A sense of community radiated throughout the halls of Hiawatha Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as the Peer Education class from Sachem High School North visited to share a special lesson with fourthand fifth-grade students.

During the event, High School North seniors in Jonathan Chiaramonte’s Peer Education class delivered an important message about acceptance – noting that everyone has more in common than one may sometimes think.

With the assistance of the high school mediators,

students participated in a collection of classroom activities that made them more familiar with their fellow classmates.

One game incorporated a numbered beach ball and each number correlated with different questions for the students to answer.

Students shared things that they were afraid of, their initial feelings on moving up to the next grade level and people who inspire them. Another activity, named Cross the Line, called for students to listen to a series of questions and take a step forward when they identified with the question.

Creating Connections “Activities like Cross the Line give students the chance to get to know their peers on a different level,” said senior Nick Cariello. “Through their participation, they learned that we share similar qualities, feelings and experiences.”

Concluding the day’s activities, students returned to their classrooms where they reflected upon their experiences from a day of recognizing the commonalties that exist among their peers.

Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently welcomed family and friends to the annual Polar Express reception featuring Bosti’s pre-K students.

The event, which came together just before the holiday break, served as a fitting conclusion to students’ classroom study of the story of “The Polar Express.”

The school’s atrium was decorated with a giantsized bell hanging from the ceiling, as well as a locomotive, passenger car and tables adorned with railroad-themed images.

Additionally, the attending family members joined the students for songs and tasty treats.

Before leaving for the day, the students were visited by Santa Claus, who presented them with books and treats in celebration of the holiday season.

Snowed In Last week’s column was entitled Coming Out of the Cold; this week, Snowed In. Sensing a theme here?

January has always been my least favorite month.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other assorted milestones which fall within this 31 day period; but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, I find nothing particularly exciting about it.

For those who love snow, sure, there’s the potential for a few substantial blizzards to blow our way. But mostly, it’s a month that begins with the daunting process of undecking the halls and ends with faint hopes of a furry critter crawling out of a hole to determine just how much more cold weather we’ve yet to endure until spring beckons. Of course, let’s not forget the seemingly endless parade of holiday bills piling

up in the mailbox as we speak, as the horrifying realization of just how much we spent the previous month begins to set in. Joyful.

But, as with anything, January is something we must contend with, for better or worse. And so, we attempt to make the best of it by cooking up big pots of chili, baking cookies and settling in with our fuzzy slippers and pajamas as we once again pick up that book we’ve been meaning to finish since we started it back on the beach sometime in July. There are the movies we never got around to seeing in theaters that have since found their way to our cable channels, maybe a Netflix series or two to binge watch, even – dare we say it – some long overdue cleaning out of the closets. {But not the dreaded Christmas Closet. No, January is not a long enough

month for such a daunting task.} Thrilling? Perhaps not. But let’s face it – these are the activities we are all the more unlikely to touch as the year wears on, as the snowflakes melt away and reveal the beginning buds and blossoms we so look forward to come spring. And, if you do happen to revel in the cold, blustery weather, this is your time.

Brave the elements, take a hike, build a snowman . . . the white stuff won’t last forever.

Resolutions, abstract goals – whatever form your inspiration takes in 2018 – are best served by consistency, by constant reevaluation and modification, if needed.

January is just as important a month as any to not lose sight of the bigger picture even if it is a bit clouded by the frosted windowpane at the moment.

event. While I was speaking with Pastor Jim Ryan, he mentioned the inspiration behind being mobile. He explained, “Jesus didn’t make others come to Him to be helped, He went to them…that is why we operate in a mobile manner!”

Lighthouse Mission’s Youth Outreach operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students and, on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this service for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. Week after week, many youth on Long Island gather for these events and enjoy a wonderful time together; for many children, the meal they receive at an event will be their only meal of the day.

There is an overwhelming amount of people on Long Island who are in need, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that truly cares for those they serve. They operate 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so! They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are specifically in need of winter coat donations.

As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. All ages are welcome to volunteer! Providing Hope Beyond the Food ... this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This organization was founded in 1992 by Sister Elaine when she received a vision from God to “Share the Gospel of Jesus and Feed the Poor.” From there, she humbly took to the streets of Long Island with 10 bologna and cheese sandwiches and did just that.

Lighthouse Mission currently reaches 2,000 people per week with the same mission: sharing the Gospel of Jesus and feeding the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is now the president of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After recently meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved. I felt excitement for all they are doing and experienced such a renewed sense of hope. They are truly set apart from many other organizations because they purposefully accomplish much more than just feeding the hungry.

Lighthouse Mission operates a Food Outreach as well as a Youth Outreach.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays (in Coram and Ronkonkoma), Wednesdays (in Central Islip), Thursdays (in Shirley and Port Jefferson Station), Fridays (in Riverhead and Centereach) and Saturdays (in Patchogue and Bellport).

Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, they chose to go mobile and travel to different locales where those in need can line up and receive plenty of nutritional food, gentlyused clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the

ENL Family Night Connetquot Public Library was also in attendance to share information about all of the services that the library has to offer, and led a workshop for parents titled “Online Access to the Connetquot Public Library.” Mrs. Ladick also provided attendees with a meaningful tutorial on library website resources for parents and their children.

There were also handouts available that described the ENL program and services that Connetquot Public Library offers.

The attendees were also able to enjoy delicious foods, consisting of

elements of different cultures, such as fried rice, empanadas and pizza.

Learning Mandarin This December, the Connetquot Central School District’s C-Quest students were immersed in the study of world languages as they studied the Mandarin dialect of the Chinese language at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School during an interactive workshop with the Wu family.

Mrs. Wu, who teaches the Mandarin dialect at the Portledge School in Locust Valley, led the workshop along with her husband and two daughters.

“During the workshop, the students learned the basics of speaking Mandarin using pictures to express basic phrases regarding likes, dislikes and greetings,” said Lisa Manzo, who advises the C-Quest program with Kevin Keane.

“Additionally, they worked in groups to write words to create sentences and practice speaking with one another.”

Connetquot’s C-Quest program is dedicated to

enhancing the educational experience of the district’s fourthand fifthgrade students. Based at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district.

Started almost 30 years ago as Connetquot’s “Gifted and Talented” curriculum, today’s C-Quest program continues the mission of enriching the experiences of its students.

Picking Up Passengers Middle Country Central School District’s Unity Drive Pre-K/Kindergarten Center recently hosted a holiday themed event for students - with a special surprise appearance from

their parents. Ms. Conklin’s kindergarten class recently completed a reading comprehension lesson focused on the holiday classic The Polar Express

by Chris Van Allsburg.

Following the reading, students, teachers and parents worked together to bring the story to life as they boarded the inclassroom train - which was actually two long

decorated tables placed side by side - and took off on holiday adventures.

Students acted like Polar Express conductors as they walked around the classroom collecting their

parents’ tickets. Along their journey, students built gingerbread house and sipped on hot chocolate.

Middle Country Central School District continues to provide students with

educational opportunities that not only aid in developing necessary skillsets, but that also make learning an enjoyable and exciting experience.
