Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

His instinct to turn the camera away from the main attraction and onto the gathering crowds, resulted in some of the most visceral images of the day. Math-A-Thon For A Better Tomorrow

Middle Country Central School District’s Jericho Elementary School students recently participated in a MathA-Thon competition sponsored by St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital to help raise money and increase awareness of the groundbreaking work done at the Memphisbased research hospital. The school’s first-grade through fifth-grade students completed gradeappropriate math tasks as the foundation of the fundraising effort.

“It’s truly amazing to see what we can do as a community,” said

Elena Baldwin, Principal of Jericho Elementary School. “Special thanks to Carolyn Raynoha who organizes and spearheads Math-A-Thon each year. Your dedication to your students and giving back to the community is admirable!”

This was the eighth year that the school has worked with St. Jude’s. This year, the students’ efforts resulted in $6,501 being raised for the hospital. Over the course of eight years, Jericho Elementary School students have raised $76,615.

“The students truly enjoy and look forward to the Math-A-Thon,”

said Carolyn Raynoha, Jericho Elementary School’s fourth-grade teacher. “This program aligns with our Character Education efforts, and more specifically with this month’s theme word which is caring.”

The St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital is worldrenowned for its work in treating and fighting childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Treatments developed at St. Jude’s have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened over 50 years ago.

FCA Offers Free Help With Medicare Enrollment Recent Changes

Make Coverage Even More Affordable

Enrolling in Medicare can be confusing. Family and Children’s Association’s (FCA) Free Nassau County Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) can help with enrollment guidance by phone.

The Open Enrollment season for people who are currently enrolled in Medicare ended December 7, 2022, but there is another potential opportunity to switch Medicare health plans for those currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO).

The additional Open Enrollment season runs from January 1 through March 31, with any changes effective the first day of the month following enrollment. There is also the opportunity to drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to traditional Medicare during this time, although you would also need to sign up for a Medicare drug plan. If you find that the plan in which you are currently enrolled does not work for you, this

added flexibility can help you find a new plan that better suits your needs.

Please note, that if you were not currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you cannot sign up for one at this time. The current enrollment period only allows people to switch or drop a plan.

Income Limit Increase Helps More People

The Medicare Savings Program has dramatically increased the income limits for eligibility. This program can help pay your Medicare Part B premium and can dramatically lower your drug costs. If you were previously found to be ineligible for this program, you should call Family and Children’s Association’s (FCA) Nassau County Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) office to see if you are now eligible.

Medicare coverage can be confusing for the uninitiated, as there are various options. Choosing the right plan for you requires

careful consideration. If you need help understanding or choosing a plan, FCA can help guide you through the process with free help by calling 516-485-3754.

There are four basic parts of Medicare:

Hospital Insurance (Part A) covers you as an inpatient in a hospital or skilled nursing or rehabilitation facility, or for skilled home care after a hospitalization. Medicare Part A also can cover hospice care if you have a terminal illness. For most people Medicare Part A is premium free.

Medicare Medical Insurance (Part B) covers physician and other outpatient services. These services include doctor visits, hospital outpatient services, lab tests; physical, speech or occupational therapy; and durable medical equipment for use in the home. The standard Part B premium amount in 2022 is $164.90. Most people pay the standard Part B premium amount. If your modified adjusted gross income as reported on your

IRS tax return from 2 years ago is above a certain amount, you’ll pay the standard premium amount and an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). IRMAA is an extra charge added to your premium.

Medicare Part C You may opt for Medicare Advantage plans instead of Part B. Medicare are managed care plans including Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs). These plans generally have a network of providers. In an HMO you must use providers in that network. If you join a PPO, you can go out of the network, but you will have a higher copayment for out of network services. Medicare Advantage plans generally cover prescription drugs, otherwise covered by Medicare Part D, and frequently cover nonMedicare services such as vision, dental and hearing services.

Medicare Part D is prescription coverage. There are 19 drug plans in New York State. These plans vary

in premium cost and formularies. Medigap

There are Medicare supplement plans known as Medigap. These are standardized plans that can fill most of the Medicare gaps such as deductibles and co-insurance. For more information about these changes to Medicare and for any other information pertaining to your health benefits, you can call our office at 516-485-3754 and a trained counselor will assist you.

Local Small Business Owner Opens A Refuge For Veterans

Pictured

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, a local small business serves vulnerable communities, such as seniors and homeless individuals across Long Island. Owner Eileen Scanlon has a heart for helping others and is actively involved in doing so. When she became aware of the fast growing rate of displaced/homeless veterans, she decided to embark on an effort to create an “intentional home share” for these individuals.

“In New York, rents and home prices are skyrocketing, which is forcing many to leave the state,” said Scanlon. “Even for those who stay here, owning a home is becoming quite unattainable. I wanted to embark on a mission that allowed me to offer a home for veterans in need, where they can live under one roof. They would share expenses and all upkeep the residence, allowing for camaraderie to blossom, but we would keep prices low.”

With a head full of dreams and a heart full of passion, Eileen purchased Ruby’s Whisper, an old 1700’s Tavern turned home in Hyde Park, NY, which she is now converting to a home share

for four to five low income veterans. The property is just a stones throw away from Marist College and the Vanderbilt/Roosevelt Estates, with public transportation nearby.

“The home will offer comfort, solace, space and a feeling of yesteryear,” said Eileen. “There are five lovely sized bedrooms, a spacious living room and cozy kitchen. The home will be furnished with the help of selfless individuals/ organizations that kindly donated items. The backyard offers veterans the ability to grow their own food and the veterans that stay with us can also utilize two large sheds for storage and there are two separate driveways in which will accommodate four vehicles. A family style home share like this for vets might mean the difference between paying rent and being able to pay their monthly food bill; a home share allows them to keep their monthly expenses much lower compared to if they were renting a place on their own.”

The home is undergoing renovations that will hopefully be finalized by the end of this summer.

“I have titled this whole project Heye’s Haven for Heroes, and I’m looking to have it fully incorporated as a 501C3 Non-Profit Organization as soon as possible. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity at this stage in my life, where I can pay forward in a way that I feel would make my father and grandfather, both veterans, rather proud.”

A GoFundMe Page has been created, where donations are being accepted to help assist with the price of renovations. If you are interested in making a donation, please scan the QR below or visit www.heyeshaven.com/ about-us and click VISIT OUR GOFUNDME PAGE. “I’m so thankful for any donations, they truly help make a difference.”

If you are a veteran in need that is interested in learning more, such as becoming a resident at this special home, please contact Eileen Scanlon at 516.477.0469.

Did You Know?

Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or

a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.

Highlighting Local Businesses

The man behind this business is owner, Mike Cutino. He is the Publisher/CEO of Nightlife Magazine and NY Sports Scene, an alumnus of the State University of New York at Farmingdale, where he’s currently an active member of the Board of Directors and he was also a First Responder during 9/11 with the Nesconset Fire Department. His business venture with Big Italy Pizzeria began four years ago as an investment and it has blossomed, heading in the right direction ever since.

They have been reviewed by seven of the best food critics in New York, getting notoriety in publications such as Nightlife Magazine, NY Sports Scene, Practical Gourmet Magazine, Dan’s Papers, Times Magazine and Long Island Press. Big Italy Pizzeria is a member of the Medford Chamber of Commerce and proudly sponsors different events within the community. They donate to Shriners Hospitals for Children, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Stony Brook Hospital and local fire departments. They also offer giveaways through a couple of different radio stations, one of them being 98.1 WKZE Radio.

From the moment you enter Big Italy Pizzeria, you immediately take note that the establishment is just as inviting as it is cozy. You will find vintage toys and antiques displayed that have been passed down from generations, as well as punny vintage signs and shots taken of years past. There are also personal photos scattered on the walls of different celebrities that Mike has gotten to know personally over the years through his publications.

This pizzeria is one that definitely stands out against the crowds. Although the month of love has passed, they’re still continuing their heart shaped pizzas all year long for you and that special someone to enjoy! Their slices alone are huge; one slice is equivalent to two anywhere else and the cooks are all from Italy themselves. One popular menu item is their Grandma Pie, and it’s safe to say they have

mastered it with an Italian sauce recipe that’s nearly 200 years old from Palermo, Sicily!

Aside from the pleasant aesthetic and delicious pizzas, one of the things that Big Italy Pizzeria emphasizes is allowing their customers to feel at home. Manager, Dale Vigorito is nothing short of attentive, keeping the business flowing through all of the day-to-day operations. With customers coming and going all day long, it is a priority to make sure each customer is treated like family and welcomed with open arms. The same is true when it

comes to the employees as well. Mike Cutino said, “It’s not about me, it’s about the people who work here who make it all come together. My employees are important to me.” He makes it a point to treat all of his employees with respect and generosity, acknowledging that it is ultimately them that allow the business to succeed.

Big Italy Pizzeria offers indoor and outdoor seating options. They are open Monday through Sunday from 11AM to 9PM. For more information visit their website or stop on by!

Friends Of America’s Vet Dogs Chinese Auction Fundraiser April 15

A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-in-need, last week donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.

“Friends of America’s

Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought great credit to our military

or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.

Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who
