The mission of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is to provide tuition assistance for families who want their children to attend a Catholic elementary school, but need financial help to make it possible.

The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation solicits donations from individuals and corporations, and allocates that money to

families based on financial need.

A Tomorrow’s Hope grant is awarded anonymously to the family to offset the tuition cost based on family income and expenses.

Five Cents, Please Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County.

“Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.”

The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.”

As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged.

“It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel.

I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game.

I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks.

I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment.

I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands.

Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

charitable and educational farm with a cooperative garden that provides fresh produce to several local food ministries and pantries. Daniel’s project was to construct wooden benches for Hobbs Farm.

Daniel built eight wooden replacement benches for the farm’s wheelchair garden. The previous multi-purpose benches were of like design and had lasted nearly a decade.

On January 14th, Supervisor Ed Romaine honored Boy Scouts Ryan McElwaine and Daniel Ragone from Troop 356 during the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony held at the Centereach Fire Department.

Ryan’s Eagle Scout project was the construction of storage shelves for Hobbs Farm in Centereach. Ryan ripped down an existing unit and built out shelving for the storage of pots for plants and more.

Toy Drive a Success

Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau INTERFACE Program’s 2017 Holiday Food Drive and Holiday Toy Drive helped a total of 14,118 people during this past holiday season. The Food Drive provided meals for 1,697 families in need and a total of 6,932 people.

The Toy Drive provided toys for 1,086 families in need and a total of 7,186 children.

Supervisor Romaine said, “I want to thank everyone who donated to the Interface Food and Toy Drives for helping to make

this holiday season happier for needy families across Brookhaven Town. Our Youth Bureau staff, along with JVC Broadcasting work very hard to organize and get the word out about these events and it pays off in the smiles of children who get to have a merry Christmas.”

Councilman Michael Loguercio said, “In the true spirit of Christmas, Brookhaven residents have once again been very generous with their donations. Thank you to everyone who helped make the holidays happier for the families

and children throughout Brookhaven.”

INTERFACE is a partnership between individuals, good corporate neighbors and the Town of Brookhaven united in a common effort to provide help to Brookhaven’s less fortunate residents.

Partners in Science

Twenty-seven high school students from nine school districts visited Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) recently for the Partners in Science Program, an annual event cosponsored each year by Eastern Suffolk BOCES School Library System and the internationally renowned research facility.

Partners in Science is a program that grants select high school students working on approved science projects access to the vast BNL scientific database of reference and research materials.

The day began with a presentation by one of the lab’s biophysical chemists followed by a tour of the National Synchrotron

Light Source II (NSLSII). The NSLS-II is one of the world’s most advanced synchrotron light sources, designed to produce x-rays 10,000 times brighter than BNL’s original light source, the NSLS. Its purpose is to provide extremely bright x-rays for basic and applied research in biology and medicine, materials and chemical sciences, geosciences and environmental sciences, and nanoscience. Next, the research librarian gave an orientation to students on how to navigate the facility’s enormous directory of research materials.

Students were then permitted to research and download materials for their own

projects, all of which were vetted prior to receiving approval to participate in the program. (Students do not have access to this information outside of the lab.) Scientists and students then dined together during lunch to encourage interaction and free conversation.

Said Carl Vitevitch, Eastern Suffolk BOCES administrative coordinator for the School Library System, “Partners in Science makes it possible for science students to meet and engage with scientists at one of the world’s most high-profile labs, hopefully inspiring them to pursue careers in the industry.”

What is Catholic Schools Week?

Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January, which in 2018 is January 28th, and runs through February 3th.

The theme for the Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Learn. Serve.

Lead. Succeed.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members.

Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.

On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parishioners, to welcome visitors and to introduce new families to the benefits of a Catholic education.

These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the first Sunday (the 28th), and a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week.

Many schools offer additional open houses and opportunities to visit during the week as well.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor.

Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.

LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan

mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so.

They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats.

As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events.

Love of Reading In association with their Pick a Reading Partner program, students at Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School were recently treated to an informative literary assembly promoting the joy of reading, titled “The Bodacious Book Show.”

The Connetquot Central School District would like to congratulate Connetquot High School junior Diana Gifford for designing the winning logo in a recent graphic design competition hosted by the Connetquot High School Music Department.

Racing the Clock

An Afternoon of Beauty, an annual fundraising event sponsored by the cosmetology departments at Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale and Harry B. Ward Technical Center in Riverhead, was recently open to the public and offered salon services for a donation of $5 along with a nonperishable food

item. Both schools are part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Local food banks and charities in both communities benefitted from this event, which is in its tenth year and raised

a grand total of $1,840, in addition to the food that was collected. Students were proud to participate by putting the skills they are perfecting into practice on real customers, which consisted of friends, family members, colleagues, and community members.

Problem-solving, collaboration and teamwork were at the center of a recent challenge Grundy Avenue Elementary School thirdgrade students in the Sachem Central School District worked to solve as they participated in a Breakout EDU activity.

As part of the event, each class raced the clock as it attempted to solve puzzles to determine the combination to open each

lock within a secure box to reach a prize. In the allotted 45-minute time period, student teams worked together as they solved reading puzzles that gave them clues to the next portion of the challenge.

Breakout EDU is an activity that encourages students to work collaboratively while incorporating creativity, communication and critical thinking skills.

Each activity can be

adapted to the current curriculum and includes a wide variety of subjects such as ELA, math, science and history.

At the conclusion of the activity, each student group reflected on its Breakout EDU experience.

Students explored what they learned during the activity, what problemsolving methods worked well and what they can do to improve next time.

Player of the Year

Connetquot High School decorated girls varsity volleyball all-star Mackenzie Cole has been named the 2017-2018 Gatorade New York Volleyball Player of the Year, as selected by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee.

In addition to being named New York’s best high school volleyball player, she is also the first Gatorade New York Volleyball Player of the Year to be chosen from Connetquot High School.

According to its website, the Gatorade State Player of

the Year award winners are evaluated and selected on the basis of three criteria – athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character – all of which Mackenzie shows with class and professionalism.

Mackenzie, who has been playing volleyball since a young age, led the T-Birds to a 39-1-2 record and the Class AA state championship this past season. In addition, she also contributed toward the team’s state championship title during the 2015-2016 season.

Collective conversations fostered connections as Samoset Middle School students in the Sachem Central School District interacted with teachers and building administration outside of the traditional classroom structure during a recent program.

As part of the Making Connections initiative proposed by Principal James Horan, the building leadership team organized

the event as a chance for teachers and students to converse in a different setting. After enjoying breakfast, attendees divided into groups and participated in an activity that involved passing around a numbered beach ball with six corresponding questions. Members of the group passed the ball among themselves and depending on what number was facing them answered a question

A 2017-2018 Under Armour First Team All-American, Mackenzie recorded 333 kills, 292 digs and 74 service aces.

The Long Island Player of the Year, she was also named a First Team All-American by FloVolleyball and earned First Team All-State honors for the third consecutive season.

As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Mackenzie will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program.

Every Gatorade Player of the Year state winner receives a $1,000 grant to donate and will have the opportunity to enter for an additional $10,000 spotlight grant by writing a brief essay explaining why their selected organization deserves additional support.

Mackenzie has maintained an A average in the classroom.

Additionally, she has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball on scholarship at Duke University this fall.

The district congratulates Mackenzie on this achievement.

Qualifying for States The Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School “Roverines” robotics team recently competed in a regional VEX In The Zone Robotics Competition at Farmingdale.

The Roverines finished in first place, earning the team the Tournament Champion trophy.

With the victory, the Roverines have qualified to

compete in the Southern New York State VEX Robotics Championship in March. The Roverines have qualified for the State competition each of the 3 years since the club originated. The students will look to repeat their performance from last year where they finished in 1st place in the NY State competition and went on to compete at the VEX

Worlds Competition in Louisville, KY. The District continues to provide students with an educational experience that not only actively engages them in STEM activities inside the classroom, but provides students with extracurricular opportunities such as the robotics team to further their interest and knowledge.

QUALIFYING FOR STATES - The Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School Roverines robotics team poses together following their win at the recent regional VEX in the Zone Robotics Competition.

Lifesaving Skills Sachem Middle School students are ready to react when it comes to emergency situations, thanks to a districtwide CPR initiative, which started in 1988.

For 30 years, seventhgrade students throughout the Sachem Central School District middle schools have been learning a wide variety of lifesaving skills. Within their health education classes, students learn the proper CPR procedure, the Heimlich

Maneuver for choking situations and how to use an automated external defibrillator in the case of a cardiac arrest.

They begin by surveying the situation, designating a bystander to call for help and then beginning emergency care once they assess the patient’s condition. Using lifelike CPR manikins, the students also practice effective chest compression depth, cadence and how to deliver rescue breaths.

“This class creates the next generation of lifesavers,” said Chairperson for Secondary Health Education Lori Hewlett. “This initiative prepares our students for emergency situations and empowers them with lifesaving skills.”

After the completion of a written and practical certification exam, each student receives an official CPR certification card from the American Heart Association.

Exploring Mars

Lego League Qualifiers Students from across Long Island are set to dive into a series of FIRST® LEGO® League Qualifiers – presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) – starting this weekend.

Students (ages nine to 14) and their mentors from the program have worked hard to research, design, build, program and test LEGO robots that will best address the “Challenge” set forth in FIRST HYDRO DYNAMICSSM. For this challenge, students were tasked with identifying a problem within the human water cycle and finding a solution to the problem. Examples might include something as simple as quenching one’s thirst or swimming

in a pool, or as complicated as how water is used to produce food, energy and even technology, among other things. Once a problem was identified, the students then evaluated current solutions and subsequently designed, built and tested an innovative solution, using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® kit, that adds value to society.

The students will then present the solution during one of six different Qualifier tournaments being held as follows: Great Hollow Middle School • Saturday, January 20 | 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

• Saturday, January 20 | 1 to 6 p.m.

• Sunday, January 21 | 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mineola High School • Saturday, February 3 | 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

• Saturday, February 3 | 1 to 6 p.m.

• Sunday, February 4 | 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Teams competing in the aforementioned events will then earn the opportunity to subsequently advance to the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Championship tournament at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 4th.

Few events in the last decade of space exploration have captured the world’s imagination like NASA’s ongoing Mars Exploration Program.

In 2004, the successful deployment of the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity launched a new era of scientific investigation of our nearest neighbor.

On Tuesday, February 6th at 7 p.m., the Cradle is proud to present an evening with NASA engineer, Kobie Boykins. For Boykins, a mechanical engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Rover’s success was also a personal triumph: he helped design and build the solar arrays that enabled the Rovers to keep going long after their planned 90-day life.

Boykins is also intimately involved with the latest venture to Mars, as

supervisor of the mobility and remote sensing mast teams for the Mars Science Laboratory, better known as Curiosity. Curiosity landed on Mars and has made headlines with evidence that conditions on Mars, including the presence of water, once could have supported life. For work on this and other compelling projects, Bokins received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal, one of the highest honors given to NASA employees and contractors.

Boykins’ boundless enthusiasm for unraveling the mysteries of outer space, and Mars in particular, is infectious.

As a complement to the classroom curriculum, Sachem High School North art students took an upclose look at several famous pieces of artwork during a recent field trip to the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington. The exhibit included Andy Warhol, who conceptualized the Pop Art movement, and Romare Bearden, who was a pioneer of AfricanAmerican art in the 20th century.

Students viewed pieces from each famous artist as they came together in groups to discuss the works of art and share their thoughts. This opportunity provided students an authentic experience with the process of analyzing and responding to works of art.

Attending this program

will qualify them to enter the Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum competition.

Their submitted artwork must be inspired by a piece of art currently on exhibit at the museum and must be accompanied by an artist’s statement. The artist’s statement should reflect the connection between the work on exhibit and their own creation. If selected, their work will hang in the Heckscher Museum of Art from March 17 to April 15, 2018.

The evaluators for the contest are interested in the art students’ thought process and what inspired each student to create their own piece. They want to see how the participating art students think outside the box.

During the trip, museum educators provided examples of how other previous students made such connections, which showed the Sachem High School North students that the boundaries for creativity, interpretation and exploration are endless.

Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum is the only juried art competition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their artwork in a museum setting. More than 40 schools will submit over 400 works of art, and from those submissions, only about 85 pieces will actually make it into the show.
