It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.
Students to be Honored The LIU Post Art Department will honor three students from local high schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties at the awards ceremony for “Advanced Visions 13: High School Artists of Excellence,” to be held at the University’s Hutchins Gallery on January 25th, 2017. All of the participating students were selected by their teachers to represent their high schools in the exhibition. The exhibition recognizes the superior work being done by high school students in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Portfolio Preparation art programs across Long Island and is on view through January 25th, 2017. Three students are recognized with Juror’s Awards. Maria Mancz, a student from Division Avenue High School earned an award for her mixed media piece, “Old Man and The Sea”. Ms. Mancz’s art teacher is

It’s that time of year again. Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 16th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by

Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School staff, students and administrators in the Connetquot Central School District recently visited Ockers Gardens on Montauk Highway in Oakdale, keeping up with the annual tradition where students and staff members sing and play holiday favorites for senior
residents and visitors. Coordinated by ELA teacher Pearl HaberZaiff and members of the OBMS Music Department, this annual holiday celebration generates a wonderful holiday spirit for the residents. More than 75 “senior friends” were served holiday treats while they enjoyed an
entertaining series of tunes and songs by the students. “This celebration was a huge success and helped make the holiday special for the seniors, as well as our OBMS students,” said Mrs. Haber-Zaiff. “I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this Ockers Gardens visit such a success.”

Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the
holiday celebrations as imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. We are so grateful to those who took the time
to participate in this event and for their generosity to ensure that this fundraising event helped to preserve the future of Old Westbury Gardens for years to come.” During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens. Throughout his 40 year relationship with Old Westbury Gardens, Gachot has been involved in
countless preservation projects. The dinner also featured a presentation by guest speaker Michael Devonshire, a renowned architectural conservator with more than 25 years of experience in the field of historic preservation. “The holiday season is a magical time at the Old Westbury Gardens, and we were proud to host such an illustrious group this year for our Annual December Dinner,” said Nancy Costopulos, President and CEO of Old Westbury Gardens. “This year’s event
was incredibly successful, as we were able to raise enough funds to help support several exciting preservation initiatives for 2017. We were thrilled to see so many familiar faces and some new ones at our premier fundraising event.” Through the incredible generosity of distinguished guests, Old Westbury Gardens was successfully able to raise enough funds to support significant renovation projects to preserve the Westbury House’s unique

Creativity on Display At a recent holiday luncheon, held at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held its annual business meeting and first fund-raising gettogether. The CRTA grants two $1,000 scholarships to the children, or grandchildren, of retired Connetquot teachers, at its scholarship dinner. Close to 75 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and continue the fund-raising effort to present financial grants at the May, 2017 luncheon. CRTA President Peter Leis said that the organization meets “… three times per year, at

Seeking New Members Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco announced today that he is seeking new members for the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB). The SOCAB was established in January 2014 as a way to enhance communication and improve collaboration with residents. It is part of Sheriff DeMarco’s overall policy of “citizen engagement” to promote ethical and responsive government representation. In addition to the SOCAB, the Sheriff hosts two other Boards – the Youth Re-entry Task Force and a Veterans Reentry Task Force. “Each one of these
initiatives engages the public on important policy matters, and gives us a network of individuals with diverse backgrounds and expertise to help us innovate and think outside the box when seeking solutions to problems,” stated DeMarco. He added, “Preserving public trust in law enforcement and giving the people we serve a true stake in government are the overriding reasons we emphasize citizen engagement at the Sheriff’s Office.” Anyone interested in learning more about the SOCAB should visit the Sheriff’s Office’s website at www.suffolksheriff.com and click the “Citizen
