An Afternoon with Billy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In all the hype over our dear Buddy the Betta’s first birthday last week, another momentous occasion got lost in the shuffle – my opportunity to attend an intimate Q&A with Billy Joel at my alma mater, C.W. Post.

It was designed to give the students of the Long Island High School for the Arts an opportunity to learn from the master, one who happened to make a rather sizable donation to their school in an effort to keep it up and running for the next generation of promising performing artists.

Of course, officially, I was “covering” this event in my capacity as a journalist; however, the opportunity

to be a part of such a small audience in front of one of my idols had its own unique appeal on a personal level – at the very institution where I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree over a decade ago. While not a full-fledged concert by any means, there was “a little music” to go along with the anecdotes, making for an afternoon of memories to last a lifetime.

In the weeks since, I had occasion to peruse my college portfolio, where I came across an essay I had written on the hopes and aspirations I had for my career. “Countdown to Commencement,” it was called, covering everything from grad school to loans to the job search to that endless search for fulfillment.

As much as anyone thinks he/she has life all mapped out, it is nearly impossible to rely on a set blueprint.

Because, every now and then, life itself beckons, with all its unanticipated twists and turns.

Such was my sentiment in the Spring of 2004, and so it remains. If you had told me 12 years ago that I would be back in the Tilles Center theatre, as an editor and columnist, mere feet away from the likes of Billy Joel… well that would have fallen under the “unanticipated” category for sure. I can only imagine the thrill it was for those high school students, those with the world at their feet, endless opportunities stretched before them.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth.

Parents worried about how their kids will respond to the dentist can take the following steps to acclimate kids to dental visits to make them more comfortable during their appointments now and down the road: Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used.

Healthy Habits to Combat Stress

Few adults can imagine a life that does not include financial- or work-related stress. But there are ways to combat stress that can benefit people’s longterm health and improve their presentday quality of life.

Stress has an immediate and potentially long-term effect on the human body. Though it’s a natural response to both good and bad experiences, stress, when chronic, can produce a host of negative consequences that greatly diminish one’s quality of life.

Combatting stress can sometimes be difficult, as the causes of stress are never too far away for many adults. In its 2015 “Stress in AmericaTM: Paying With Our Health” survey, the American Psychological Association found that money is the top cause of stress for Americans. The survey was conducted on behalf of the APA by Harris Poll, which

Special Screening The Connetquot Central School District (CCSD) Steering Committee recently hosted a no-charge screening of Carolyn Jones’s documentary “The American Nurse.”

CCSD Superintendent Lynda G. Adams introduced program moderator and charge nurse Daniel R.

Haughie, welcomed over 100 students, parents and teachers, and encouraged questions for the professional panel which followed the film.

“The American Nurse” tells the inspirational story of 5 nurses with different backgrounds, experiences and specialties, capturing

their stories through photography and film.

Their unique experiences inspire audiences to think about nursing with a new appreciation for these dedicated professionals on the front lines of healthcare today.

Winter Around the World More than 80 English as a New Language (ENL) Connetquot Central School District students, 5-18 years old, and their families recently came together to share each other’s cultures with dinner and crafts at Ronkonkoma Middle

School.

Students and their families were able to enjoy food from around the world and join each other in coloring, participating in crafts, building snowmen and decorating cookies during the district’s annual

“Winter Around the World” event.

The purpose of this event was to build on the rich diversity in the Connetquot School District and help students share their cultural heritage with one another.

Mr. McGuckin explained the guide dogs are trained by volunteers to work with people who are military veterans, blind or visually impaired. The dogs help promote independence, enhanced mobility and

companionship to the visually impaired.

The Guide Dog Foundation trains volunteer handlers from all over the U.S. and Canada to work with dogs that can then become so valuable to people in need.

Suzanne also serves as a member of the Marketing Committee for District 3 of the United States Power Squadron. She has earned four Merit Marks with the United States Power Squadrons, which is based on dedication and work that has been accomplished within the Squadron.

Over 125 Squadron members attended the “Change of Watch” Meeting, along with several elected and governmental officials.

Several proclamations were also received and presented to Commander Mora. Elected officials and representatives presented Commander Mora with Proclamations, including Michael Falk, representing New York State Senator Phil Boyle; Eric Hofmaister, Representing New York State Senator; New York State Regional Director Patrick Beckley; Islip Town Clerk Olga H. Sini, Nassau County Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter, and Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer.

SPREADING CHEER - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School cheerleading team and student-athletes recently went to the Berkshire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to spread cheer during this cold winter. The students performed school cheers for the residents and assisted them in making cookie houses.

Mentor Recognized Connetquot Central School District’s Justin Paura, a senior on Connetquot High School’s basketball team, spends his time working with elementary school students when he’s not practicing on the court.

Last month, Paura spent an afternoon at Edward J. Bosi Elementary School mentoring fifth graders

as part of the “Athletes Helping Athletes” club.

The club allows high school athletes to talk to elementary school students about what to expect in middle and high school. Later that night, Paura scored 15 points in his game against Northport High School.

Connetquot Central School District partnered

with Molloy College to participate in “Athletes Helping Athletes,” making it the largest chapter of the club in Nassau and Suffolk County with 60 dedicated students taking the pledge to stay away from drugs and alcohol and sharing their experiences with the younger students.

The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has installed its officers for 2016-2017. The “Change of Watch” Meeting was on Friday, February 12th, at Greenwood Hall at 58 Greenwood Avenue in East Islip.

Suzanne Mora, JN, of Oakdale, has been reinstalled installed as the Squadron Commander as she served as the Squadron this past year – a first for the Great South Bay Power Squadron.

Guys & Dolls, Jr. Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS) theater students recently performed a major musical production of “Guys & Dolls” for the Connetquot community.

Led by Paul Foschino (Sky Masterson), Samantha Yannucci (Sarah Brown), Brooke Wexler (Miss Adelaide)

and Nicholas Rizzuto (Nathan Detroit), this gifted ensemble of actors, singers and dancers told the story of Sky Masterson, a shady gambler, who falls in love with an honest missionary. This New York City story follows Nathan Detroit as he tries to raise money for his biggest gambling payday.

He convinces Masterson to

help him which leads to his surprising romance with Sarah Brown.

With a mixture of humor, drama, singing and dancing, “Guys and Dolls” entertained the appreciative audience, which gave the cast a standing ovation at the show’s conclusion.

Model UN More than 180 Long Island high school students, representing 9 different high schools, recently attended a Model United Nations (U.N.) Conference hosted by Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School. This is the largest Model U.N. Conference Connetquot High School has ever hosted.

Student-delegates were divided into seven committees modeled after actual U.N. committees

such as, the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Health Organization (WHO), UN Human Rights Council and the Arab League.

Each committee debated current issues, drafted resolutions, plotted strategy, negotiated with supporters and adversaries as well as engaged in public speaking exercises during moderated and

unmoderated caucuses.

As preparation, students researched current global issues and resolutions, which they discussed and formulated political positions during the daylong event.

The goal of the “Model UN” program is to provide students with a better understanding of the inner working of the UN and to foster skills in diplomacy and compromise.

A number of area high school seniors will be given a break on college costs, as the Long Island credit union NEFCU kicks off its annual Making a Difference Family Scholarship program that will award up to 12 students with at least $1,000 toward a college scholarship.

The Westbury-based credit union will begin accepting applications from high school seniors February 25. The deadline for applications is April 29, with the winners announced in mid-June.

Those applying must have a four-year overall GPA of 90 or above, and have dedicated a minimum of 50 hours toward community service work and projects.

The program is open to any high school senior who is a NEFCU member or has a parent/guardian who is a member. Anyone who lives or works on Long Island can become a NEFCU member with just a $5 deposit. The application requirement includes an essay, an unofficial school transcript and documented proof of community service.

Last year, 12 area high school seniors (four from Suffolk County and eight from Nassau County) were awarded $1,000 scholarships each as part of the Making A Difference Family Scholarship program.
