Connetquot High School’s Model United Nations Club recently showcased their skills and talents when they hosted 300 high school students from Long Island and New York City for the 2017 Model UN Conference.

“The hard work and dedication that these students have shown

throughout the year is awe-inspiring,” said club advisor Jennifer Bay. “The effort they put in to tackle current events and world issues is inspirational, and gives me hope for our world’s future.”

As part of their participation in the program, Model UN members are able to

step into the shoes of ambassadors representing their nations at the UN in Manhattan.

During the conference, students debate current issues, prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy and negotiate with supporters and adversaries.

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently welcomed Connetquot Central School District Spanish language teachers along with several members of the Connetquot National Foreign Language Honor Society for a collaborative project with Bosti’s fifth-

grade C-Quest students.

Throughout the course of their visit, Ann Marie Lombardi of OakdaleBohemia Middle School and Will Bedell of Connetquot High School along with the students worked with the fifth-graders to further their understanding of the culture, geography

and worldwide use of the Spanish language. By utilizing fun games and activities, students learned about the traditional Hispanic holiday known as the “Day of the Dead,” as well as numbers, days of the week and months of the year.

Academic Honor

As a result of her continued academic promise and success, Connetquot High School senior Abigail Savit has been named a finalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Abigail is one of 15,000 students throughout the

nation to achieve finalist standing after being selected as a semifinalist earlier this school year.

She earned these honors based on her outstanding PSAT score (1480 out of 1520), academic record and successful completion of a comprehensive application

process.

She will be notified in May if she is one of the 7,500 students across the nation who will receive one of the National Merit Scholarships, worth approximately $33 million in total.

Are We There Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble.

Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment.

Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route.

Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never.

Not once.

Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

being a bridge here before?).

And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood.

How is this possible??

At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map.

It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again.

That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

Prominent labor leader, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO will be honored

by The Suffolk Community College Foundation at its annual Salute to Excellence Gala, whose proceeds will be used to fund need and merit-based scholarships, emergency student loans and quality academic enrichment programs. The Foundation distributed more than $650,000 in scholarships and aid last year.

The Salute to Excellence Gala celebrating Weingarten and the college will be held on May 4th at

In keeping with their highly successful “Leader in Me” program, Student Lighthouse members at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently came together to discuss ways they could help make their school be a more positive and friendly learning environment.

The Student Lighthouse team consists of a group of pre-K through fifth-grade

students who collaborate to discuss schoolwide initiatives which will help to enhance their learning experience. Additionally, the students take part in monthly service learning projects geared toward benefiting both the school and community.

For the month of January, the team decided that the schoolwide “Wildly Important Goal” should be to read a grand

total of 400 books. Due to everyone’s desire to read, the school was able to surpass its goal by reaching 832 books. In February, the students decorated the lobby’s “Leadership Tree” with inspirational messages, which they will be presenting to their “Grandfriends” at the Arbors Assisted Living Facility in Bohemia.
