On Feb. 7, Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School welcomed students, teachers, friends and family to the school’s annual “O-Town Circus” assembly. Prior to the performance, fifth graders worked hard in their

physical education classes to learn the skills necessary to perform as clowns, jugglers, plate spinners, stilt walkers and masters of the diablo stick and Chinese yo-yo.

The circus program, supported by the PTA,

is designed to motivate students to participate more fully in physical education and cultural arts activities. The broad smiles on the faces of the performers and audience members confirmed that everyone enjoyed the show.

HISTORY DOESN’T GET OLD - Middle Country Central School District is proud to recognize its eighth-grade students from Dawnwood and Selden Middle Schools for recently presenting their research projects to the Middle Country school community. As part of the district’s National History Day Symposium at each building, students were selected by their social studies teachers for their thorough research and commitment to their studies. Participants shared their knowledge and research to a large audience comprised of parents, district staff, administrators, and members of the Board of Education. As part of the district’s capstone research initiative, these students began their research in fifth grade and will continue throughout their high school years. Several of Middle Country’s students will also be working closely with the National History Day advisers, Ms. Lowe at Selden and Ms. Strong at Dawnwood, to hone their projects for Long Island History Day at Hofstra University in March.

Many people insist they cannot make it through a morning without their favorite cup of coffee. For some, the taste of the coffee might be a secondary consideration. In such instances, caffeine, and the jolt it provides on sleepy, earling mornings, is the true allure of that morning cup of joe.

Consuming caffeine in moderation should not have an adverse effect on many people’s overall health.

However, it’s important to learn just how much caffeine is in your morning coffee. That’s because the side effects of consuming too much caffeine can be severe. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, consuming more than 400 milligrams of coffee can be harmful. The Christian tradition of Lent is celebrated across the globe by many different denominations of the faith.

Lent is a 40-day period of sacrifice that begins on Ash Wednesday and culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

Lent is designed to help Christians prepare for Easter through prayer, repentance of sins, almsgiving, denying the ego, and putting and end to sinful practices.

Fasting is a component of Lent, as is abstinence from certain behaviors.

In fact, in some Western countries, Catholics have been encouraged to adopt forms of abstinence that do not involve food and

drink during Lent. All actions serve as forms of self-denial to mirror the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for his people.

Abstaining from alcohol is not mandatory during Lent. That might be traced to ancient times, when wine and other forms of alcohol were safer to drink than pathogen-filled water sources. But many people now choose to give up alcohol for Lent.

Today, fasting is primarily reserved for Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, including Good Friday. Adherents may opt to fully fast, but most only eschew meat and poultry as a nod to selfdenial, opting for seafood and vegetarian fare instead.

While much focus is placed on what is denied during Lent, it can be an ideal time to reflect on what is gained by living a life in which God is first and foremost. Spending more time in prayer and away from trivial distractions can be a way to live a more faithful life during Lent and beyond. In addition, aspiring to be more Christlike during Lent can make this special season even more powerful. During Lent, Christians can make a concerted effort to help the poor, work with a charity or volunteer at their church.

Lent is a solemn time, but one that can bolster one’s faith.

Pets bring much joy to the lives they touch. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog.

Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial.

The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin.

This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels.

Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy.

The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved.

Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so.

• Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”

Second Graders Serenade Second graders in Rachel White’s music class at Sycamore Avenue Elementary School are busy yearround, spreading song around their school and community. The students perform at the school’s monthly PTA meetings and also visit their “grandfriends” across the street at The Arbors Assisted Living Communities at Bohemia every month or two.

The next week, on Valentine’s Day, they crossed the street to The Arbors to offer their “grandfriends” the same repertoire, along with handmade Valentine’s Day cards.

Student Ingenuity Revs Up At Sagamore Speedway For 20 years, Tom McGrath’s seventh grade technology classroom at Sagamore Middle School in the Sachem Central School District has transformed into the Sagamore Speedway to culminate a lesson on aerodynamics with a wooden racecar competition between classmates.

The elaborate raceway serves as the test center for

the wooden cars students creatively design that incorporate engineering and design principals to reach a desired outcome.

The detailed process requires students to brainstorm ideas, create a design, cut and customize their car before adding the finishing touches with elaborate paint schemes.

The aerodynamically designed and pneumati-

cally powered racecar competition is the culminating event of the unit and draws great excitement from its competitors. Peers face off in head-to-head races on the two-lane track until a winner is determined from the bracketed format of the competition. Additionally, a separate competition is held to determine the most aesthetically pleasing car.

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame High School Recognition Program is designed to identify Long Island High School music programs that are creating valuable music experiences for their students and that are incorporating the National and New York State’s Standards for the arts in creative and meaningful ways.

“We are very excited to offer Long Island schools an opportunity to have their music programs objectively evaluated,” said LIMHOF Vice Education Committee Chairman Tom Needham.

“We will not only honor programs but will also share feedback and learn more about the challenges each school faces as we continue to support and promote music education on Long Island.”

Signs You May Have A Thyroid Problem The thyroid gland plays an essential role in the human body. According to the online healthcare publishing company Medicine.net, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck that produces the hormones that regulate metabolism.

When the thyroid gland’s ability to do its job is compromised, the effects can be serious and lead to a host of symptoms that don’t go away.

For example, hyperthyroidism is often caused by Graves’ disease,

an immune system disorder that’s most common among women. Some peoples’ thyroids have become overactive because they consumed too many foods that contained iodine, such as table salt, fish and seaweed. However, Healthline notes that such instances are rare.

While people may not be able to prevent thyroid conditions from developing, they can keep a watchful eye out for any of the aforementioned symptoms of overactive or underactive thyroids. Any such symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately.

Medicine.net notes that, in most cases, thyroid disorders can be managed with treatment and are not life-threatening. However, the outlook for people with thyroid conditions is always better when symptoms are reported early.

Project Innovative Solution Award Winners On Saturday, January 11, the Longwood Junior High School Robotics Team captured the “Project Innovative Solution Award” at the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Robotics Competition ensuring their participation at the 2020 SBPLI Championship at Longwood High School on March 1, 2020.

Using this year’s theme, “City Shaper,” teams challenged urban planning

and architecture to improve quality of life. Projects were judged in three areas: Innovation Project, Robot Design, and Core Values, which exemplify characteristics of teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Under the direction of advisors Victoria Holborow and Alyssa Pascual and using personal experience, the students created an application to improve the efficiency of emergency

Be Safe When Lightning Strikes Carolina, and Texas also must be extra cautious when lightning strikes.

To stay safe, remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes.

•Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule.

After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder, offers the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

•Avoid open areas outside.

Do not be the tallest object in a field or area. Also, stay away from isolated tall trees, utility poles and towers.

•If no shelter is available, crouch low with as little

of your body touching the ground as possible.

•Lightning can travel through indoor plumbing, so avoid using water during a thunderstorm. Similarly, lightning can travel through electrical systems, like phones, radios and television reception systems.
