The college’s remote production van is equipped with state-of the-art Newtek Tricaster 860 production systems and a Newtek 3Play 425 video record and playback system.

The student tournament webcast was watched last year by an international audience and by viewers state-wide.

This year’s broadcast will be available from the Suffolk County Community College homepage at www. sunysuffolk.edu during the tournament weekend.

In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York.

FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015 semester.

“FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville.

“HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven

recruitment initiatives throughout the state.

We urge all interested students to sign up, and apply for this tuition reimbursement program before the February 20th deadline.”

Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies.

There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP student-volunteer firefighter can pursue either on a full-time or part-time basis. Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State

College.

FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters.

Eligible studentvolunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they complete their course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence. Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ options.

Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community.

MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting.

Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers.

On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension.

There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture.

This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it.

We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

NEW INDUCTEES - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) recently inducted 71 students into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). NJHS Advisor Lori Senia presented the new members with their certificates and congratulated each new member of this prestigious society. NJHS honors the OBMS students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character.

Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School student, Jarell Cowell, recently celebrated his 1,000th career point in basketball before a home game. Newfield High School basketball alumni joined fellow students, school officials and the only other athlete to achieve this milestone, class of 1997 graduate Keith Bogad; at a pregame ceremony honoring Cowell.

“We continue to be

extremely proud and impressed of Jarell’s athletic talent,” said Superintendent Dr. Roberta Gerold. “It is always exciting to be a part of district history and we are equally excited to see all the great things Jarell will accomplish after graduation.”

Senior Jarell Cowell is the only male athlete to reach the 1,000th point milestone in nearly 20 years, and is only the second male athlete in the

district’s history to do so.

He received a basketball engraved to symbolize “1,000 points” and a second basketball will be kept in the school’s trophy case. Cowell plans to play college basketball in the fall, but has not yet chosen a college team.

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes.

It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on.

Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately.

LICADD Named A Finalist LICADD has been named a Finalist in the Rising Star category in The 3rd Annual Long Island Imagine Awards.

The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. Last year’s event attracted over 300 attendees from the nonprofit and business communities and an even larger crowd is expected this year.

Winners will be

announced LIVE at the awards gala at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Tuesday, May 5th.

On Wednesday, February 4th, Longwood High School student-athlete Isaiah White officially declared his intention to attend Stony Brook University this fall by signing his National Letter of Intent to play football for the Seawolves.

Isaiah received the New York State Defensive Player of the Year Award and was named the 2014 Hansen Award winner and Cipp Award winner. Isaiah was selected to the USA Today All-American Team, MSG

All-Metro (NY-NJ-CT) Team, NYSSWA All-State 1st Team, Newsday AllLong Island, All-County, All-Division and the Division I Most Valuable Player.

“Isaiah is a great football player and person,” said Longwood Coach Jeff Cipp.

“He is very humble, and is the type of person that you hope to have each year on your team, both as a leader and role model.”

While Isaiah’s athletic accomplishments are impressive, he is also a

dedicated student and community member.

He is an avid reader to elementary students through the Read Across America program and serves as a juror and attorney in Youth Court.

Isaiah also works as a youth football coach where he inspires younger athletes and encourages them to always keep academics as their top priority.

Isaiah plans to study criminal justice and law enforcement.

Committing To Scholarships Two student athletes, Timothy Hofmann and Greg Marino, from Middle Country Central School District’s Centereach High School signed letters of intent to play with college sports teams in the fall.

Hofmann, a senior member of the men’s varsity soccer team, will commit to Dowling College in Oakdale, and Marino, a senior member of the men’s varsity baseball team, will commit to Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY. Parents, coaches and Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Roberta Gerold watched as the athletes committed to their respective schools.

“We encourage our students to take the same diligence they put towards their schoolwork and equally apply it to their extra-curricular activities,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “We are very proud of Timothy and Greg for doing exactly that and we look forward to seeing all they achieve in college - on and off the field.”

Timothy Hofmann has been a member of

the varsity men’s soccer team during all four years at Centereach High School, and was named the team’s captain for three out of those four years. He was selected as an All-Conference player in tenth grade, and came back from ACL surgery his junior year to be named an all-conference player, an all-county player and the team’s Most Valuable Player (MVP.) Greg Marino will enter his final season after being named allleague and team MVP his junior year.

COMMITTING TO SCHOLARSHIPS - Middle Country Central School District’s Centereach High School Seniors Gregory Marino and Timothy Hofmann signed letters of intent to play baseball and soccer at Stonybrook University and Dowling College, respectively in the presence of Varsity Soccer Coach Jonathon Galfano, Director of Athletics Joseph Mercado, Principal Tom Bell and Varsity Baseball Coach Michael Herrschaft.

ASTROSAT HONOREES - At the January 8th Town Board Meeting, Councilwomen Connie Kepert and Jane Bonner presented Certificates of Congratulations to Longwood High School juniors Ruojing (Jenny) Fang and Yunjie (Jack) Su for winning the 2014 ASE AstroSat Challenge. The Longwood High School Climate Group, under the guidance of Advanced Science Research teacher Dr. Lucinda Hemmick, was selected as one of only 15 teams nationwide to participate in the challenge. As winners of the 2014 competition, Jenny and Jack will program satellite sensors to collect scientific data, such as cloud signatures and surface temperatures of the earth over a one week period. The data collected will be used to provide important new information about climate change.

Fighting Cancer

Students at Jericho Elementary School in the Middle Country Central School District, are currently holding a Matha-Thon to raise vital funds for the children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Participating students complete activities in a Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics (CCLS) workbook in exchange for donations.

The Math-a-Thon will foster mathematics education while teaching students a lesson in giving back to those in need.

“The Math-a-Thon is a one of a kind educational experience we as a district are proud to share with

our students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold.

“Students will begin to understand lessons of philanthropy while participating in extracurricular mathematic activities.”

Friends and family will sponsor and support participating students for every activity they complete in their math workbooks. The program encourages students to earn additional practice in mathematics in order to earn more donations.

Students also receive prizes after reaching a certain fundraising goal and many of those students have chosen to

donate those prizes back to patients at St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The Jericho Elementary School already collected over $6,000 after implementing an online program where sponsors can send donations directly through the St. Jude Children’s Hospital website. All donations are sent directly to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital to benefit a sick child and their family.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) announced the 28th Anniversary Angel Ball Honoree Humanitarian Award is Tara E. Conner, former Miss USA. Tara Conner is a Television Personality and Recovery Advocate.

Through her work, she shares her experience, strength and hope with audiences throughout the United States. Conner was crowned Miss USA in 2006. During December of that year, she entered the Caron Treatment Center and completed 30 days of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. She has since celebrated 8 years of sobriety.

Tara hopes to raise awareness that addiction is a disease and that many people go on to lead a healthy, productive life in recovery. She especially wants educators, families and professionals to know that sobriety at an early age is achievable and that it greatly enhances life’s possibilities. Miss Conner states, “It’s so important to understand that addiction is a family disease,” said Conner.

“I experienced this firsthand within my own family. But I’ve also learned that through treatment and recovery you can break the cycle.”

LICADD is working feverishly to put a stop to the increase in addiction and the tragedies that result from it. Children and families are being devastated and LICADD offers a solution with preventive education and support services to help break the cycle.

Foley has been teaching in the District for the past 16 years. He currently teaches chemistry, Earth science and forensic science at the high school.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo launched the New York State Master Teacher Program (NYSMTP) to respond to the call to strengthen our nation’s K-12 STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – education. In partnership with The State University of New York and Math for America, the program creates a state-wide network of the highest performing STEM teachers that are dedicated to sharing expertise with peers and to attracting the brightest students to careers in STEM. Educators state-wide

apply for and are accepted into the Master Teachers Program based upon their classroom teaching skills as well as on their commitment to enhanced professional development in three key areas: Knowledge of content: Master Teachers have been exposed to and have grappled with ideas that are central to their discipline at advanced levels. Like any STEM professionals, however, they view their knowledge as incomplete.

Knowledge of pedagogy: Master Teachers have a deep understanding of professional knowledge for teaching and strive to incorporate successful practices in their work.

They continually evaluate, refine and adapt their practice to better meet the needs of their students.

Knowledge of students: Master Teachers possess a deep knowledge of their students’ neighborhoods, cultures and values. They see a student’s family and community as resources in their efforts to inspire them to study STEM disciplines.

As a Master Teacher, Foley will receive a stipend and will be required to engage in professional development activities in addition to his regular school responsibilities over the next four years.

He will meet regularly

(evenings and weekends) to participate in activities that lead to individual and collective professional growth with other Master Teachers. He will have opportunities to take mini-courses – addressing such topics as student research and emerging STEM subjects such as climate change and hydrofracturing – as well as to engage in leadership workshops to better contribute to departmental discussions and to mentor early career and pre-service teachers. He also will participate in the Empire State STEM Learning Network through regional STEM hubs, partnering with local businesses and agencies to better prepare students for STEM careers.

“We want the best possible teachers in every New York classroom educating our children. As part of the state’s work to transform our education system and to put students first, we are committed to investing in great teachers to educate our students and to create a highly-trained workforce to drive our future economy,” stated Governor Cuomo. “This program will reward those teachers who work harder to make the difference and whose students perform better as a result.”

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE - Middle Country Central School District students recently interacted with live examples from the mammal, bird and reptile families when Sweet Briar Nature Center came to visit. Pre-kindergarten students learned the characteristics of each animal and what makes each wildlife family unique. The program titled “Animal Interviews” is specially designed for Pre-K, Kindergarten and first grade students and allows them to get up close and personal with snakes, turtles, birds and other wildlife.

Volunteers Needed Family & Children’s Association, Long Island’s leading human care agency is seeking volunteers for its new Friendly Visitors program set to begin in May. Family & Children’s Association serves nearly 9,000 seniors each year providing case management, financial counseling, health insurance counseling and other support services.

They will provide training and on-going support to volunteers enabling them to provide companionship

and once-a-week visitation to a local, homebound senior. Volunteers should be able to drive to various locations within Nassau County and commit to one hour per week of socialization with their senior.

According to Family & Children’s Association President/CEO Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., “The Friendly Visitor program will add a much-needed socialization component to our cadre of services devoted to Long Island’s seniors. We assist many

seniors’ goals of living independently in their homes and this program will support them in that effort.”

STAR Deadline Angie Carpenter, Suffolk County Treasurer, reminds all new property owners that the deadline to apply for your BASIC School Tax Relief (STAR) exemption is March 1st, 2015, but because the first is a Sunday, it is extended to Monday, March 2nd, 2015.

“If you previously had the exemption on a prior residence, you must apply

for this exemption with your assessor on your new property,” cautions Treasurer Carpenter.

“However, all residents who currently still reside in their same place of residence as prior years and have reapplied with the State Department of Taxation and Finance do not need to do anything at this time,” states Carpenter.

Applications must be submitted to the town assessor where your primary residence is located. BASIC STAR is available to all New York residents whose combined total adjusted gross income does not exceed $500,000 regardless of age. This exemption may only be applied to your primary residence.

Any senior receiving or now eligible for the ENHANCED STAR exemption must also submit their completed applications to your local assessor by March 2nd, 2015. To be eligible for the ENHANCED STAR exemption, the property must be your primary residence, you must turn 65 in the year that the exemption will apply

and have an income of $81,900 or less. If the property is jointly owned, only one resident must be 65 by the indicated time.

If you believe you may qualify for other property tax exemptions, please contact the town assessor for further information or call the Treasurer’s Office at 631.852.1500 for exemption brochures.
