Long Island’s Got Talent Attention Long Island students! Can you carry a tune?Is a musical instrument your specialty?

If so, get your audition DVD or YouTube video submitted now for Long Island’s Got Talent 2017, hosted by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO).

Created by WMHO’s Youth Corps, the event gives Long Island students the opportunity to show off their talents this spring.

It’s open to students 10-17

years of age in Nassau or Suffolk County who must still be in high school at the time awards are given in November 2017. Talent must be non-professional vocal or musical instrument performances.

The entry deadline is March 17th and there is a $25 entry fee.

Those who are contacted after submitting their audition will be asked to perform at the first round performance on April 7th at 6:30 p.m. at

WMHO’s Educational & Cultural Center, 97P Main Street in the Stony Brook Village Center. Finalists chosen will also have the opportunity to perform at WMHO’s Sunday Summer Concerts series in July and August and finals will take place on November 3rd, 2017 when the winners will be chosen.

During the three day event, Girl Scouts will host booth sales throughout Nassau County and use digital and social media

skills to spread the word about where to buy Girl Scout Cookies®. Over the past century, Troops have learned five valuable skills needed in both life and business: goal setting, decision making, money management, business ethics, and people skills.

Designed by Girl Scouts of the USA, National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend serves to encourage members throughout the

And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless.

Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house.

I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard.

So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life

should be born there as well.

I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up.

It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant.

I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document.

In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www.

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School C-Quest advisors Lisa Manzo and Kevin Keane recently welcomed Mrs. Janet Steiner to the school as an opportunity for the fourth- and fifth-grade students to learn about Chinese culture.

As an introduction to traditional Chinese customs, she brought

with her a hand-made “dragon’s head” which is used in traditional New Year celebrations. Due to her extensive knowledge of facts surrounding China, Steiner welcomed questions from C-Quest students about typical foods, forms of entertainment and educational opportunities for children.

Connetquot Central School District’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of the district’s fourth- and fifth-grade students. Based at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district.

Narcan Training Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr. invited Erik Zalewski (MS, EMT-CC) to meet with district teachers on February 8th.

Zalewski is a veteran paramedic affiliated with the Emergency Care & Safety Institute, National Safety Council and the American Heart Association.

Felicio invited Zalewski to work with district educators on

the use of Narcan, which is used to reverse opioid overdoses.

Teachers were taught the symptoms and causes of opioid overdoses, and the proper use of Narcan, or Naloxone, to revive individuals in drug distress.

“I would like to thank our teachers for attending the CTA sponsored Narcan training today” said Felicio “If the need ever arises, Connetquot teachers will have the knowledge and

experience that could save a life. I’m proud to say that this is another example of how district educators prepare themselves, to protect the residents of our community.”

Felicio thanked the teachers, and Erik Zalewski for taking part is such an important training session.

Zalewski is also a high school science teacher, and has authored numerous articles on managing medical emergencies.

“We are so touched to be selected for the first time to receive these beautiful Valentine’s Day boxes decorated by the elementary school children and made for other children,” said Alexander Roberts, Executive Director of CHI. “It’s a wonderful way to learn about giving back.

The children living in our emergency housing will have a thoughtful gift to enjoy this Valentine’s Day.” The Valentine Box Project originated in the Sachem School District.

Students at various grade levels decorate and fill boxes with new items and then donate them to local shelters and not-for-profits to link with a child who matches their age level.

Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them.

The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and inhome support services.

Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities.

4. Take a bath before bedtime.

Over 100 Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students from the school’s Healthcare Classes came together recently for an anticyberbully workshop.

Cyberbullying remains a hot topic since recent reports claim that 43% of teenagers have been bullied online over the past year.

These statistics prompted students and staff to view the movie, Cyberbully, and reflect on how the issue effects them in their everyday digital lives. Students referred to a specially created Movie Viewing Guide as they watched the video, which was followed by a discussion led by the school’s social worker, Nancy Tuck. The students were given a list of resources and information was distributed about cyber bullying, its effects on others and what to do if you are a victim.

“The film sparked conversation among our students,” said Barry Tech Assistant Principal Dr. William Poll. “Students

talked about ways to handle cyberbullying situations, while our Social Worker provided resources and strategies for this challenge that students face every day.”

Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide teacher Dr. Michelle Fattore was instrumental in bringing the program to the school.

“I think it’s important to remind students of their responsibility when they post anything on the internet,” said Dr. Fattore.

“They need to know the ramifications of posting negative comments, as well as the resources available to them if they become a victim of cyberbullying.”

Dr. Poll opened the session by reminding the students that, “Barry Tech is a bully-free zone and the healthcare classes are passionate about stomping out bullying.”

The workshop launched a school-wide campaign.

“Barry Tech is a safe environment where I feel safe and I can express myself,” said Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide and Rehabilitation Medicine student Veronica Scruggs from the Bethpage UFSD. Fellow Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide and Rehabilitation Medicine students agree: “Barry Tech is a bully-free zone, because you meet people you have never met before.

This allows you to have a fresh start and create a new community for yourself,” said Samantha Zizzo, Bethpage UFSD. Anisha Sander, a Freeport UFSD student sums it up, “Without love, there is no family in Barry Tech. But with love, Barry Tech is my safe haven.”

Identity Thieves Can Steal Your Financial Stability (NAPSI)—All your hard work to become financially stable can unravel if you become a victim of identity theft.

Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information such as your Social Security number, birth date or mother’s maiden name.

Many people don’t know they’ve been victimized until a collection agency comes knocking on their door.

Identity theft is a growing problem but there are steps you can take to prevent it.

• Never give out personal information over the phone, on the Internet or through the mail unless you initiate the transaction or know whom you’re dealing with.

• Don’t reveal any personal information before you find out how it will be used and shared with others. When someone requests your

Social Security number, ask if you can provide alternate information. At medical offices, use an identifier that is not your Social Security number.

• Ensure the passwords to your credit card, bank, phone and all other online accounts aren’t easily available and can’t easily be guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your birth date, digits in your Social Security number or your mother’s maiden name.

Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts.

• Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t

retrieve them.

• Protect your mail. Keep your eyes open for bills and statements. If you think one of your statements is missing, quickly call that company to let it know.

Take outgoing mail to a postal mailbox or the post office. If your mail suddenly stops, go to the post office. Thieves sometimes submit change of address forms to divert mail to their address.

• Check your bank and credit card account activity promptly upon receipt of a written statement.

If you see any problems, immediately report them to your financial institution. The Federal Trade Commission offers guidance on immediate steps to take to limit the harm.
