Rep. Zeldin Reintroduces Bipartisan Bill to Permanently Extend Housing Grant Program for Low-Income Veterans Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) reintroduced the Supporting Veteran Families in Need Act (H.R. 492), which is cosponsored

by Representatives Tom Suozzi (D, NY-3) and Elise Stefanik (R, NY-21), to make permanent the Supportive Services Veteran Families (SSVF) program.

This program provides grants to nonprofit groups and consumer cooperatives that aid veterans with services such as case management, helps obtain and coordinate benefits, and provides temporary financial assistance.

The grant program is required to be reauthorized every 5 years and currently expires at the

end of the 2021 Fiscal Year.

“The SSVF program is fundamental to our efforts to end veteran homelessness as it enables organizations across the country to provide shelter and essential services to members of the veteran community in need,” said Congressman Zeldin.

“Extending

these grants affirms our commitment to ending veteran homelessness across the country and preserves the important programs that so many of our veterans rely upon. Ensuring our homeless veterans have shelter and a safe place to live should never be a partisan issue.”

The inventive and patronfocused design of the newly renovated Middle Country Public Library Selden building has earned the distinction of the Long Island chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The work of Bermello Ajamil & Partners has been recognized with the special projects award.

When presenting the selection, the AIA cited that reinvention and innovation breed longevity and in the case of this energetic library addition and reconfiguration, contemporary needs and an expansive vision for the future are creatively fulfilled.

The design team was tasked with introducing a programcentric operational model

with an emphasis placed on providing unique experiences for children, young adult and adult patrons.

“We are thrilled that our library and talented firm of architects have been bestowed this distinguished award,” stated Library Director Sophia Serlis-McPhillips.

“Throughout this process our directive was to provide our

patrons with spaces that were esthetically and physically comfortable to connect, learn and grow; as well as create an efficient and user-friendly environment that supported their needs and goals.”

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers.

No Coronavirus Copays for Veterans Act Introduced Representatives Lee Zeldin (R, NY-01), Lauren Underwood (D, IL-14), Julia Brownley (D, CA-26), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R, PA-01) introduced bipartisan legislation to eliminate cost barriers to COVID-19 vaccinations for veterans. The No Coronavirus Copays for Veterans Act ensures that veterans who receive health care from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) are not liable for out-of-pocket costs for qualifying coronavirus preventive services, like COVID-19 vaccines.

Companion legislation, led in the Senate by Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), will be introduced in the coming weeks.

In March 2020, Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which waived copays for qualifying items, services, or immunizations intended to prevent or mitigate coronavirus for Medicare beneficiaries and privately insured individuals. However, the CARES Act did not extend these protections to

veterans receiving VHA care. The No Coronavirus Copays for Veterans Act extends these protections to those receiving VHA care and ensures they are equally protected.

“Our nation’s brave servicemembers have earned nothing but the highest quality care, and as we all work to finish the fight against coronavirus, ensuring they receive the treatment they need to battle this novel outbreak is critical,” said Congressman Zeldin. “I’m proud to work alongside my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure our veterans are not left behind during these ever-changing times and that they receive the benefits they have earned.”

“Veterans sacrificed so much to protect our country, and we must honor their service by always making sure they have the care they’ve earned and deserve. As our nation continues to face the coronavirus pandemic, it’s critical that veterans never be assessed an out-of-pocket

expense for a COVID-19 vaccine,” said Congresswoman Underwood. “I’m introducing the bipartisan No Coronavirus Copays for Veterans Act to ensure that veterans can protect themselves against COVID-19 without facing any financial barriers.”
