‘Winter Olympics’ Competition for Staff & Residents to Boost Morale The COVID-19 pandemic has postponed, altered and canceled many sporting events worldwide, so staff members at some Long Island and Westchester nursing homes staged their own by organizing a Winter Olympics competition.

The staff at several “sister” nursing and rehabilitation facilities competed in events including an opening ceremony that passed the Olympic torch, a nursing ace bandage wrap-off, a 100-ft egg and spoon race, therapy wheelchair races featuring the fastest therapy staff members, and a “Purell relay race, a timed competition involving 10 staff members passing and using hand sanitizer down a line.

Each day of the week encouraged staff and residents to compete in a talent show and trivia contest, wear their best sweat suits to work, and to decorate residents’ doors.

Facilities earned points for each event and task, and judges were brought in to

evaluate food preparation and baking skills as well as housekeeping talent.

“These friendly competitions highlighted both our staff and residents and greatly increased morale!” said Megan Elba, assistant administrator at the North Westchester Restorative Therapy and Nursing Center “All the participating facilities went above and beyond, and our staff and residents loved it!

We also shared on social media so that families, friends and loved ones could also enjoy watching the competitions and cheer their athletes on.”

“The Olympics was a great way to bring together residents and staff alike,” said Stacey Altman, administrator for Excel at Woodbury Nursing and Rehabilitation. “It allowed us to have some fun and help rebuild morale within the building. The halls were alive with laughter and friendly competition.

It was amazing to see all the hidden talents come out and be celebrated.”

The Paragon Winter Olympics was a great deal of fun for everyone involved,” said Joe Aplustille, administrator. “The week gave us an opportunity to laugh again and de-stress a bit. It was exactly what the doctor ordered. Of course, the cherry on top was winning the Gold!”

“Words cannot express how proud and thrilled I am for these young ladies to have this moment,” said Coach James Castiglione.

“With all the adversity they have faced this past year, they collectively were determined not to be denied this title and continued to represent themselves, family, and our Longwood Community to the best of their abilities.”

The Lady Lions went

into the championship game as undefeated League One Champions for the third consecutive year and Suffolk County AA Finalists in 20.

“Congratulations to the team and coaches on a well-deserved success,” said Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Alicia Smith.

“Their victory is about much more than just the game itself. There is an additional meaning for this group. Their experience this season has become more symbolic than just the wins alone.”

Seniors Angelene Bailey and Rachel Mandaro will

continue their athletic careers after graduation attending SUNY New Paltz and Rochester Institute of Technology, respectively.

“Despite the unprecedented challenges, the girls’ basketball team and coaches have had an incredible season, and we are exceptionally proud of the remarkable accomplishments of this group,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Lonergan.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true.

Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events.

Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a fixed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile!

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable

conditions.

Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that!

You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions.

Students Showcase Power Of Kindness Through Creativity Kindness, creativity and an exploration of technology came together for an engaging activity at Tamarac Elementary School, as third grade students in Kathleen Devine’s class used Ozobots

in celebration of P.S. I Love You Day. As part of the activity facilitated by technology integration specialist Claudia Camassa and art teacher Alexis Curcio, students used photographs

of their own hands making the peace sign in American Sign Language. They then color coded a path around the photos to command movements from the Ozobots. Using different colors, students selected

movements for the Ozobots to complete along the path, such as slow, fast, turbo, zigzag, spin and back walk.

Culminating the activity, students joined their peace

sign photos around a large heart drawing which connected all of the peace signs, forming a singular path for the Ozobots to travel together. The collective creation of peace

which formed the track for the Ozobots further symbolized the theme for P.S. I Love You Day this year, which is “Together We Rise.”

Choir ‘Seizes The Day’ Connetquot High School’s Long Island Voices Choir recently danced to their own recording of the song “Seize the Day” from the musical “Newsies” in a unique in-class rehearsal.

Each member created a voice recording from home and submitted it through

Google Classroom. Choir director James Nagle then combined and engineered the tracks to create a virtual choir performance.

Eleventh grader Madeleine DiGaetano developed dynamic choreography for the number and led dance rehearsals for all members.

While the group looks forward to the day when they can perform live on stage in front of an audience, they continue to make music an interesting, meaningful and enjoyable part of their education at Connetquot.
