onnetquot Central School District Idle Hour Elementary School second-grade students recently participated in an interactive assembly with popular local storyteller and musician Harvey Heilbrun during the school’s annual Parents As Reading Partners event. Mr. Heilbrun used entertaining folktales and sing-alongs to encourage students to develop strong reading habits. The PARP program is designed to encourage parents to read with children.

Shifting The Stones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process.

Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day.

And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case

may be.

Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat.

As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play.

Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

particular time frame, can help. Sometimes, the simple act of checking an item off can make all the difference in turning a gloomy outlook into one of positivity.

One item. One stone. One day at a time. And repeat, for as long as it takes to accomplish whatever it is your goal may be, whether something as simple as saving money for a particular item; or perhaps a far loftier ambition to go out and change the world.

Whatever it is, however complex, all can be achieved using the same basic steps.

So begin. And maintain.

And, before you know it, this newfound motivation will become the stuff of habit – the good kind… the kind that leads to a fulfilling and successful life.

STUDENT LEADER - Newfield High School student of the month Jacob Murphy is joined by Middle Country Central School District Board of Education President Dr. Karen Lessler, his sister Sarah, his brother Aiden, Superintendent Dr. Roberta Gerold, his father Jim and his brother Ryan, Jacob’s mother Christi, Newfield High School Assistant Principal Kim Pelan, Assistant Principal Kevin Richman, Principal Scott Graviano and Assistant Principal Mark Palios celebrate his achievements as student of the month. Jacob is heavily involved in student government and sits on the superintendent’s student leadership committee.

Four students from the Middle Country Central School District were recently named February Students of the Month for achieving excellence as leaders in the areas of academics, athletics and extracurricular activities.

Centereach High School senior Mark James Beukelaer, Newfield High School senior Jacob Murphy, Dawnwood Middle School seventh grader Oisin O’Sullivan and Selden Middle School seventh grader Maxwell Martin are this month’s honorees.

“These students are leaders for their peers and

positive influences in their community,” said Middle Country Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “We are proud and fortunate to have them as students so that they may continue to make a positive impact on our district.”

Centereach High School senior Mark James Beukelaer will graduate in June 2015 having completed four Advanced Placement (AP) courses and seven college-level courses. He has received recognition as an AP Scholar based on his performance on exams. Mark James has earned an Advanced

Regents Diploma, and he was named an All-County Scholar Athlete by Suffolk County for his grades and excellence as team captain of the men’s varsity soccer team. Mark James is still in the process of deciding which college he will attend in pursuit of a career in the medical field.

Mark James currently has scholarship offers from SUNY Albany, New Haven, Mt. St. Mary’s, Delaware, Oneonta and Quinnipiac.

Newfield High School senior Jacob Murphy currently serves as treasurer of the student government. In years past, he served as council member, sophomore class president and junior class executive assistant. Jacob is heavily involved in school activities including video club, art honor society,

National Honor Society and the superintendent’s student leadership committee. After striking an interest in marine biology, Jacob pursued an internship at SUNY Stony Brook’s Marine Laboratory last summer and was offered an extension through the school year.

Jacob will attend either Suffolk Community College or SUNY Stony Brook in the fall to study marine biology.

Oisin O’Sullivan has maintained High Honor Roll status since entering the school in sixth grade and currently has a GPA of 97. When not focusing on his studies, Oisin shows dedication and discipline while swimming competitively every day after school with the Sachem Swim Club.

Maxwell Martin is consistently on high honor roll and ended his sixth grade year with no final course grade below a 90. Maxwell has been equally successful as a member of Selden’s basketball and football

teams. As quarterback, Max was credited with six touchdowns in one game against the team’s rival. He hopes to pursue a career in the NFL, but plans to train as a physical therapist in case he does not get drafted.

Student Spotlight BULLYING Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t.

Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them.

Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me.

If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations.

When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day.

If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.”

If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult

immediately.

Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you.

Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying.

In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying.

Bullying is a serious subject.

FEBRUARY HONOREE - Middle Country Central School District’s Centereach High School February student of the month Mark James Beukelaer will graduate high school having completed four Advanced Placement classes and seven college level courses. He plans to pursue a career in the medical field.

Since 2009, through the generosity of their corporate partners and private donations, Long Island Cares, Inc. has provided free pet food and supplies to individuals and families in need, in an effort to help them maintain their pets at home as opposed to placing them in shelters.

This year, Long Island Cares is partnering with the Suffolk County Legislature to expand awareness of pets needs and to help increase donations of vital pet food and supplies.

Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III will be hosting a Pet Food Drive until April 30th at his office located at 1609 Grundy Avenue in Holbrook. Donations can include, but are not limited to, 5 or 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, treats, kitty litter, new pet toys, and any type of food for hamsters, reptiles, fish and ferrets. All pet food must be unopened and in its original packaging.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi had the privilege of swearing in the new Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce of the Greater Ronkonkoma at their General Meeting on February 23rd at Mamma Mia’s in Ronkonkoma. SHARING A MESSAGE OF KINDNESS - Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School 5th grade peer leaders recently performed a play with a theme of “Peace, Love and Kindness” as part of the school’s Random Acts of Kindness Week. The play was based on the children’s book Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed, which stresses the importance of being kind to friends, family and strangers. The assembly is part of a district-wide initiative designed to teach students the importance of good citizenship and the benefits of community service.

The theme of the Healthy Heart Clinic at Academy LI Milliken Technical Center sponsored by the Clinical Medical Assisting Program was Love Yourself Love Your Heart.

The clinical area of the classroom had three examination rooms set up for blood pressure screenings and for clients to have their height and weight checked for Body Mass Index (BMI). Each examination room had a bed, a privacy curtain, and blood pressure screening equipment. Clients rotated to a separate area where they could have their cholesterol and glucose

evaluated.

Teacher Deborah Leedham said, “We have 44 students enrolled in the morning session and 38 in the afternoon session.

The career opportunities are growing tremendously.

Our students can get jobs in a doctor’s office, a walkin clinic, and hospitals.”

The occupational outlook for medical assistants, according to the New York State Department of Labor, has grown much faster than the average for all occupations. The growth of the baby-boom population will increase the demand for medical services. With that, physicians may hire

healthy eating. Students interacted with puppets and demonstrated how they brush their own teeth using a big tooth brush.

Students gained a deeper understanding of dental hygiene and how healthy eating is a crucial step.

Students also received dental goodie bags with a

more assistants to perform administrative and clinical duties, allowing physicians to see more patients.

The clinic was a practical test of the student’s abilities. They also had an independent assignment that would be a part of their final portfolio. “Each student had to create an informational brochure about a disease and disorder of the heart. In addition to having practical skills, the students must demonstrate that they are computer literate, can do research, and can cite information properly,” said Teacher Mary Ann BRUSHING UP - A kindergarten student at Middle Country Central School District’s DeMillio.

Totes For Tots Drive The Town of Brookhaven’s Youth Bureau and the Holtsville Internal Revenue Service Center have once again teamed up for the annual “Totes For Tots” drive to help children entering foster care.

Under the program, which is run by the Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE program, new and gently used duffel bags, large backpacks and small suitcases are filled with coloring books, crayons, stuffed animals, a blanket, toothbrush and toothpaste

and other items.

These bags are then given to displaced children who are being moved to foster homes to help with the packing of their belongings, rather than having their possessions placed in bags.

Residents are asked to donate new or gently used suitcases or backpacks, as well as new tooth brushes, tooth paste, combs, brushes, books, small blankets, stuffed animals, crayons, coloring books, writing paper and pencils.

The Town will have donation boxes set up at Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville and at the Highway Department’s main office Old Town Road in Coram starting on March 2nd. Business hours at both locations are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
