Fresh Herbs That Can Reduce Your Reliance On Sodium

Salt has long been used to add flavor to people’s favorite foods. In fact, the use of salt as a means to preserving foods and adding flavor to recipes dates back to ancient times and has led to countless conflicts ever since.

According to History. com, wars over access to salt reserves in China are believed to have been fought as early as 6,000 B.C. Though that shows just how valuable salt has been throughout much of

human history, it doesn’t indicate the negative effects that can result from diets that feature excessive amounts of sodium.

The American Heart Association notes that sodium plays an essential role in the human body by regulating the kidneys and helping to control the body’s fluid balance.

Sodium also helps send nerve impulses and affects muscle function. However, excessive amounts of sodium can compromise heart health. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of sodium in the bloodstream pulls water into the blood vessels, increasing the total volume of blood within them. As more blood flows through blood vessels, blood pressure increases. Over time, that can adversely affect blood

vessels and speed up the build-up of plaque that can block blood flow. Higher blood pressure forces the heart to work harder and increases a person’s risk for heart disease.

So what about sodium, a mineral so valued, and indeed vital to human existence, that it’s led to wars and created countless devotees in kitchens over the centuries? If it’s flavor cooks are aiming for, it’s possible to reduce reliance on sodium and increase the use of fresh herbs without sacrificing flavor. Such a transition can improve heart health and introduce a host of new flavors at meal time.

Basil The AHA notes that basil has a sweet and fresh flavor profile and is best added to

a dish right before serving.

Freshly cut basil leaves can be added to any number of dishes, including tomato sauces, pastas, salads, pizzas, and eggs.

Cilantro Cilantro are the delicate leaves and stems of the coriander plant. Like basil, cilantro should be added to a dish right before serving and should not be cooked.

Cilantro can be paired with beans, tomatoes, corn, and avocados among other foods, and is widely used when preparing Mexican foods at home.

Oregano The AHA notes that Greek dishes often combine oregano, mint and lemon to create a memorable, delicious flavor profile. If chopping fresh oregano, strip the leaves from the

stem and then discard the stem.

Parsley Parsley isn’t just a garnish used to add aesthetic appeal to plates. Flat-leaf parsley provides a light and fresh flavor, while the AHA notes that curly parsley offers a slightly peppery profile.

Parsley is typically added

to a dish during the final minutes of cooking or right before serving, and can be paired with chicken, fish, potatoes, and pasta among countless other foods.

These are just a handful of herbs that can give meals a flavorful punch and help chefs avoid an overreliance sodium in their recipes.

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat.

However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.

Start Slowly Before Starting Home Improvement Projects

Just like certain exercises, home improvement projects may involve heavy lifting, bending, moving, and stretching. After spending much of the winter indoors and largely sedentary, some homeowners may be tempted to jump into projects with gusto when the warm weather returns, but that can be a recipe for injury that can sideline DIYers. Homeowners can start slowly and then gradually work longer hours, just as they might do when returning to exercise after time off. Homeowners can see how their muscles feel after an hour or two. Homeowners who vary the tasks they tackle will use different muscle groups, which can reduce strain and limit injury risk.

Whenever possible, opt for ergonomic tools that can reduce users’ risk of repetitive stress injuries.

The Charity of the Month for February is the

Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition www.babylonbreastcancer.org

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily through their volunteers.

This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Volunteering does not only benefit the cause, but it greatly benefits the person doing so as well. Focusing on others is a great way for one to heal, self-reflect and find joy.

Below is a heart-felt message from Nick Radesca, a Volunteer Board Member and Treasurer at the BBCC: “I was devastated when my wife passed away in 2017 of metastatic breast cancer.

The agonizing ordeal leading to her death was terrifying and exhausting - which had me at her side at doctor appointments,

c h e m o treatments, repeated lengthy emergency room visits, in her hospital rooms sleeping in a bedside chair and finally caring for her at home during hospice.

I felt a deep void when my wife of 53 years was gone but I had to move on somehow, so I searched the internet for ways I might help others going through the same hardship and happened across Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) in need of volunteer office help. Since I was a C.P.A., I thought I’d give it a try and three years later I’m a member of BBCC’s allvolunteer Board as well as it’s Treasurer.

When I remember my late wife’s dark, frightening, cancer filled days, I cringe to think there are people in this world who must go through this nightmare alone - which is not the case in the Babylon Township because residents have BBCC. Most people BBCC help do not have a devoted healthy caregiver and many are in financial distress, so the variety of free services BBCC’s staff of angels provide is an inexpressible blessing.”

Extremely Cold Temperatures Can Cause Serious Problems For Your Pets Extremely cold temperatures can cause serious problems for your pets who are outside even for short periods of time.

Most pets are not bred to withstand temperatures below freezing, and even those that are if not acclimated to the cold are at risk. When is it too cold? A good rule of thumb is, if its too cold for you to be outside without a coat, it’s also too cold for your pet.

Below are some things to keep in mind regarding the safety of your pet: Never leave your dog unattended in a car. Cars turn into freezers very quickly. Never warm your car up in the garage, this can trap carbon monoxide and kill people and pets in minutes.

Make sure your pet has a collar with identification. Snow can be disorienting for an animal and it is easy for them to get lost.

Keep space heaters away from where animals can get to them. They provide a risk for the animal to get burned and for them to be knocked over, causing a fire.

Dogs and cats can quickly experience frostbite (especially ears and paws) and hypothermia. Symptoms of hypothermia include Severe lethargy, decreased appetite, decreased responsiveness, low body temperature, discolored skin – especially red or black extremities.

If you have chickens,

especially those with longer beards or combs, they are also susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Please use insulated walls and chicken coop heaters.

If you use ice melt on your driveway or walkway, this can be extremely painful for dogs who walk through it. If your dog has walked on it, immediately wipe you their paws with luke warm water after. Please note, a good alternative is pet friendly ice melt!

Also, pet boots can be great way to keep your dog safe.

Lastly, bang on the hood of your car and check for cats who may have climbed under your car for warmth.

living Dental Visits Are Essential Health Care, Here’s Why (StatePoint) If maintaining good health is top of mind these days, as it is for many, be sure to factor dental hygiene into the equation.

Medical experts say that a healthy mouth is critical to whole-body health, and warn that during the COVID-19 pandemic, certain stress-related oral health concerns are on the rise.

Regular exercise has been linked to a host of health benefits. People who exercise regularly can lower their risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, and routine exercise can improve mood and potentially delay the onset of cognitive decline.

As vital as physical activity is to a healthy lifestyle, there is such a thing as too much exercise.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, rest is an important part

of training. Without ample rest, the body does not have time to recover before the next workout. That lack of rest not only adversely affects performance, but also increases a person’s risk for health problems, including injuries that can sideline athletes for lengthy periods of time.

Committed athletes may have a hard time recognizing when they are pushing themselves too hard, and the line between perseverance and overdoing it can be thin. Many athletes credit their ability to push themselves mentally and physically with helping them

achieve their fitness goals and thrive as competitors. But it’s vital that athletes learn to recognize the signs that suggest they’re

exercising too much.

The USNLM notes that the following are some signs of overdoing it with an exercise routine.

• An inability to perform at your established level • Requiring longer periods of rest between workout sessions • Feeling tired • Feeling depressed • Experiencing mood swings or irritability • Difficulty sleeping • Feeling sore muscles or heavy limbs • Suffering overuse injuries such as runner’s knee, achilles tendinitis, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis • Loss of motivation • Getting more colds • Unintended weight loss • Feelings of anxiety The USNLM urges anyone experiencing these symptoms to rest

completely for between one and two weeks.

After that period of rest, the body should be fully recovered.

However, if any of these issues linger after two weeks, seek the advice of a health care provider.

A health care provider may recommend additional rest and/ or conduct a series of tests to determine if an underlying issue is causing any of the aforementioned symptoms.

Rest is as vital to an effective exercise regimen as proper technique, ensuring the body has ample time to recover and reducing the risk of overuse injuries.

There are many reasons to get in shape. Weight loss is a prime motivator, as is reversing a negative health effect, such as high cholesterol or increased diabetes risk. Routine exercise also can improve life expectancy.

WebMD says exercise keeps the body and brain healthy.

That’s why exercise should be an important component of daily life no matter one’s age.

Research published in the journal Immune Aging found that how people age is 75 percent lifestyle and only 25 percent genetics, which underscores the importance of the lifestyle choices people make.

Cardiorespiratory fitness Many health experts say that cardiorespiratory fitness may be just as valuable a metric to determine overall health as blood pressure and lipid levels. People with a high aerobic capacity can deliver oxygen to tissues and cells efficiently to fuel exercise, according to data published in 2014 in the journal Aging & Disease.

In a study involving 11,335 women, researchers compared V02 max, also

known as aerobic capacity, in women with mortality data. Women who were fit from a cardiovascular perspective had a lower death rate from all causes, irrespective of the women’s weight.

Manage stress and mood Exercise has direct stress-busting benefits that can promote longevity. The Mayo Clinic says physical activity can increase the production of endorphins, which are the body’s feel-good neurotransmitters.

In addition, exercise can imitate the effects of stress, helping the body adjust its flight or fight response accordingly, and help them cope with mildly stressful situations.

While engaged in exercise, people may forget about their problems as they are focused on the activity at hand.

Improve bone health Strength training and physical activity can stave off the effects of frailty and osteoporosis, which affects bone strength. A study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine in 2017 found that hip fractures are associated with diminished quality

of life and survival among the elderly. One in three adults aged 50 and over dies within 12 months of suffering a hip fracture, and older adults have a five- to eight-times greater risk of dying within three months following a hip fracture. Building muscle strength, balance and bone density through exercise can reduce falls and frailty, helping to prevent fracture-related health risks.

Addresses sarcopenia The health and wellness resource Healthline defines sarcopenia as the loss of muscle mass specifically related to aging. Doctors once considered this muscle loss inevitable, and it can affect stamina and lead to weakness. However, new indications suggest that exercise is the main treatment regimen for sarcopenia, particularly resistance training. This is designed to improve muscle strength and help balance hormone levels by turning protein into energy for older adults.

Benefits Of Leisure Activities Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers

behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. Members of Connetquot High School’s Helping Hands Club stay true to the group’s name, regularly dedicating themselves to various philanthropic endeavors throughout the local community. Since its inception, the club has done a plethora of good deeds, from donating backpacks filled with school supplies to local families in need, to providing holiday meals to community members, to fundraising

for those struggling due to unfortunate circumstances such as illness, death, house fires and loss of jobs.

Currently, the club is participating in “The Takeout Project,” a Long Island-based initiative that provides local food pantries with gift cards to local restaurants in an effort to feed community members in need while bolstering local businesses that may be struggling due to the pandemic. Connetquot’s

Helping Hands Club is collecting both gift cards and monetary donations to help “The Takeout Project” achieve its goal.

Tender Loving Cats to the Rescue Tender Loving Cats, a non-profit, a Long Island no-kill kitten and cat rescue run entirely by volunteers, experienced a boom in families stepping up to foster kittens and friendly adult cats over the past year due to the pandemic.

This led to many more cats and kittens coming into the adoption program from the streets and finding homes.

However, the need for foster families is ongoing.

“Fostering is fun, rewarding and saves lives,” said Marge Goldin, a volunteer for the organization.

“During ‘kitten season’ which runs April through October, Tender Loving Cats and other rescues get more requests for kitten placement than can be handled. But the number of kittens that can be saved is limited only by the number of fosters available.”

Tender Loving Cats manages all the medical needs of the cats/kittens and provides assistance and support throughout the process. Once they are old enough and socialized, Tender Loving cats uses social media to find them

forever homes. No cat or kitten is adopted before they are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations.

Goldin says that Tender Loving Cats is always in need of volunteers to assist in working 2-hour shifts in the two adoption centers that the organization runs out of two PetSmart locations in North Babylon and West Babylon.

“This past year has been especially challenging, as the number of homeless cats has risen, whether due to people losing their jobs and not being able to care for their cats anymore or moving to other locations and leaving their cats behind,” Goldin said. “We are stretched to the limit, but we are determined to save as many cats as possible. We have a motto at Tender Loving Cats that we rescue the mistreated, save the injured and love the abandoned and we try to do just that.”

Occasionally Tender Loving Cats is faced with situations where cats or kittens have serious medical challenges.

Blindness, deafness, injury, illness or special

medication needs present themselves.

Recently, as part of a widespread initiative trying to manage the cat population at Hofstra University, a volunteer took on the responsibility to foster a kitten born missing its back legs. The volunteer, Claudia Cannam, a Hofstra law student, is currently looking into getting the kitten a prosthesis. Rescues the mistreat Tender Loving Cats has a Trap-Neuter-Return program that targets the feral cat explosion on Long Island. Help for ferals is available in the form of trap rental and assistance with trapping. The rescue also can offer financial assistance to low income cat parents seeking to neuter their pets.

the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time.

Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

The Connetquot High School boys’ basketball team earned its second consecutive win on February 15th with an exciting 56-53 decision at home against William Floyd HS. The T-birds improve to 2-1 while Floyd drops to 2-2.

Senior, Jake Riegger topped the Thunderbirds with 18 points in the win.

Connetquot HS Boys’ Basketball Wins A Barn-Burner With A 56-53 Win Over William Floyd HS his first year back after a four-year hiatus, has taken this senior-laden team that went 1-17 last year to already having surpassed last year’s number of victories. As a result of the shortened season, due to the coronavirus, the T-birds are playing as many as three games per week in the abbreviated schedule.
