amanda Hallstein’s class at Chippewa Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District for a project that honored prominent AfricanAmerican men and women in history.

As part of the project celebrating Black History Month, student groups researched information on their selected individual and created timelines using chronological order to outline their lives. While organizing the presentations, fifth-grade students focused on text structure to clearly and concisely deliver the information.

Concluding the project, students presented their work to a room of their peers on the influential individual they selected. At what age does it happen?

Sixth-grade students at Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District recently participated in a mythology-themed activity creating button pins, inspired by the Rick Riordan book, “The Lightning Thief.”

With help from the Sachem Public Library, students were taught how to assemble their own button pins before they pressed the buttons together using one of the library’s button presses.

Turkey Meatloaf Your Family Will Love

This week we're sharing a recipe for turkey meatloaf that requires only a handful of ingredients and is sure to please the entire family.

Preparation In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, Lipton onion soup mix, eggs, water, ketchup and bread crumbs.

Use 2 lbs. of chopped turkey meat for a larger gathering of four or more people, or 1 lb. for three or less people.

Bringing Learning to Life An exciting addition to a unit on ecosystems and food chains was incorporated during a recent activity at Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District in Lisa Mazzaglia’s fourth-grade class, with help from technology integration specialist Claudia Camassa.

As part of the students’ study on ecosystems and

the elements they are composed of, students utilized iPads and the Google Expedition Augmented Reality program to see the food chain come alive.

Looking through the iPad, students were able to point the devices at certain markers on the floor that created digitized models of components found in the food chain, such as

producers, consumers, omnivores, herbivores, carnivores and scavengers.

Among the animals that came to life through the digital software were bears, deer and vultures.

As a culminating activity, students organized a food chain from start to finish using each of the components they studied throughout the unit.

Annual Convention Before midwinter recess, Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District transformed into a bustling hub for art and literature as several established authors and illustrators visited to share their specialties with students as part of the annual Sene-Con convention, now in its second year.

Throughout the day, seventh-grade students traveled around the building to a number of classrooms dedicated to specific presentations by talented authors and illustrators from multiple disciplines.

Origami artists Shrikant Iyer and Jacqueline Billig taught students precise folding sequences to form origami art creations, such as a swan, that the students practiced.

Graphic designer and illustrator David O. Miller shared beginner tips for drawing

in three dimensions. He continued his tutorial on the fundamentals of sketching by guiding students through several character drawings and emphasizing the students’ ability to create things with the technology available to them.

An art workshop presented by Imagine That! introduced students to famous artist Jackson Pollack’s work where students learned about the artist before recreating his work using his unique drip paint style. Continuing the focus on art, Marvel artist Billy Tucci spoke to students about his approach to art and the hard work that lead to the position he holds today.

Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around.

Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers.

The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers.

The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers.

It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America.

Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year.

Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service.

IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer

questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits.

Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season.

Addressing The Challenges Of Long-Distance Caregiving Taking care of an elderly loved one can be fulfilling. It isn’t always easy, however. Having to do it from another city or state can make the challenges seem even more complex. Out of the 34 million Americans who provide care to older family members, 15 percent live an hour or more away from their relative. Out of these, nearly 80 percent work full- or part-time.

How do they manage?

It takes organization, determination and a supportive employer.

Long-distance caregivers provide a wide array of services at great cost to themselves. According to a survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, long-distance caregivers spend an average of $392 per month on travel and out-of-pocket expenses.

The expenditure in time is no less than the expenditure in dollars. Out of the more than 1,100 long-distance caregivers contacted by the National Alliance for Caregiving, half of them said they spend nearly 14 hours a month

arranging care services and half said they spend another 16 hours a month checking on their care recipient or monitoring the care being received. Nearly three-quarters of these long-distance caregivers provide help with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) such as transportation, shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing finances and medications-for an average of 22 hours per month.

Considering that so many long-distance caregivers are employed, they often have to make significant adjustments to their work schedules to allow for their caregiving responsibilities.

Twenty-five percent of the surveyed long-distance caregivers had shortened their workday while they were caregiving and 36 percent reported missing full days of work. Twelve percent had taken a leave of absence.

The forces that have created today’s longdistance caregiver realities, including an aging population, families separated by distance,

more women entering the workforce, and global competitiveness among companies, are unlikely to reverse themselves in the near future. Rather, the challenges and workbalance issues are likely to accelerate. Clearly, longdistance caregiving already impacts retention and productivity.

What can an employer do? Certainly, sensitizing line managers to the issue is a reasonable starting point. Adjusting policies to allow job sharing and short-time relief, as well as providing information and help in coordinating eldercare, are definitely worthwhile investments, compared to the cost of attrition and lost productivity. And, since long-distance caregivers have financial burdens as well as time conflicts, programs that offer help with these are beneficial.

For example, voluntary pooling of frequent flyer miles for employees who need to travel on family emergencies is an idea worth considering.
