Rachel Pantorno, resident of Amityville and teacher at Sewanhaka High School, has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2016” by the Harvard Club of Long Island.

“This award honors teachers who transform lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee.

“Devoted teachers like Ms. Pantorno offer Long Island students deep expertise, extraordinary talents, and countless hours of attention. By capturing the minds and imaginations of our children and preparing them for challenges that were unknown even a few decades ago, these teachers shape the future of our country.”

One of a fourteen teachers from across Long Island to receive this award - from across the 150 public school districts

and private schools on Long Island - Ms. Pantorno will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 10th. Following the award ceremony, Benjamin M. Friedman, Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University, will discuss “Prospects for the US Economy and US Economic Policy.”

Ms. Pantorno , who teaches World History and AP World History at Sewanhaka High School, has taught in the district for eleven of her sixteen years. After earning a degree in history from Adelphi University, she earned her Masters in Secondary Education from Molloy College.

Besides having what she describes as “a passion for teaching,” she continues the avocation she began pursuing in high school, volunteering in different

capacities at local animal rescue organizations. In the summers, she travels widely - to Italy, Brazil, Costa Rica, and so on.

Nominated by Shahrukh Khan, a graduate of Sewanhaka in the Harvard College Class of 2017. Ms. Pantorno was described as “Incredibly influential” and “eccentric and demanding,” as well as “effective and caring.”

“She also fostered an interest in history that stays strong today,” added Mr. Khan “with many of my classmates (and I) going on to major in international relations, economics, and political science.”

“Tedious, annoying and hard” were the adjectives the former student used to describe nightly homework, before adding, “but whether they were readings out of a textbook or coloring and labeling countries and empires on a

map, they were like going to the gym: everyday I felt stronger, more prepared.”

Summarizing, Mr. Khan remembers classes as riveting and fun, giving him a “taste of collegelevel studies,” particularly discussions of non-test related topics, such as the origin of Genghis Khan’s real name or the nature of Italian food recipes.” Now, when he thinks of Sewanhaka, he thinks of this “energetic, enthusiastic woman, dancing with the stars of history and teaching her students how to do the same.”

At the ceremony on April 10th, the Harvard Club of Long Island will announce the Distinguished Teachers of 2016 who will also receive scholarships for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge,

Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members.

This year’s award winners teach art, biology, chemistry, earth science, English, marine science, math, music and social studies.

The winners teach in the Half Hollow Hills, Herricks, Hicksville, Manhasset, Massapequa, Oceanside, Sayville, Sewanhaka, Syosset and Valley Stream districts, as well as St. Anthony’s High School, The Stony Brook School and the Waldorf School.

Students: Put Away Your Smart Phone!

Although quality use of the smart phone is more important than using it for fun.

“What the students are reading on their phones isn’t all unimportant content,” said Steven Rothberg, president of College Recruiter, a job placement site. “With well over 90 percent using smart phones and most reading e-mails on their smart phones, students are often using their phones to search for an internship or entry-level job. That type of reading will require more focus on their phones and less on their surroundings than if they were looking at videos of cute kittens.”

We decided to focus on the work of Dr. Ofir Turel, professor of information systems and decision sciences at Cal State Fullerton, for this issue.

“Smart phones are like refrigerators full of surprising foods; it is very tempting for many users to get sucked into checking and updating content,” Dr. Turel told us.

“Taken together, the strong psychological rewards people receive from using applications on their cell phones, the inconvenience they feel when they do not use them, and the time it takes to do all this are reasonable possible explanations for the need to spend break time, while walking through university corridors, on the cell phone.”

You have to ask yourself, is what you’re doing on social media really all that important?

“The concept of a “friend” has changed, from having 10-30 friends when I grew up to having hundreds or thousands of “friends” on Facebook, some of whom you have never met,” Turel said. “Managing so many so-called friends, following their daily, and often mundane, routines and activities, is time consuming.

“Overall, the balance between the positive and negative effects of cell phone really depends on the self-control of

users and their understanding that they need to put limits on and control their use patterns. Ultimately, allowing the use of such sites in class assumes a certain level of maturity – students need to refrain from abusing such systems, and use these “re-charging” rights wisely.”

So what can be done about this problem, if anything?

“First, we need to increase awareness among students regarding potential problems associated with excessive and sometimes addictive use of some technologies,” Turel said.

Some universities already include a module on Internet/ video gaming risks for incoming freshmen students, he noted, so adding a seminar on appropriate smart phone use would be easy.

“Many causes of dropping out have to do with spending too much time on non-productive Internet activities such as playing video games,” he said. “Teachers can explain the risks to students and discuss their cell phone and social media use policies in class.”

Turel added, “Cell phones, Facebook and other technologies are like food – we need them and we do not want to avoid them. When consumed at healthy levels, for the right purpose and properly (for example, around the table and not while driving) they are very useful. However, over- and improper consumption can lead to adverse consequences. We need to be better aware of these risks and teach ourselves to develop the right balance of both food consumption and technology use.”

Brooks concluded, “The addiction that students have to their mobile devices has fundamentally changed the nature of interpersonal relationships and communication. The technology has allowed us to communicate and connect easier and more rapidly, but has caused even more distance between people.”

In just the past couple of years, especially, it seems, at commuter colleges, the majority of students in campus corridors seem to be staring down at their smart phones.

“In the classroom, cell phones are a major distraction,” said Stoney Brooks, a professor of Computer Information Systems at Middle Tennessee State University. “Many students do not think that multitasking – checking Facebook, texting, watching a harmless YouTube video, etc. – is harmful to their learning. This is not true. Humans cannot multitask – we rapidly task-switch. And whenever we switch tasks, our brains have to refocus our processing to the new task, and we forget some of the information that we had for the first task. There are studies that show that, for example, social media use in the classroom is associated with increased stress and lower classroom performance.”

Obviously, this can be a safety concern, too, with no one actually looking up and taking in the action happening around them. But also it can be a quality-of-life concern, as students may not feel they can escape their day-today worries while on campus, instead managing their private lives via the device. What suffers could be the socalled “college experience,” the experts warn us. You may be missing out on enjoying your time on a real, physical campus while you tend to a virtual world.

“Cell phones have a great potential for help and for harm.

Sadly, the harmful effects are more prevalent than the helpful ones for today’s students, and they are cheating themselves out of the true college experience,” Brooks added.

One professor told us an anecdote of another professor who gives his students allotted breaks for their cell phone use. This would be analogous to the cigarette breaks given in the 1970s and prior. The students have trouble keeping focus if they can’t get a fix.

In a competitive job market and in the quest for college admissions it is important for individuals to distinguish themselves as outstanding and valuable candidates. For many years, Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes has been teaching young people the skills needed to succeed in the quest for college acceptance and marketplace viability. During a visit to Levittown’s Division Avenue High School on March 1st, Hudes taught business students the “recipe for success.”

Hudes, who is also a local business owner and a past president of Nassau County’s largest business organization, was guest teacher for a day as he taught students about a variety of job interview and career skills, including: interviewing

techniques, proper etiquette, appropriate attire, eye contact and helpful tips. He applied an energetic interactive approach that included live demonstrations and discussions.

“For students seeking advancements in schooling and in their career paths, applying practical skills and interviewing methods are keys to success,” Hudes said. “In today’s competitive job market, you have to go the extra mile to stand above the rest.”

Teachers at Division High School have said that the lessons taught

by Councilman Hudes have made an impact on students over the years.

As a past president of the Bellmore Chamber of Commerce, and the county’s largest business organization – the Nassau

Council of Chambers of Commerce – Hudes worked closely with small business owners to guide them to long-term success.

Additionally, Hudes spearheaded the revitalization of downtown business districts that served as models for others across Long Island.

“I thank the teachers, administrators and students of Division High School for inviting me in and embracing this important topic,” Hudes said. “Being prepared for job and college interviews is crucial for these students as they embark on their career and educational goals after high school.

…An excerpt from the inscription my Grandpa, my “Pal,” wrote in the pages of my senior high school yearbook, after some gentle, goodnatured prodding that, after all, he couldn’t always just leave these things to Grandma.

I’m not sure exactly when “Pal” became our thing, but indeed it was, for as far back as I can remember. It was the way we addressed each other – in person, in cards exchanged, in life – a bond that grew ever closer with each passing year.

So many memories, from childhood sleepovers at Grandma and Grandpa’s house, to endless summer (and autumn) nights spent “cuddling” on the couch watching the Yankees, plenty of snacks at hand. I would often call ahead to see if there were any good “tickets” available, and my Grandpa would chuckle on the other end of the phone, assuring me that he had saved two front row seats just for us.

There were the countless weekends spent following my Grandpa around the house, out to his shed in the backyard, down to the basement, his “workshop” … wanting to know what he was working on as he tinkered and trimmed, painted and planted – always doing something, but never too busy for his Pal. I can still recall the dozens of bocce ball “tournaments” in his backyard “court,” a perfectly manicured stretch of lawn that only he knew the nuances of, leading to many victories for Grandpa – me, not so much. And cards… I still have a set of playing cards my Pal gave to me, the same ones he had taught me to play “War” and “Rummy” with.

(He let me win those matches occasionally.)

So many hot summer afternoons running through the sprinklers as a child, “swimming” in my inflatable

Smurfs pool, and of course swinging on the old swing set in the backyard. Once the set came down – much to my dismay – my Grandpa managed to rig a single swing from a sturdy tree branch so that his “big kid” of a grandchild could still enjoy.

I can clearly picture my Pal sitting on the patio under the awning watching me fly through the air, laughing silently, his shoulders shaking up and down.

There were the days when I would accompany my Pal on his frequent walks around the neighborhood, a route that often took us through the local cemetery around the corner from his house. Occasionally, I would bring my bicycle along and “practice” on the smooth paved paths, eventually begging him to take me to the nearby elementary school where I could speed through the empty parking lot at my leisure while he kept a careful eye on me.

As I grew older, my Grandpa would often pick me up from work on the weekends for lunch, where he would make his “famous” pepper and potato and egg pie for me. As we sat down to eat, he would let me sip some of the foam from the top of his beer. Often, we would finish up with a few pretzels or cookies, as you could never leave without having dessert.

At Christmas time, one of our most cherished family traditions, we would celebrate Christmas Eve at Grandma and Grandpa’s. Grandma would take care of the menu, and Grandpa would handle all the gift-wrapping, a skill he had perfected from his many years of working at the A&S department store. And, just when the night was nearly over, my Pal would disappear down the basement, only to emerge with “one more gift,” usually the most special one of all.

At Father’s Day, it became tradition for me to take my father and grandfather out to breakfast, using the funds that my Pal had given me throughout the year when he would come over to collect my recyclables and cash in the bottle deposits. It didn’t matter if there were two

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan bottles; he always gave me at least a dollar in return. If it was more, five dollars. When I protested that it was too much, he would just smile, saying he was “going to the store anyway” to check out the latest sales and stock up the basement “pantry.”

As I grew older, I came to appreciate more and more what a special man this was, how lucky I was to have him in my life. I cherished every message he would leave on our home answering machine, singing “Happy Birthday” to me; and, once my grandmother passed away several years ago, the beautiful cards he would pick out to mark every occasion.

Whether we were exchanging funny faces and making cross-eyes at each other across the kitchen table, or I was begging him to let me treat him to dinner at our local diner (not knowing he had already sent his secret signal to the waitress and managed to whisk away the bill before anyone else had a chance to see it), we always had a deep connection.

Just last week, my special Pal passed away, leaving a giant hole in my heart. His life was a shining example of what a man should be, to my grandmother, to his children and grandchildren, to everyone. His at-times shy, always humble, demeanor concealed a sly sense of humor that only those closest to him were privileged to see. The laughter and love he brought to all our lives was, and remains, my fondest memory of him.

Each time I hear the song “In the Mood,” I will continue to picture my grandparents flying across the dance floor, never missing a step, as they looked adoringly at one another. I can only hope they are dancing together at this very moment.

And so, Pal… May God always watch over you (me too).

Great American Cleanup Keep Islip Clean kicks off a series of community enhancement projects on April 1st marking the start of the 2016 Great American Cleanup, a nationwide program from Keep America Beautiful.

This year’s “Clean Your Block Party” theme encourages people to volunteer for litter cleanups at roadsides, parks, trails, and waterways and then take those actions home to their own neighborhoods in order to create lasting change. Related improvement activities such as beautification and recycling are also important and welcome.

Every year, thousands of KIC volunteers join over 4 million people across the country in Great American Cleanup activities. The result is clean, green and beautiful communities that are environmentally healthy, socially connected and economically sound.

Volunteers can join a large community event or create their own. KIC supports all participants with guidance and supplies, including trash bags, volunteer vests and gloves to make each project a success. Educational activities are also available for grade school children.

Teens for Jeans

Town of Islip officials and members of the Islip Youth Bureau and Youth Enrichment Services were recently joined by members of the Hope for Youth organization at a ceremony held at the Suffolk County Youth Runaway Shelter in Babylon.

The short ceremony celebrated the donation of roughly 1,500 pairs of jeans to the shelter, part of the national Teens for Jeans effort. The Suffolk County Youth Runaway Shelter provides a refuge for homeless and runaway youth, ranging in age from 12 to 17. An additional 500 jeans will be donated to other worthy recipients in our area.

“Every year we are able to grow this worthy cause

thanks to the generosity of our community and the selflessness of our wonderful volunteers,” said Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik. “This year we are also able to make a direct impact against the problem of youth homelessness in Suffolk County by aiding the Youth Runaway Shelter.”

This donation drive was coordinated by the Youth Bureau with the help of their contract agency: Youth Enrichment Services. This drive is conducted by students within local school districts to encourage community awareness and engagement. The following schools participated in the 2016 drive: Islip High School, Sayville High

School and Middle School, Bayport-Blue Point Middle School, Central Islip High School and St. Mary School. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi’s office also participated, and a large donation came from Savers in Holbrook.

“We are incredibly proud of our Town of Islip Youth, who really stepped up in an effort to give a sense of normalcy to peers within the community who may be struggling,” said Hollyann Riker, of the Islip Youth Board.

Summer Page Program After a successful inaugural year, the Suffolk County Legislature will again sponsor a Summer Page Program for graduating high school seniors and college students, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory announced today.

“We are so excited to once again welcome students to participate in our Summer Page Program,” Presiding Officer Gregory said.

“The program offers students a unique, insider perspective on how government works – a perspective they cannot get in a classroom – and helps them develop essential professional skills. We are grateful for the enthusiasm, spirit, and thirst for knowledge these students bring to the office each day and can’t wait to welcome the next class of Pages to the Legislature.”

The 11-week program, which is slated to begin on Saturday, May 21st, will provide Pages with an opportunity to work directly with the legislator with whom they have been paired. Throughout the week, Pages will work out of the district offices, where they will conduct legislative research, contribute material to the legislators’ social media presence, and engage in constituent service.

Each Friday, Pages will report to the Legislature’s William H. Rogers Building for workshops and lectures on leadership and government. The

students will even debate mock legislation. The program will conclude on Aug. 5 with a graduation ceremony hosted by Presiding Officer Gregory.

“I started my career in public service as an intern for the New York State Assembly,” Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco said. “Working for local government showed me that we can dedicate an entire career to helping those in our community by tackling challenging problems. I encourage young people to join our Page program to explore this exciting work we do every day.”

“Working as a Page for the Suffolk County Legislature will expose students to all of the diverse components that comprise a local government,” said Minority Caucus Leader and 14th District Legislator Kevin McCaffrey. “Pages working in the program will have the ability to hone their skills in writing, public relations, research, and general office operations – all vital in a competitive job market. This is a wonderful opportunity for all involved, and I very much look forward to working with the Pages this summer.”

“These young professionals gained invaluable experience at the Legislature, and I know they will all be successful in whatever they choose

The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce the 2016 Long Island Arts Grants Recipients.

On Tuesday evening March 8th, the Huntington Arts Council held the 16th Annual Grants for the Arts Reception at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association.

In addition to announcing the 64 grant awards, the attendees experienced the work of three grant recipients first hand; Patchogue Arts Council who provided artists work in the form of sculpture and paintings, Rohini Ramanathan a muscian, performed her original works and Dafna Soltes-Stein a storyteller, performed a scene from her arts in education project.

Members of the Huntington Arts Council and grant recipients from across Nassau and Suffolk counties were in attendance. Grants totaling over $200,000 were awarded in the categories of Creative Individuals, Creative Curriculum and

Creative Communities.

“Administering the DEC program is such a critical aspect of the work we do here at the Huntington Arts Council. It truly allows artists of all types to “bring art to life”. This year there were 81 grant applications submitted and the caliber of work was extraordinary.

In the next several months, we will highlight some grant recipients from each category and follow them throughout the upcoming year. Working with the artists we will help to “tell” their story, enabling the community to see how a project develops from start to finish.” said Marc Courtade, Executive Director Huntington Arts Council.

NYSCA Decentralization grants are offered by New York State Council on the Arts.

In Suffolk and Nassau counties, Long Island Decentralization is administered by the Huntington Arts Council.

Funding decisions are made by a series of panels comprised of local artists, community leaders, and individuals from throughout the region. All award recommendations are required to be voted on by the Board of Directors of the Huntington Arts Council, Inc.

Arts Council Grant Recipients In 1977, the New York State Council of the Arts (NYSCA) developed the Decentralization program in response to a state legislative mandate that encouraged the administration and awarding of grant money at a local level. Through this program, nonprofit organizations and individual artists may apply annually for grants to help strengthen the arts and cultural programs in their communities. It is the intention of New York State Council on the Arts that these funds, regranted through Decentralization, provide developmental support to those organizations exhibiting quality programming, community support, and professionalism.

The Art League of Long Island invites artists from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens to submit entries to the upcoming juried competition “Figuratively Speaking” showing in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery June 4th through June 26th, 2016. Deadline to submit application is April 28th, 2016.

In this juried exhibition, The Art League asks the artist to submit two- or three-dimensional works addressing the figure.

These works may be realistic or abstract. The figure may be human or otherwise. All mediums will be considered, with the exception of photography or video.

Ms. Schnabl is Principal/ Director of Stux + Haller Gallery in NYC. Andrea Schnabl was born near München, Germany and received her formal art education at the Kunst Institut, Landshut, Germany. Her early years in the United States, starting in 1987, were spent concentrating on monumental public sculpture. She joined Stux Gallery in 2002 as gallery director. Being formally trained as a sculptor, she naturally has a deep understanding of the intellectual and physical process of art making, while possessing a discerning eye and empathy for artists,

thus connecting her closely with the gallery artists and their work. In 2008 she became a full partner in the gallery, sharing with the gallery’s founder, Stefan Stux, all responsibilities pertaining to artist representation, critical selection of artists and artworks, client relationships, sales, overall gallery management and staffing, while playing a pivotal role in the mapping of the vision and long-term goals for the gallery’s future.

On March 9th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright visited the Old Field Club and Farm in East Setauket to recognize with a proclamation their listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Old Field Farm is an historic Long Island show grounds with a long equestrian tradition. Long Island philanthropist Ward Melville built the farm in 1931. He commissioned architect Richard Haviland Smythe (18991965) to create a unique equestrian facility located on a distinctive waterfront setting on Long Island’s North Shore. The stable

complex is composed of a main barn and courtyard, numerous free standing stables and a large, old fashioned wooden grandstand, all designed in the Colonial Revival style.

It is located on 13 scenic acres in the historic Three Village area adjoining 88 acres of protected wetlands overlooking Long Island Sound on the north and the West Meadow Creek wetlands to the south, an area which has been designated “outstanding natural coastal area” (ONCA) by New York State.

The Old Field Club was built by the Melville family in 1929 to be used as a swim club. It later became

a private tennis and beach club and today it is a popular catering facility.

Ward Melville founded the club as an additional amenity for new owners within the neighborhood and previous residents alike.

The clubhouse was built on eight acres adjacent to the Long Island Sound and included a club house, tennis courts, private sandy cabana beach, a newly built tidal bathing pool and deep waterways for boating and mooring.

Like the farm, the architect for the clubhouse and beach cabanas was Richard Haviland Smythe who was known for his Colonial Revival designs.

From blue displays throughout Main Street in Riverhead to lectures in the community, Northwell Health is making people aware of their colorectal health and colon cancer.

The American Cancer Society anticipates that there will be almost 100,000 new cases of colon cancer this year. Men have about one in 21 chance of getting colon cancer in their lifetime and women have approximately one in 23 odds of getting the disease, the ACS said.

Throughout the month of March, Northwell Health is promoting colon cancer awareness through: • Colon cancer lectures:

This process necessarily involves formulating a project idea, determining the required human and material resources, and demonstrating unwavering leadership throughout the process.

For his project, Salvatore decided to improve the living conditions for the residents at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Islip. Specifically, through the planting of fifteen evergreen trees along the institution’s fence line, residents will now have some much appreciated shade and privacy when enjoying the outdoors. During the ceremony, it was also explained that the project would at least partially benefit the drainage of water on the premises.

“I never cease to be amazed by the creativity associated with Eagle Scout projects, and Salvatore’s is certainly no exception,” said McCaffrey.

“Projects like Salvatore’s benefit the community in a very special way, but they also serve as a model for community service, for Scouts and non-Scouts alike. I applaud Salvatore’s efforts and look forward to his future contributions to our community and society at large.”

Eagle Honoree

On Sunday, March 6th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Troop 2014’s Salvatore Cataldo, who hails from West Babylon.

The ceremony took place

at American Legion Post 1634, and was attended by Salvatore’s proud parents, friends, elected officials or their representatives, and Scouts of all ages.

This particular Court of Honor was a very special

one, as Salvatore is Troop 2014’s very first Eagle Scout. As a trailblazing Scout, Salvatore has become a source of inspiration to his peers, as evidenced by the fact that Troop 2014 expects to

induct an additional Eagle Scout in the very near future.

Over the course of Salvatore’s Scouting career, he earned no less 65 merit badges covering a very wide variety of subject matter, in addition to earning a slew of awards.

All of these achievements marked an important milestone in Salvatore’s career, and also equipped him with many unique skillsets which would be applied during his service project.

An Eagle Scout’s service project is the crowning achievement of a candidate’s journey to Scouting’s highest rank. The project must be one that benefits the community, in addition to being planned and managed by the candidate.

In a pressure cooker competition, three hospital chefs with more than 50 years of combined culinary experience, impressed judges at Northwell Health’s Fifth Annual Ultimate Healthy Cooking Challenge to win the top prize for their original India- inspired, three-course menu. Culinary masters from 15 hospitals around the New York metropolitan area competed in the contest held at Glen Cove Hospital, proving they can serve up scrumptious, restaurant-quality meals, but without the added high fat, calories or sodium.

The winning chef team – Janisa Freysinet, North Shore University Hospital; Patricia Sobel, Northern Westchester Hospital; and Russell Ficke, Syosset Hospital; had never professionally cooked together. Their three delicious and eye-pleasing dishes took the top honor for this menu: “Gobi Dumplings,” “Cauliflower Steak Chana Masala,”

and “Pineapple, Peaches and Meringues.”

Coinciding with National Nutrition Month in March, five culinary teams of three chefs from different hospitals faced off at Glen Cove’s Pratt Auditorium, which was transformed into a giant kitchen equipped with electric burners, a pantry and a plentiful farmers’ market for the cooking contest. Each team had 60 minutes to create tasty, attractive and nutritious meals for the three judges to score, and one for the presentation table.

Hospital culinary teams were paired with registered dieticians and interns from North Health hospitals to ensure that the three-course meal must be equal or less than 700 calories, 15 grams of fat and 750 milligrams of sodium. Teams were given a “surprise protein” – such as halibut, shrimp, chicken and filet mignon, or had the option of selecting a vegetarian protein – around which to build their original three course meal.

“The Ultimate Chef Challenge highlights how our chefs are able to inspire delicious and nutritious meals, not only for our patients but for ourselves,” said Robert E. Graham, MD, director of integrative health & wellness at Northwell Health, and one of the competition’s judges.

“We are investing in a culture of health and wellness in order to maintain a healthy work place and workforce and it starts with food,” he said, adding “improving our

The event also welcomed back competition judge Todd Daigneanult, an executive chef at Overlook Medical Center in NJ. In addition to the winning chef team, judges recognized first place winners in each course and the vegetarian category: • First course: Frank Imbrosciano, Huntington Hospital; “Vegetarian Asian Potsticker” • Second course: Patrick Beirne, Southside Hospital; “Pan Seared Curried Tuna” • Third course: Russell Ficke, Syosset Hospital; “Pineapple, Peaches and Meringues” • Vegetarian: Patricia Sobel, Northern Westchester Hospital; “Cauliflower Steak Chana Masala” “Health system chefs and staff create over eight million meals annually for patients, staff and visitors, which is quite a feat,” said Michael Kiley, director of nutrition and food services at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, who organized the cook off and served as the event’s emcee. In this competition, chefs can focus their creative talents on an original three-course meal, demonstrating that they can prepare appealing food that tastes delicious and is healthy.”

Selected to Serve

Jaclyn Urzia, a 16 yearold Massapequa resident, was selected to represent her school, St. Dominic’s High School, and the state of New York, in Boston this year. Every year, an academically outstanding student who has demonstrated strong humanitarian efforts, is

selected to attend The Congress of Future Medical Leaders, for their annual event in June.

The Congress of Future Medical Leaders was created by the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to help gather many of the country’s

finest high school students who aspire to careers in medicine and single them out for special recognition and ongoing mentorship.

All attendees are selected by their teachers or the academy based on proven academic excellence and a demonstrated desire to enter the medical profession. All students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA to be nominated.

The Congress brings these young Delegates face-to-face with winners of the Nobel Prize, award winning young inventors and scientists, deans from the top medical schools, Ivy League academic leaders, interesting patient cases, and introduces them to different aspects of the Medical field.

At the March 10th Town Board Meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle and the Town Board honored members of the St. Baldrick’s Day Committee for raising $20,000 to support lifesaving childhood cancer research.

Over the last three years, the Centereach Civic and community has raised close to $100,000 for St. Baldrick’s. The annual

The Councilman presented Certificates of Appreciation to the members in attendance.

What began as a challenge between friends in 2000, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation head shaving event has grown into the world’s largest volunteerdriven and donor-centered fundraising program for

childhood cancer research.

Since 2000, the foundation has raised more than $186 million.

Committee members are: Jennifer Dickson, Cathy Pedro, Fran Bielmeier, Maria Weisner, Jennifer Roy, William Gilmartin, Robert Wilson, Michael Norman, and Douglas Dickson - many whom are involved with the Centereach Civic.

Chamber Address

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone spoke at a meeting of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce’s government committee March 11th, updating the committee on various issues involving the Town.

Among the topics Supervisor Petrone covered were measures

aimed at improving the parking situation in Huntington Village, including the pending request for proposals for a parking structure; Huntington Station revitalization projects for which groundbreakings could be held later this year; the status of a consultant’s report with

recommendations on a plan for continuing Melville’s development; and housing developments, including the nearly completed Highland Green limited equity cooperative in Melville and proposed over-55 communities in Elwood and Ft. Salonga.

Prescribed Burn Set The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, will conduct a controlled, prescribed burn between March 28th and April 3th, at the Sayville Unit of Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in West Sayville. Actual dates will depend on weather conditions, favorable winds for smoke to rise and disperse, and the availability of trained wildland firefighters. The proposed burn unit is 41 acres and consists of warm season grasses and some shrubs and woody vegetation. The use of prescribed fire is a vital part of the Unit’s habitat management program.

The Sayville Unit is a unique maritime grassland community, which supports the largest population of the federally endangered sandplain

gerardia (Agalinis acuta) in the State of New York. The Unit also provides habitat for rare wildflowers, as well as butterflies and moths. The objectives of the prescribed burn are to: enhance habitat for sandplain gerardia; increase native warm season grasses and forbs; and reduce woody vegetation and non-native, invasive plants. Anticipated results include healthier native plant growth and better habitat for migratory birds, pollinators and other wildlife. A prescribed burn will also reduce the risks of future catastrophic wildfires by removing standing dead vegetation.

Service staff have safely conducted prescribed burns in previous years to enhance and restore wildlife habitat, and control woody vegetation and invasive plants. The

Sayville burn will take place during the late winter/ early spring season when the ground vegetation is dormant and dry enough to burn, but wet enough to prevent an extreme fire. Fire breaks around the burn unit will prevent the fire from spreading on and off Service property.

Emergency personnel, including the local police and fire departments, will be notified prior to the prescribed burn. Service staff estimate that the burn will be completed within 7 days or less.
