Sagamore, the addition of the news show project into the class curriculum engages students in a unique way. With help from librarian Sandy Bucher, students utilize library resources to research the topics they will be reporting on. While gaining knowledge on ancient civilizations, the students also explore many aspects of being part of a news production. Students write and edit scripts, conduct interviews and then deliver the prepared newscast in front of a green screen with the help of technology integration specialist Carrie McGuire. The green screen was used to add realistic settings behind the student news anchors as their segments were recorded. “This project gives students a much greater experience than what they learn from the textbook alone,” Rubin-Frank said. “Students take the information they obtain through research and bring it to life.”

helpful insight from two prominent local news professionals. Students were visited by Jamie Stuart, Emmy-winning News 12 Long Island sports anchor and reporter, and Joe Cioffi, meteorologist on FiOS1 News and WPIX-TV Channel 11, for two separate assembly presentations. Beginning with an assembly for all the sixthgrade students, Stuart described his job as a sports anchor and reporter and how he reached the position he holds today. He encouraged students to always work hard and take the time to approach problems in a constructive way. Following the assembly, Stuart worked with small groups from Jessica Rubin-Frank’s class, offering advice on how to effectively deliver their newscast and how to write and edit their scripts. During a separate assembly presentation, Cioffi spoke with students about the basics of meteorology and elements of forecast maps. Demonstrating his expertise in meteorology, Cioffi identified an area of incoming rain, announcing that it should begin any minute. Students were astonished when the rain began outside shortly after. Continuing the visit, Cioffi coached students in front of the green screen as they worked on delivering their ancient weather reports. In its first year at

these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. The Gala will include dinner, a unique art auction, music by the band X-Sessions and a possible Skype call with the children at their orphanage in Meru. Contact Kevin Mann to purchase your tickets now ($200/person) and be a part of something that truly matters!

For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

Middle Country Reads

Middle Country Reads, a project of Middle Country Public Library and Middle Country Central School District, celebrates reading as a shared community event. This year’s selection,  Faithful  by bestselling author Alice Hoffman, explores the ways kindness and perseverance can transform and redeem those touched by tragedy and guilt.  Alice Hoffman will visit the Middle Country Public Library on Tuesday, March 27th to speak about her work and life, followed by a book signing.  For more information about  Middle Country Reads  contact Lori Abbatepaolo at 631.585.9393, ext. 295. Concrete Concrete was invented by the Ancient Romans.

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Sleep Better, Stress Less (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday

stress. “When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress

and getting a good night’s rest start with evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition,

agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements, exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to

help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other

supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep. 3. Evaluate your mattress--consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older.

Showing Support The Connetquot Central School District Board of Education honored members of the Ronkonkoma Middle School staff during its January 23rd meeting for their efforts in raising $3,000 toward the ALS Ride for Life Organization and earning a Gold Participant status for doing so. Ronkonkoma Middle School hosted several

fundraisers including a RampShot tournament, a car wash organized by the school’s National Junior Honor Society and other initiatives spearheaded by Student Council. The community participated in many activities and the school received donations from a local 7-Eleven. ALS Ride for Life was founded 21 years ago in hopes of combatting

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, along with providing funding toward those diagnosed with the disease. To date, the organization has raised more than $7 million toward funding ALS research and treatments.

Digging Deep Each third-grade class at Lynwood listened to important facts about the aquifer system on Long Island – including the different components of the system – and how homes are supplied with clean water. A demonstration using red dye showed students how easy harmful

chemicals can leach through the ground into the water supply and create unsafe drinking water. Throughout the presentation, students asked questions and discussed ways to limit pollution in their everyday lives.

BRINGING SHREK TO LIFE - The Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School auditorium was transformed into a real-life fairytale world as the drama club members performed scenes from “Shrek The Musical Jr.,” which premiered for the community on February 2nd. A special celebration of student accomplishment spread throughout the halls of Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District, as students revisited their teachers and classmates from last school year and shared in each other’s collective

accomplishments as part of a Leadership Notebook Reunion project. The Leadership Notebook acts as a tool for students to track their progress as they continue through their education at Merrimac. Students utilize the notebook to graph test results, collect

special recognitions, track leadership roles and set academic goals. At Merrimac, the Leadership Notebook also creates motivation for student participation in service-learning projects, such as the Pet Education Project organized by two students in October.

Library Research Fourth-grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently worked on a fun and interactive research project with assistance from Annamarie Tongue, the school’s library media specialist. In the library, Liz Whitson’s fourth-graders worked on an author

study project alongside Mrs. Tongue to research one popular children’s author, including the likes of Mo Willems, Jan Brett, Cynthia Rylant, Steven Kellogg, Kevin Henkes and Tomie dePaola. As part of the project, the students visited the authors’ websites, read their books and made posters about their chosen individual

over a period of several weeks of research in the library. As a culminating activity, each fourth-grader read a book by their chosen author to a second-grade student in Dana Keyes’ class. Afterward, the new “reading friends” shared interesting facts they discovered about their SHARING ACCOMPLISHMENTS - Merrimac Elementary School students author. gathered to share their recent accomplishments with classmates from the previous year. All Kids Fair Each year, the All Kids Fair brings fun and different reasons for kids and their families to attend their annual event. The April 29th All Kids Fair will continue in this tradition. QuackerJack, the Long Island Ducks’ mascot, will visit to the delight of children across Long Island. In addition, the lovely Alexa Cox, Miss Long Island Teen 2018, will be available for a meetand-greet. The All Kids Fair is a Long Island “happening” each spring. Since moving to its larger venue, the Hilton Long Island/ Huntington (also known as the Huntington Hilton), the Fair has been able to accommodate a bounce house, petting zoo, and additional vendors and classes, which was enjoyed by 2,500 people this past April. Children will enjoy a large number of additional activities and “freebies,”

including face painting, photo booth, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, train tables, water ice samples, and an 8 1/2 foot snake and other animals to touch. Admission is $5 per person and free for ages 2 and younger and includes everything listed. Ever year the fun-filled All Kids Fair offers exciting educational and health activities to interest kids and their families. The Fair offers choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. Over 80 exhibitor spaces and many classes provide valuable information. Exhibitors include schools, camps, after school activities, birthday party ideas, and college planning. Some of the many classes that children can share with their parents and grandparents are drama, robots and a Boomers! Birthday Bash. Ganimet Brija of Coram,

who attended the event in 2017, enthusiastically shared “My son had a blast, and everyone was so helpful and friendly.” Noshina Amhad of Valley Stream added, “I really love this event…already waiting for [the] next event.” Attendees who like to “pay forward” to charitable groups are encouraged to bring used and new books and money for donation to The Book Fairies, who will share them with children in need. Those who do will receive raffle tickets to win a variety of donated prizes. Sponsors to date are Long Island Parent Magazine, Your Local Kids Source, Super Smiles Pediatric and Family Dentistry, Clowns. com, Redfin and Macaroni Kid. Catch Your Dreams

Heading to LI Championship The FIRST® Tech Challenge season – dubbed FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented by Qualcomm) – will culminate this weekend with the SBPLI Long Island Championship tournament. Presented locally by School-Business Partnerships of Long

Island, Inc. (SBPLI), FIRST® Tech Challenge inspires students age 12 to 18 to pursue an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Twenty-four teams (noted below) from across Long Island will compete in the event at Smithtown

High School West on Sunday, February 11th. The participating teams earned the opportunity to compete during one of five regional qualifying tournaments that took place at Lynbrook, Center Moriches and Sewanhaka High Schools throughout the month of January.

Working alongside adult mentors, more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries have spent the last several months designing, building, programming and operating robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season,

FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world were asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponent-colored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking

Teams work to score points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks, during 150 seconds of game play, which includes autonomous and drivercontrolled periods. Three teams from the FIRST Long Island Championship will go on to the SuperRegional Championship Tournament “East” in

Scranton, Pennsylvania, March 16th-18th, 2018. Teams at the SuperRegional will compete for the opportunity to advance to the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship in Detroit, April 25th-28th, 2018. “One hundred fifteen local teams competed at regional tournaments this season for an opportunity to participate in the SBPLI Long Island Championship,” says Janet Anderson, Program

Director and SBPLI/ FIRST Long Island representative. “FIRST Tech Challenge has grown into a powerful program for students across Long Island, and we are excited to see which teams will continue on to the SuperRegional in Scranton as representatives of Long Island’s STEM talent.” For more information on SBPLI or FIRST Tech Challenge, please visit www.sbpli-lifirst.org.
