onnetquot Central School District high school astronomy students have been working in conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) engineers and astronauts to research the impact of craters on Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Earth’s moon and the asteroid Vesta. The Astronomy students, along with their instructor, Ms. Stephanie Burns, are very excited to continue their experiments.

Thirteen yarn shops from Montauk to Port Washington will be participating in the first annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from March 19th through 22nd.

Over the course of the long weekend, yarn crafters knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of Long Island yarn shops. It is a great way to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn crafters.

Participants are invited to get their Long Island Yarn Crawl Passport and have it stamped as they “crawl” from shop to shop. Crawlers who collect stamps from at least 12 stores can enter to win our grand prize: a $100 gift card from each of the participating stores.

Special edition Long Island Yarn Crawl bags can be purchased at participating shops, or are available as a free gift with a $20 minimum purchase (as supplies last).

Each store has specials planned and will have drawings for door prizes

during the crawl. 500 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 500. It’s a pretty big number. Nearly ten years’ worth of weekly columns under the moniker “In Step,” a title suggested by my dear friend, co-worker and “agent” of sorts, since passed, Peter Schleifer. It was meant to be a take off on my - at that point - 13 years of dancing and the idea that, somehow, I could find a way to engage our weekly readership with my random ramblings and musings on life.

It sounded like a pretty tall order then, and remains so, but having had a passion for writing since the days of poetry units and short story exercises in elementary school, I felt I was up for the challenge. To be given the opportunity to write for a living, to do something I loved and reach an audience… well, that’s pretty special any way you slice it.

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie Suddenly, all those years of working on the high school newspaper, of fine tuning profiles and features in college, and even piecing together my 50-page Honors thesis, came rushing back. The topics may have been varied, the styles quite diverse, but at the root of it all was that feeling that this was something I could do.

Sure, there have been weeks when coming up with an original idea, any idea, was somewhat tedious. Scanning through the archive, there have been plenty of recycled concepts, even a few exact reruns of “classics.” (Classics?

Really? Who do you think you are, Ed Lowe?) But through it all, that same passion has always remained. This is why I studied journalism. This was the reason for my career choice, in spite of all those detractors who warned that

it was impossible to make a living in this field.

Ultimately, though, it was exactly that “reality” that served as added inspiration for me to go after my dreams.

After all, who’s to say what’s profitable, what’s a guarantee for success? And what is success, if you’re not doing something you love?

Ten years. 500 columns.

Such a long time; such a lofty milestone. So much has changed since July of 2005, much of which has been reflected in those columns.

They serve as a public diary of sorts, documenting the highs and lows, and a showcase for my efforts to somehow encapsulate them into words.

Thank you to all those readers who have supported me along the way. Here’s to more memories and milestones!

L’Damian Washington, NFL wide receiver, experienced heartbreak many times throughout his efforts to become a professional athlete.

L’Damian grew up with his three other brothers, LaCourtney, Tomarious and Tobias. His parents were Sonya Washington and William Myles. L’Damian was born in May of 1991, in Shreveport, Louisiana.

When L’Damian was just 6 years old, his father was murdered. Ever since, his mother took care of all four children by herself. Mrs. Washington was the biggest sports fan L’Damian knew. Her smile was the first smile he saw after every game. At age 15, L’Damian’s best friend was murdered. During that same year, Mrs. Washington had been cheering for L’Damian at his high school basketball game when she had a stroke and passed away. He quotes, “I wish I was cherishing her today instead of just her memory.”

SAHIL KAPOOR • LINDENHURST L’Damian and his brothers were automatically forced into adulthood. They decided that they would remain living together.

LaCourtney, the oldest brother, took charge as head of the household. He worked as much as he had to in order to put food on the table and keep their home.

L’Damian started playing football at age 9. He was passionate about playing football. He had an outstanding football season in his senior year with a 3.5 GPA. L’Damian visited Louisiana Tech and Missouri colleges. He loved everything about the University of Missouri. The support from his brothers led L’Damian to signing with Missouri.

In his 2012 season, which was Missouri’s first foray into the SEC, he contributed 443 yards with 2 touchdowns. L’Damian’s career-best performance was in his senior year, with 50 receptions, 893 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. All this time, L’Damian was devoted to keeping

Pro Day was his last chance to make an impression on scouts.

That day, he recorded a 4.39 second 40-yard dash, which ranked among the 20 fastest receivers in the 2014 NFL draft. The Dallas Cowboys signed L’Damian as an undrafted free agent after the draft. He is currently a wide receiver on the Miami Dolphins.

L’Damian sees his story as one of an unimaginable opportunity rather than heartbreak. With his determination and great attitude, L’Damian became an NFL player, but more importantly supported his family. The moral of his life story is not only to be thankful for what you have, but also to stay positive and keep moving forward.

If L’Damian can overcome such difficult obstacles, you can too.

He believes without these difficult experiences, he wouldn’t be the person he is today. L’Damian plans to keep working hard, learn new things, and stay true to himself.

Community Grant Support There were Zombies galore at Connetquot High School in Bohemia on Saturday morning, January 11th.

The colorfully decorated, yet slow-a-foot, creatures were there to blend in with children and adults of the Connetquot school district to have some fun, and help raise money for the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of

Children (CFAC). Real Zombies, from NYZ Zombie Apocalypse (Deer Park), did their best to keep the walkers moving fast!

Moms, dads, children, teachers, administrators and Connetquot Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Lynda G. Adams, came ready to walk the halls of Connetquot High school, ten times, to complete

the 5k goal. Participants did their best to evade the Zombies, and conquer a variety of obstacles and challenges. Each ‘nonzombie’ wore a belt with three flags. As they walked the halls the goal was to avoid zombies who would try to confront the humans, and take away one flag.

When all three flags were ‘surrendered’ the humans would, by the end of the 5k

run, be declared a Zombie for 2015!

Refreshments, and encouragement, were provided by CFAC Board members, including Dr. Gail Cholden, Marcia Williams and Peter Leis. The CFAC provides financial grants to teachers and district schools to purchase equipment and supplies, support special assemblies and training

that directly benefits the students of the Connetquot school district. The CFAC has awarded well over $100,000 in support of school district efforts to enhance the educational opportunities for Connetquot’s children.

Over 99% of the funds raised by the CFAC are returned directly for the benefit of the students of the Connetquot CSD.

The CFAC is a not-forprofit charity and is not an organization of the Connetquot Central School District.

Congratulations to all the participating ‘humans’ and Zombies that took part in a fun-laced event that will benefit the children of the Connetquot School District.

Working collaboratively with high school students, the fifth graders researched applicable timelines and accomplishments and created vision boards with detailed facts and information. The wide array of notable figures included presidents, authors, poets, athletes, actors, musicians and many others that were known in related fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

“The Wax Museum was

a wonderful experience for both the middle school and high school students,” said Longwood High School English teacher and event coordinator Josephine Libassi.

“The middle school students learned how to conduct quality research and also gained invaluable experience in public speaking. The high school students acted as mentors assisting in all phases of the project.

Many of our high school students donned costumes in keeping with the era that their fifth grade counterparts represented.”

Mr. John Delio, Principal of Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School, welcomed Chet and John of the Hip Pickles to the school on February 5th. The Hip Pickles is a percussion group that uses an interactive musical approach to spread the message that reading is fun!

The Hip Pickles called on the excited members of the audience to take part in the presentation by playing

drums, tambourines and … buckets! Students loved the energy of the musical instruments, and the message that encouraged students to read, and participate in Slocum’s PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) program.

PARP is a state-wide PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) program that asks parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes each day. Reading is not only informative,

but fun.

Reading together with parents strengthens reading and communication skills, as well as the relationship between children and their parents.

The assembly was sponsored by the Edith L. Slocum PTA Cultural Arts Program. Mr. Delio would like to thank the members of the PTA, and the Hip Pickles, for such an enjoyable assembly about the joy of reading.

Connetquot Central School District high school astronomy students have been working in conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) engineers and astronauts to research the impact of craters on Earth,

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Earth’s moon and the asteroid Vesta.

Using pictures taken by astronauts on board the International Space Station, the students were able to compare the craters’ impact on Earth, the moon and other planets.

SENIOR CLUB LUNCHEON - On Wednesday, February 25th, Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Connie Kepert joined the seniors of the Albert Tinnie Senior Club for their Black History Month luncheon. The event was held at the Gordon Heights Fire Department located at 23 Hawkins Avenue Medford. The program began with a history lesson of the Gordon Heights Community, which was follow by the biographies of African-Americans that were first in their professions.

Isabella Antonia Gordon, a local sixth grader, joined Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association President Ellyn Okvist and vocal supporters for the March 1st Suffragette Parade down Hawkins Avenue in Ronkonkoma.

As a kickoff to Women’s History Month, the Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association organized the march. New York state gave women the vote in 1917, three years before

the U.S. Government’s 19th Amendment.

Isabella Gordon, who wore a t-shirt with the slogan ‘This is what a Feminist looks like,’ loves history, and was looking forward to her first ‘suffragette’ demonstration!

The marchers, dressed in period costumes, stepped off at 11 a.m. in front of the historic Agnew & Taylor hardware store at the intersection of Portion Road and Hawkins

Avenue.

Following the parade members and supporters met at Flannagan’s Restaurant to toast their success. Mrs. Okvist thanked the Suffolk County Police Department for their support in keeping the marchers safe.

Isabella’s brother Joey, father Mike, Gordon and grandfather Joe Maniaci cheered the marchers as they chanted slogans, and held up signs, supporting a woman’s right to vote!

TOURING THE STATE - Middle Country School District’s Unity Drive Pre-K/ Kindergarten Center students recently explored New York State geography and culture simply within their gym classes. Large panels of original artwork transformed the gym to guide the students on a “field trip” of New York as they “fished for trout” in the Finger Lakes, “hiked” in the Catskill Mountains and “visited” New York City skyscrapers. These activities helped the students build strength, endurance, coordination and motor planning skills, as part of a physical education program that promotes active learning.

communication training, nutrition, and ADRC’s legal advisory committee will provide updates within the organization.

The closing plenary session will be The Purple Angel Project from Alzheimer’s Speaks. In addition, motivational speaker Jim Ryan will be presenting an interactive session on managing thought.

“It’s exciting to have such passionate and accomplished people such as Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby who are able to speak about the issue of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/CEO, ADRC. “Education is key when battling Alzheimer’s.”

The Education Conference and Expo is part of a two-day event to educate and inform

those about Alzheimer’s disease, the causes of the disease and prospective treatments. On March 25th, 2015, ADRC will host its second annual Physician’s Outreach Dinner at the Long Island Marriott from 6 to 9 p.m. The focus of the event will be improving care through quality diagnosis, treatment and resources. Medical and legal experts will discuss research, diagnosis, pharmacological interventions, community resources and the legal and financial components of longterm care planning. (The Physician’s Outreach Dinner is only open to board-certified and boardeligible physicians.)

On February 12th, the Rotary Club of The Moriches honored the members of the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws at its annual dinner at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s dining hall for their hard work in the raising of funds for the camp. The Squaws raised $165,000 for Camp PaQua-Tuck over the past year.

The Squaws are a group of more than 30 women who meet once a month to discuss, plan, and execute

fundraisers for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, a resident summer camp for children and young adults with special needs, in Center Moriches. They are also responsible for hosting the annual Spooky Walk at the camp.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and young adults achieve equality, dignity, and maximum

independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a summertime environment, even offering an alumni week for campers who have aged out. Throughout the program, campers participate in typical summer camp activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating.

Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals for Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles (and sewing machines) and sends them to communities overseas. On Saturday, April 18th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles, sewing machines and cash for their 13th annual collection at the Massapequa Public Library, 40 Harbour Lane, Massapequa.

Pedals for Progress has received, processed and donated over 143,000 bicycles, nearly 3,000 sewing machines and $10.8 million in new spare parts to partner charities in 38 developing

Local Fresh Air Fund volunteers from Western Suffolk attended The Fresh Air Fund’s Tri-State Regional Spring meeting on January 31st, at El Cid in Manhattan. Volunteers spend the day discussing the successes of last year and preparing goals for the upcoming summer and host recruitment season.

Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at starfilled skies or swimming for the first time. Each summer, nearly 4,000 inner-city children visit

suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Main and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program.

Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years-old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years-old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children

are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year.

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. New CEO Named

The Diocese of Rockville Centre today announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Education, Diocese of Rockville Centre (the “Education Corporation”).

Mr. Christopher Marblo will assume responsibility for Catholic Elementary and High School leadership as the new CEO of the Education Corporation, which provides services, support and guidance to those schools operated in connection with the Catholic-school ministry of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

Mr. Marblo brings diverse and deep expertise in education, administration, marketing, fund raising, strategic and fiscal management, leadership, constituent relations and institutional advocacy. The new position will report to the board of the Education Corporation.

Ursuline Sister Joanne Callahan will continue to serve as superintendent until July 1st, 2015, when Mr. Marblo will assume his new position.

“I am most grateful to the search committee for its hard work,” Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop, Diocese of Rockville Centre said.

“I look forward to Chris’s counsel on enhancing our schools so we can ensure they deliver the best education possible in an increasingly competitive and cost-competitive market.”

Along with the hiring of Mr. Marblo, his leadership of the Education Corporation is critical to what is to become a new paradigm in Catholic education in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

“I am very happy to return to my roots on Long Island and in Catholic education,” Mr. Marblo said. “I look forward to working with the Diocesan community to ensure that the long and highlyeffective history of Catholic education continues to unfold in powerful ways and provide a model for 21st century teaching and learning.”

The hiring of Mr. Marblo in the new role of CEO of the Education Corporation demonstrates the commitment of resources to Catholic education to help ensure that it offers Catholics on Long Island a dynamic, diverse, high quality Catholic education into the future.

the opportunity to work with the bishops and all stakeholders, partners, and benefactors of the diocesan schools, implementing a sustainable enrollment strategy while realigning resources and personnel to achieve greater impact across the system.

“The new CEO will help those on the front lines, the teachers and administrators who work so hard each and every day serving those entrusted to their care as well as present and future parents,” Bishop Nelson Pérez, auxiliary bishop, Diocese of Rockville Centre and chair of the ad hoc CEO of Education Search Committee said.

Sister Joanne, who has served in the role of Superintendent of Schools since 1993, will assume the new role of Diocesan Secretary of Education, serving as an ex-officio member of the Education Corporation and continuing to provide her invaluable expertise in operating diocesan Catholic schools. “I look forward to working with Chris as he assumes his role as CEO and know that he will find the Catholic educational community on Long Island welcoming and committed to working to pass on the faith to the students and academic excellence,” Sister Joanne said.

Bikes should be rust free. Bikes with flat tires in need of some repair are accepted. No tricycles.

Sewing machines in working condition are also accepted. Each person who donates also will be asked to donate $10 per bike (tax-deductible) to help defray the cost of shipping the bicycles.

Free Tree Campaign The Arbor Day Foundation is making it easy for everyone to celebrate the arrival of spring by planting trees.

Join the Arbor Day Foundation in March 2015 and receive 10 free white flowering dogwood trees.

“White flowering dogwoods will add beauty to your home throughout the year,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

“Dogwoods are known for

their showy spring flowers, scarlet autumn foliage and red berries that attract songbirds during winter.”

The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation’s Trees for America campaign.

The trees will be shipped postpaid with enclosed planting instructions at the right time for planting between March 1st and May 31st. The 6 to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free of

world countries. In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical effect on whether or not you are able to get to a job or school; it has been found that income goes up 14 percent when a family has a bicycle. For many a sewing machine means having the possibility of making a livelihood.

Bette Bass who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru and now lives in Massapequa, says, “The donation of one bike or sewing machine can literally help put food on the table and smiles on the faces of a whole family.”

Pedals for Progress also promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world. A community owned nonprofit bike store will get its first containerized cargo shipment for free (about 450 bicycles); that repair store then has to earn enough money selling the repaired bikes to pay for the next shipment.

for Progress, says the collection on April 18th will be sent to FIDESMA, a non-profit, nonpolitical, non-religious development foundation in Chimaltenango Guatemala.

Says Schwidenback, “The Long Island Returned Peace Corps volunteers have been integral to the success of Pedals for Progress by effectively recycling the bicycles and sewing machines of Long Island. Of the many organizations that collect bicycles annually, the LIRPCV collections have consistently been the most successful. Their efforts have lifted thousands of people permanently from poverty in Central America, Africa and Eastern Europe.”

“We see this as one way to continue to contribute,” says Kathy Williams Ging.

“As a volunteer in Peru I saw firsthand what a big difference having a bicycle or sewing machine can make in someone’s life.” Brian Richardson of Middle Island, who served

Arbor Day Foundation members also receive a subscription to Arbor Day, the Foundation’s bimonthly publication, and The Tree Book, which contains information about tree planting and care.
