Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS) Principal Ms. Suzanne Bailey and district STEM Chairperson Dr. Mary Loesing recently welcomed Suffolk County Police Officers Sheridan and Monaco to the campus to demonstrate robotics tools they use in investigations.

The officers showed the

Robotics Club three robots they use to search for explosives and minimize the danger of injuries to officers and civilians alike.

Students were able to use a remote control to operate one of the robots, manipulating its robotic arm to grasp and rotate a door handle.

The purpose of this event was to enable students interested in a

The OBMS Robotics Team competes regionally and nationally, including in the annual FIRST Lego Robotics Competition.

Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School C-Quest 5th graders recently invited local author and Connetquot High School Class of 1988 graduate Patrice Domozych to talk about her books, her craft and to help students develop their writing skills.

During her presentation, Domozych spoke about her new book, “Hope is

Here to Stay,” which tells the story of 12 year old Lauren Loose’s battle with pediatric cancer and Lauren’s efforts to help others fighting the same illness.

Using drawings, a slide show and her book, Patrice talked about Lauren and the other children who face serious challenges in their lives. She also talked about Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation, which

provides financial and emotional support for families whose children are affected by pediatric cancer.

More than $800,000 has been raised toward the goal of finding a cure for the disease.

More than 150 Connetquot Central School District K-12 grade students were joined by parents and community members for an exhilarating zombiethemed 5K run/walk to help raise money for the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC). Utilizing a series of challenging obstacle courses, the indoor fundraising event featured the “living” team, all wearing flags,

competing against the “zombie” team which tried to obtain the flags. During the race, the individuals who have lost all their flags got ZOMBIFIED! The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) is a non-profit organization which provides financial grants to teachers and district schools to purchase equipment and supplies, support special assemblies and training which directly

benefits the students of the Connetquot school district.

Since its inception, the CFAC has awarded well over $120,000 in support of school district efforts to enhance the educational opportunities for Connetquot’s children.

Over 99% of the funds raised by the CFAC are returned directly for the benefit of the students of the Connetquot Central School District.

Connetquot Central School District’s (CCSD) Board of Education recently recognized local District teachers for their outstanding achievements in education.

On behalf of the trustees, and the community, CCSD Superintendent Mrs. Lynda G. Adams recognized recipients of Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) financial grants. The CFAC provides financial support for equipment and programs that benefit district students.

When the game starts, our team gets the ball first.

My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me.

They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground.

I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line.

I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist.

The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in.

You could see the bright orange color of the ball.

It went in and made a swooshing noise.

The whole crowd cheered.

Pope Francis summed up the Church’s commitment to education when he said, “Our generation will show that it can rise to the promise found in each young person….

This means that we have to create the material and spiritual conditions for their full development; to give them a solid basis on which to build their lives; to guarantee their safety and their education to be everything they can be…”

Today, the “material and spiritual conditions” the Pope referred to are embodied in 47 beautiful elementary schools here on Long Island. Each school provides the safety and nurturing atmosphere that assures children they matter, that they are loved, and all of the schools strive to work with every student to help them achieve all they are capable of achieving. Yet some parents who desire the extraordinary results of a Catholic education still hesitate because of concerns about costs.

Families who would like to consider a Catholic education are encouraged to visit a school during

Catholic Schools Week where they will discover that the Church and the schools are as interested in making their Catholic school dream come true as they are. On your visit, you will discover that tuition is actually quite reasonable and that there are multi-child discounts and other incentives to further reduce that cost. You will also discover that many Parishes and schools have scholarships and grants available to help offset the cost of tuition, and that there is a foundation on Long Island that raises money specifically to help families that desire a Catholic education but cannot afford it. That foundation is called the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation.

The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation was established in September 2005 as a tax-exempt, non-forprofit public charity with the purpose of ‘ensuring the excellence as well as the continuance of Catholic elementary schools on Long Island by increasing awareness and by providing scholarship and program funding for the needs of students and

schools. Business leader and philanthropist Lewis S. Ranieri was appointed

by Bishop Murphy to chair the foundation. As chairman, Mr. Ranieri put together a prominent board of professionals, business leaders and diocesan administration with the goal of raising money from individual and corporate donors and providing tuition assistance for deserving families and students.

Over the past ten years, the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation has served the Long Island community by providing parents with the opportunity to choose the education that best fits the needs of their children without the worry of financial constraint.

With generous support from private and corporate donors, the Foundation has proudly served over 17,000 students, providing awards totaling nearly $20 million towards scholarships, and allowing them to attend one of Long Island’s 47 excellent Catholic elementary schools.

Tuition assistance through Tomorrow’s Hope

is available to all families who show a financial need, regardless of ethnicity or religious affiliation. Not surprisingly, the applicants for Tomorrow’s Hope assistance are from a variety of different backgrounds that represent the diversity of our Island. The common thread is a desire for an education of the whole child, in mind, body and spirit.

Tomorrow’s Hope supporters come from every walk of life, and they donate in a variety of ways; directly, where any amount large or small is appreciated, they donate through matching programs offered by their employers, and they bequeath portions of their estate to help fund Catholic education. The program that gets the most feedback, however, is the STAR Program. The Student Tuition Assistance Relationship (STAR) Program identifies students in high need of tuition assistance and matches them with a generous donor - a ‘STAR’ who contributes tuition assistance of $2,000 a year. Although tuition varies across the Diocese,

this program is intended to fund roughly half of the student’s tuition while the parent/guardian is asked to contribute the remainder.

The STAR donor-student relationship is a special one - it consists of correspondence between the student and the donor throughout the school year. This relationship is unique in that the donor can see first-hand how their generous contribution directly helps their STAR student to thrive in Catholic elementary school.

The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation orchestrates a number of charitable events during the course of each year including a Gala social event in the spring, a golf outing in the fall, and a holiday event around Christmas. This year, there will even be a new event, the St. Joseph 5K Fun Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, on March 19th.

Building on the success of their inaugural event last March where over 350 runners participated, the St Joseph School in Garden City announced that this year’s race will benefit Tomorrow’s Hope

Foundation. Running on a 5K circuit through the flat, fast, tree-lined streets of Garden City, the race will be professionally chip timed and is USA Track and Field Certified. Appropriate for both serious runners, and for those who just want to come out and have some fun while supporting this worthwhile cause, the event will offer a post race festival with a DJ, face painting, refreshments and age category awards for the 5K. There will also be a 1-mile untimed fun run to allow every child to finish. Every child in the fun run will receive a prize. All ages and levels of fitness are welcome in this family friendly event.

Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action.

Recyling Efforts

The Eastern Suffolk BOCES Brookhaven Learning Center is known for its recycling efforts.

“The students and staff take recycling very seriously in this building,” said Special Education Teacher Rosemarie Reichert.

The staff wanted to start the new year off doing something purposeful with the plastic water bottles.

They chose a unit from the Unique Learning System®

dedicated to repurposing everyday household items.

The Unique Learning System® is an educational program that offers thematic units of study and differentiated materials to teach special learners.

Reichert said, “The students learned how to create a beautiful floral light design using a typical water bottle. They cut the top of the water bottle, made four or six cuts to

resemble petals and then painted the petals with acrylic paint. A small slice was made in the cap so it fit over the light bulb.”

Students learned that substances can undergo changes that make them look different, but the chemical composition of the substance remains unchanged. This is known as physical change.

Learning Egyptian History Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students from Brookhaven Learning Center @ Samoset Middle School, an inclusive special education program, enjoyed two weeks of learning about Egyptian history and culture with a discovery chest on loan from the Huntington Arts Council.

Speech and Language Teacher Kim Leonard said, “The students explored various tools, artifacts, and replicas of ancient Egyptian objects while modeling

elaborate headdresses and jewelry reminiscent of the days when powerful pharaohs ruled the land.”

Funding for the Egyptian objects was made possible

by ESBOCES Arts-inEducation.

Classroom teachers took turns using the chest to introduce stories and connect historical facts to present day current events.

In art class, posters were created to showcase the historical clothing and designs of this colorful time in history.

The speech teachers reviewed vocabulary words and created stories using hieroglyphic stamps.

Speech Teacher Renee Gretschel said, “We used Egyptian symbols when we created the stories to enhance the historical and cultural significance of the history lesson.”

The event culminated with the students watching Engineering Egypt, a movie that described in detail how pyramids were built.

CUB SCOUT VISIT - On January 14th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner hosted Cub Scout Pack 204 of Miller Place at Brookhaven Town Hall.

They spoke to the scouts about the history of Brookhaven Town and the functions of Town Government. Supervisor Romaine stressed the importance of how decisions made by their local elected representatives impact their daily lives.

In order to meet the growing demand of younger children interested in playing lacrosse, a group of active parents have formed a new lacrosse program, Lions Pride Sports Club, Inc. (LPSC).

LPSC recently announced the launch of the Pride Lacrosse program, which offers year-round training and competition for children ages four to 14 in order to encourage and accommodate the longterm growth of lacrosse in the Longwood community.

The primary purpose of LPSC, a nonprofit sports organization, is to provide the youth within the Longwood community an opportunity to learn and enjoy the sport of lacrosse, as well as coordinated programs designed to bring community members

together through general wellness and health and fitness activities, all in an atmosphere of exemplary sportsmanship and integrity. Its mission is to promote the game of lacrosse in a fun, safe and sportsmanlike environment by offering a year-round lacrosse program that is dedicated to the continuous skill development of all players and teaches a game of speed, position and finesse. Each participant, regardless of initial skill level, will have the opportunity to learn the game, develop individual skills and prepare for the next level of lacrosse.

“We are proud to offer this exciting and fun program to the lacrosse players in the Longwood community,” said David

J Wolf, President, Lions Pride Sports Club, Inc. “In addition to the athletic benefits, we also seek to promote a supportive, inclusive community with programs designed to bring Longwood families together through general wellness, health and fitness and various volunteer activities.”

To kick things off, LPSC’s Lady Pride girls recently completed an eight-week indoor winter league at the All-Star Sports Arena in Selden, competing with many local teams, including Comsewogue, Middle Country, Miller Place, Rocky Point and Shoreham-Wading River. In addition, LPSC is currently hosting practice sessions multiple days of the week for various age groups at KK

Miss Rizitello spoke with students about how her passion for singing and music started when she was a student at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School, and how, at 15 years-old, in 2012 she was the youngest competitor ever selected to perform

on ‘The Voice’ at that time.

She discussed working with Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine and today she performs at events across the country.

The students enjoyed singing with Miss Rizitello and were very excited to learn about her exciting singing career.

Sharing Snowman Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students learned the importance of sharing and giving back to their community through a “Sharing Snowman” project.

Students were asked to

decorate a blank snowflake in return for a dollar donation by the Unity Drive Pre-K/Kindergarten Center in the Middle Country Central School District. The donations were used to purchase

holiday gifts for families in need in the community.

This year, over $1,000 was collected to purchase presents for the nearly eight families identified and all gifts were delivered in time for the holidays.

SHARING SNOWMAN - Middle Country Central School District’s Unity Drive Pre-K/Kindergarten Center decorated snowflakes in return for dollar donations to purchase holiday gifts for those in need. The students learned the importance of sharing and giving back to their community with the “Sharing Snowman” project, which raised over $1,000.

Suffolk County Community College’s Cheer Team placed third in the nation at the UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships last weekend.

The competition, the most prestigious college cheerleading championship in the country, was held at the Walt Disney World® Resort’s ESPN Wide World

of Sports Complex from January 15th to 17th.

Suffolk was one of only two junior colleges competing among a total of 11 colleges and universities in the Open All-Girl Division.

“Our goal was to make it into finals at our first ever UCA Nationals,” said Head Cheer & Dance Coach Gina Caputo. “Being ranked 3rd in the nation went beyond our expectations. Now to work towards next year and

bring home the title!”
