The Birthday Betta By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here! It’s finally arrived!

The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come…

Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well.

There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents!

What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete

with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first.

I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet.

Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate…

Tiny brain, big dreams.

The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with.

I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small

shrimp or a snail to keep me company, and maybe vacuum my bowl now and then. Those long hours spent waiting for my Human to return home each day are awfully boring.

There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another.

Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.)

I feel the players’ disgusting, slimy, goopy hands on me.

The losing team has a bulldog face on.

The game is over.

King Kullen Raises Funds

King Kullen, America’s First Supermarket, recently came to the aid of Long Islanders in need by hosting a “Check Out Hunger” campaign in its stores, raising $35,000.

The money was donated to the Long Island Cares/ Harry Chapin Food Bank, which has been serving the hungry on Long Island since 1980.

King Kullen CoPresident Brian C. Cullen stated, “King Kullen has been a longtime supporter of the Long Island Cares/ Harry Chapin Food Bank.

We are pleased to partner with our customers who contributed to ‘Check Out Hunger’ to assist Long Island Cares in its mission to provide emergency food where and when it is needed. Helping those in

need in the communities we serve is a tradition that dates back to my grandfather, Michael J. Cullen, who founded King Kullen in 1930.”

In 1997, King Kullen was the first supermarket chain to participate in the annual “Check Out Hunger” campaign, a unique partnership between Long Island Cares and the shopping community in which customers can make a donation with a coupon when checking out at the supermarket register.

This year’s campaign ran from October through December 31st, 2015.

One hundred percent of all donations go to Long Island Cares.

Two simple things can go a long way toward

ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly.

Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers.

“Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the opposite

hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.”

Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones in preventing the spread of infection in a health care setting. Even if the caregiver says they washed their hands right before coming into the room, don’t feel embarrassed to ask them to do it again in front of you.

READING PEP RALLY - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students recently attended a reading-themed pep rally by Hip Pickles, a drumming entertainment group with engaging, high-energy songs about reading. Students had the opportunity to play drums, share why they enjoy reading and sing along with the Hip Pickles during a school-wide assembly. This program was part of a District initiative to promote reading as part of the district’s dedication to providing students with a high-quality education.

Saving the Planet Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School 5th grade “Proactive Recycling Rangers,” 9-10 years old, have been working on a project to learn more about their environment, and what they can do to protect it.

They recently shared

their new knowledge with 1st grade peers, demonstrating how to recycle plastic and papers and explaining how recycling helps protect the planet for the future.

The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) recently awarded

a financial grant to help students and staff to recycle at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School.

“The Proactive Recycling Rangers” will help to collect materials from participating classrooms and sort them in the recycling center.

Prevention Program (DPP). The program supports moderate behavioral changes and has proven to reduce risk in those who are at risk for type 2 diabetes.

DPP is based on a research study led by the National Institutes of Health. The study

showed that with intensive counseling and motivational support, participants were able to make behavioral changes, reducing their risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes by 58 percent.

Lifestyle changes worked particularly well for participants aged 60 and

Wilderness Training Training for emergencies while hiking in the woods was offered by the Suffolk County Council (Boy Scouts of America)’s High Adventure Training team on Saturday, January 30th, at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. Seven local adult Scouting volunteers and one Boy Scout participated in the “Wilderness First Aid Training” course.

“Wilderness and Remote First Aid” is supported by American Red Cross and the Boy Scouts of America.

Two trained Leaders are required for their Scout Troop or Venture Crew to participate in a high adventure camping and/or hiking trip.

This training is mandatory for trips where normal support systems would cause delayed care of fractures, sprains, wounds and illnesses.

In addition, the more commonly experienced safety concerns, safety issues, and first aid were dealt with during the

training session.

The “Wilderness First Aid Training” course was instructed by High Adventure Committee member John Nicolellis and members of the course were Assistant Scoutmaster Richard Conzo, Assistant Scoutmaster Kevin Michaels, Assistant Scoutmaster Kevin Lawn and Scouting Dad Tom Bucci all of Troop 205 (Great River), Life Scout Kieran Monaghan, Assistant Scoutmaster Michael

Monaghan, Scoutmaster Brian Heinrichs all of Troop 433 (Middle Island), and Assistant Scoutmaster Anne Nakamoto Troop 427 (Setauket). They each received a certificate of qualification and a trained patch along with a an instruction book.
