If you work or volunteer at a shelter and have a special dog that you believe would be a good match for a Veteran in need, you can submit a short video and biography of the dog to Paws of War through their website! They will then consider your rescued dog for their program once they have received all the information you can provide. All dogs that will be considered must be rescued/ shelter dogs, social, healthy, eager to please, good with other dogs and good with people.

You can also donate to Paws of War to help them carry out their mission.

Individuals can donate on their website or by mail. There is truly no donation amount that is too small. They would not be able to carry out their mission of helping both ends of the leash without the generosity of their supporters. All donations are taxdeductible.

Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich

This Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich is a fun take on the traditional Jewish-style favorite, but swaps out fatty corned beef for stir-fried veggies!

"You still get that flavor and texture you would with a regular Reuben, but you can enjoy it with less guilt because this version is packed with veggies," shares Patrick.

1 Pack of Portabello Mushrooms 1 Red Onion 1 Box/Bag of Baby Spinach Leaves Non-dairy Butter Substitute Swiss Cheese Small Bag of Sauerkraut (drained) Seedless Jewish-style Rye Bread Marie's Thousand Island Dressing Large Frying Pan/Skillet

Remove swiss cheese covered bread and plate the slices, with each slice facing up. Spread one or two tablespoons of Thousand Island Dressing onto each slice. Scoop sauerkraut onto each slice above dressing. Lastly, scoop drained veggie mixture onto bread and close sandwich.

Preparation Combine diced portobello mushrooms, spinach leaves and sliced onion into a frying pan that has 1/4 cup water at the bottom. Trun on high until stove gets going. Then reduce heat to low

In third grade, students continued their study of buoyancy and states of matter during an exciting

activity in which students designed a boat made from tin foil that could hold the greatest number of pennies.

As the activity progressed, students collected data on their vessels and how they performed.

Continuing the day of creativity, coding

was incorporated into a challenging activity for fourth-grade students.

They used the Scratch program to code a robot to complete various tasks such as traveling through space and playing basketball.

Roofing Solutions To Environmental Concerns (NAPSI)—More and more Americans are calling the nation’s cities home.

According to 2010 Census data, an estimated 80.7 percent of Americans now live in urban areas—up from 79 percent in 2000.

Not only does this urban population increasingly tax the country’s infrastructure, but it is also having an effect—both directly and indirectly—on the environment.

The Heat Is On The urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon in which metropolitan areas are typically warmer than nearby rural areas mainly due to the large areas of paved surfaces and buildings that capture the sun’s energy, hold it and

slowly radiate the heat back out into the air. The concentration of heat in these densely populated regions creates additional health risks for residents due to heat exposure and the enhanced formation of air pollutants, especially ozone.

Rooftops, roads and parking lots comprise a large percentage of the man-made surface area in urban areas. When analyzing effective UHI mitigation strategies, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory determined that widespread deployment of “cool roofs” and “cool pavements” would decrease urban temperatures, which in turn could offset some or

all of the projected future warming trends.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. Beyond the building itself, cool roofs can also benefit the environment by: • Reducing local air temperatures; • Lowering peak electricity demand, which can help prevent power outages; and • Reducing power plant emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury.

In order to help protect the environment and meet increasingly stringent

Growing up, my parents were “not animal people” as they would often remind me at the mere mention of wanting a dog.

I never experienced the joy and responsibility of having a pet when I was growing up. As a result, it just wasn’t on my radar as a kid, or even in my early twenties. At the age of twenty-nine, I found myself newly single, living in New York City and yearning for something or someone to care for other than myself. Without overthinking it, I adopted a two month old Shih Ztu and brought him home. With no idea of how to take care of a dog, I stumbled into a pet shop where I was loaded down with puppy food, vitamins, wee wee pads, a bed, a brush, food/water bowls and just about every other accoutrement you can think of.

I can remember the first time I let this pup run loose in my tiny studio apartment. He was a ball of energy; a little white pouf ball of love as he snuggled up close in my

lap. I named him Francis Albert after Frank Sinatra, of course, which later incarnated to Frankie.

Frankie was my first official family member. Not the family I was born into, but the family I would create on my own. He was there before my marriage and before my son. At one point in time, it was just me and Frankieboy. When my son was born, we hemmed and hawed about how Frankie may react to a new baby in the house. Would he behave?

Would we have to worry? From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, Frankie took on the role of pseudo-nanny (yes, like in Peter Pan); watching over the crib, alerting us when the baby was crying, and gently laying down next to our newborn son when he took his naps. It was astonishing; even more so, since Frankie-boy was not exactly known for exemplary behavior.

In fact, he flunked out of dog obedience school. True story.

As my son grew, it was so much fun to watch the two of them play together and bond. Rolling in the grass, playing ball or fetch, and

running around the house or the yard. It would always bring a smile to my face.

Now, at fourteen, Frankie is getting on in years as my son is getting stronger and stronger and hitting his stride. I know there will come a time when Frankie is no longer with us, and it is hard to imagine. We still keep him running for exercise and we love him up as much as we can.

I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to care for another living being back when it was just me and him.

These days, there is another dog in the fold, our Pitbull mix, Boris. To see this little Shih Ztu and large Pitbull get on together is a riot. They vacillate between rivalry and playfulness.

Add my two favorite horses, Kingston in Melville, New York, and Lucky the beautiful Arabian, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into the mix and I just can’t imagine a life without animals around me. I am so glad that my son is growing up experiencing the joy that animals bring.

The Right Foods Can Fight Inflammation T he human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses.

Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings.

While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur — the natural side effects of an immune system response — but will soon dissipate.

However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present.

This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. Unfortunately, the inflammation that is a hallmark of immune defense becomes a daily problem that may result in chronic pain and other complications. What many people may not realize is that the foods that they are putting into their bodies may exacerbate inflammatory responses, while others may help keep inflammation at bay.

People with rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s, and other chronic illnesses may find that turning to the right diet can tame inflammation and other symptoms. Recently, many health experts, including Dr. Barry Sears, founder of the Inflammation and Research

Conversely, certain foods and beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation for many people. These include: tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables; nuts, like almonds and walnuts; fatty fish, berries, avocados, green tea, peppers, grapes, turmeric and dark chocolate.

Including these foods in one’s daily diet may help to relieve the pain, bloating and fatigue associated with inflammation. It is important to speak with a doctor before

making any significant dietary changes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease accounts for nearly 25 percent of all deaths in the United States each year.

Such statistics are disconcerting, but they can serve as a wake-up call that compels people to prioritize their heart health.

Fortunately, heart disease is often preventable, and people can employ various strategies to reduce their risk.

If you smoke, stop smoking right now.

One of the best things to do to protect the heart is to stop smoking. The Heart Foundation indicates that smoking reduces oxygen in the blood and damages blood vessel walls. Why do I have depression?

Everyone has a bad day here or there, but people with depression may wonder why theirs are more than just a bad day. The WHO notes that depression is a byproduct of a complex interaction of social, psychological and biological factors. Exposure to adverse life events, such as unemployment, the death of a loved one or psychological trauma, can increase peoples’ risk of developing depression.

Depression also may be caused by physical conditions. The WHO says cardiovascular disease can lead to depression.

What are the symptoms of depression?

The Mayo Clinic notes that one in 10 people whose depression goes untreated commit suicide. That only highlights the importance of recognizing the symptoms of depression and acting once any have been identified or suspected. Symptoms can include: • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions • Fatigue • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness • Pessimism and hopelessness • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness or sleeping too much • Irritability • Restlessness • Loss of interest in things once deemed pleasurable, including sex

• Overeating or appetite loss

Explore Benefits of HIIT Fitness T here are new workout programs popping up in fitness centers around the U.S. that are allowing fitness-minded individuals to test their mettle. Recently, one of the more popular fitness regimens is HIIT, and it’s probably available at a fitness center near you.

HIIT is an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training. The American College of Sports Medicine says HIIT held steady among the top fitness trends for 2017 and 2018. The crux of HIIT workout routines are sustained, intense exercise followed by active recovery periods. WebMD says that HIIT can be used with any type of popular cardio workout, including rowing, jumping rope, speed walking, stair climbing, and more. Many gyms also build programs around HIIT that may include “boot camp” type workouts that utilize equipment or exercises using people’s own body weight to burn calories.

A typical HIIT training session lasts about 30 minutes. Workouts are performed at 80 to 90 percent of a person’s maximal heart rate, which is the number of times the heart will beat in a minute without overexerting itself. Recovery periods are not entirely rest. They tend to be shorter than active periods, and come in at around 40 to 50 percent of the maximal heart rate.

In essence, a lower intensity workout as “rest.” The workout will alternate between the working and recovery periods.

HIIT workouts can be effective at boosting your metabolism and helping people burn calories faster. They also help to develop physical endurance. The science behind the workouts has to do with EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The fitness lifestyle resource Daily Burn says that HIIT will help burn more fat and calories than regular steady workouts because EPOC\0x2008 is an oxygen shortage in the body that occurs during the intense portions of the HIIT workouts.

During recovery, the body will ask for more oxygen, creating an after burn and a metabolic disturbance. The fitness guide, Fitness Blender, states that the intense training will result in the body burning calories at a higher rate for up to 48 to 72 hours after exercising. This means that the benefits of HIIT training continue even while you are, say, relaxing on the couch watching your favorite Netflix show later on that day. This type of workout regimen is especially good for those in relatively good shape, who need to drop a large amount of weight relatively quickly. For example, a new mother looking to drop

her baby weight.

People may see greater results by doing HIIT workouts three times a week for half of the duration than they would if they were performing more typical workouts more frequently. For those whose schedules are already jam-packed, HIIT can be a more efficient way of exercising.

HIIT requires a strong baseline fitness lev-

el, so beginners or those who have been out of the gym for some time are urged to start slowly. Also, since HIIT causes high demand on the heart and respiratory systems, it is essential to discuss the regimen with a doctor to find out if HIIT is a smart choice depending on your personal medical history. Once you are medically in the clear, consult with a qualified trainer at your local gym to find the best routine for you.

The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening.

However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts.

Many older adults do not get enough sleep due to insomnia, states Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine. “Get your snow thrower serviced now, before repair shops are busy. Weather is more unpredictable than ever so you want to be ready,” advises Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) president and CEO Kris Kiser. “Review your owner’s manual so you can use your equipment safely, and have the right fuel on hand. Remember, protect your power. Gasolinepowered snow throwers should use E10 or less.”

These hints can help: Getting Ready Have you read your owner’s manual? Read up for safe handling procedures. If you lost your manual, you can look it up online (and store a copy on your computer).

Review how to operate the controls. Be able to shut off

your equipment quickly.

Have you checked your equipment since storing it? Make sure equipment is completely powered off when checking it over. If you forgot to drain the fuel before storing, drain the gas tank. Adjust any cables and check the auger— again when the equipment is powered off.

Did you put your equipment where you can get to it easily? Move your equipment to a convenient and accessible location.

Have you purchased the right fuel? Be sure to use the correct fuel, as recommended by your equipment’s manufacturer (for more information, see www.

L o o k B e f o r e Yo u P u m p . com). Place gasoline in a fuel container and label it with the date purchased and ethanol content. Use only fresh fuel and make sure fuel is stored safely and out of the reach of children.

Are you fueling safely?

Fill up the fuel tank on your snow thrower outside while the engine is cold.

Never add fuel to a running or hot engine.

Are batteries charged? If using a battery or electricpowered snow thrower, make sure batteries are fully charged.

Is the area you intend to clear free of obstructions or hidden obstacles?

Snow can hide objects.

Doormats, hoses, balls, toys, boards, wires and other debris should be removed from the areas you intend to clear.

Are you dressed properly? Locate your safety gear and place it in an accessible location.

Plan to wear safety glasses, gloves and footwear that can handle cold and slippery surfaces.

Operating Snow Throwers Safely— Questions to Ask Do you have a cleanout tool or stick? NEVER

put your hands inside the auger or chute. Use a clean-out tool (or stick) to unclog snow or debris from your snow thrower.

Do you turn off your snow thrower if you need to clear a clog? Always turn off your snow thrower and wait for all moving parts to come to a complete stop before clearing any clogs or debris.

Do you use your snow thrower in visible

conditions? Never operate the snow thrower without good visibility or light.

Can you aim your snow thrower with care? Never throw snow toward people or cars. Do not allow anyone to stand in front of your snow thrower. Keep children and pets away from your snow thrower when it is operating.

Will you use extreme caution on slopes and hills?

Do not attempt to clear

steep slopes. Use caution when changing directions on slopes or inclines.

Do you know where your cord is? If you have an electric-powered snow thrower, be aware of where the power cord is at all times. Avoid tripping. Do not run over the power cord.

Snow Thrower Usage: Questions To Help You Keep Safety In Mind

Feats of physics were on full display at Sachem High School North as students in Robert Wentzel’s Rocket and Aircraft Design class assembled and tested personal hovercrafts as part of a recent project.

Applying several laws of physics to determine the

force needed to lift their hovercrafts, students tested the pressure produced by a leaf blower and determined they would have sufficient output to lift the vehicles from the ground. Using pool liner and plywood, students assembled their hovercrafts before testing

them with help from members of their group.

As the project progresses, students will modify their personal hovercrafts to maneuver the hallways of the school building.

Learning in Comfort Due to a generous grant put forward by the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children, third-grade students at Idle Hour Elementary School have been afforded the opportunity to enhance their learning in the classroom with assistance from “Flexible Seating.”

The students are offered

the option of selecting a rubberized stool or a Therapist’s Choice stability balance disk, in an effort to continue their studies in a more relaxed and focused manner. According to third-grade teacher Stephanie Zelinski, the students’ education is enhanced because the stools and wobbles allow for free movement,

allowing them to complete assignments with more focus and less frustrations or negative behaviors.

The district would like to thank third-grade teachers Kathleen Bankoff and Stephanie Zelinski for proposing the “Flexible Seating” idea to CFAC, thus bringing the initiative into the classroom setting.

Ringing in the Chinese New Year lesson, the students were taught how to properly say “Happy New Year” in the Chinese language, and were presented with treat bags for their successes in correctly pronouncing the phrase. As a craft-based activity, the students were taught by both Mrs. Zhang and Joyce how to properly make Chinese lanterns,
