Centereach Resident Receives FREE’s ‘Employee Impact Award’ the call of duty, taking on responsibilities not required of her and altering her schedule to accommodate the individuals in her care.

Esther even volunteered to be quarantined at her work location after one of the individuals living there tested positive for COVID-19.

“Esther is a pleasure to work with, she is the true definition of a team player and a dedicated worker,” said Fetima Clinton, Residential Supervisor, FREE. “She exemplifies the mission of FREE. She

assists all of the individuals to help meet their potential, whether it be assisting with cooking, taking them out shopping to run services or just sitting down with them listening to their frustrations.”

“I’m honored to be the recipient of this year’s Employee Impact Award,” said Esther Rock. “My role as direct support professional provides me with the opportunity to learn about the individuals I support and help them to achieve their dreams.”

On December 7, 2020, Longwood High School senior Rachel Hines marked her formal commitment to pursue her athletic career at Mount St. Mary’s University by signing her NCAA Letter of Intent for Division I bowling.

Rachel has been an integral part of the girls’ varsity bowling team since seventh grade. In her junior year, Rachel’s bowling

average was 221.1667, the second-highest average in Suffolk County.

She has been named All-County and First Team Long Island. Additionally, Rachel qualified for the Section XI All-Star team and was named New York State champion in 2018.

“On behalf of the entire Athletic Department, we wish Rachel continued success as she competes at the Division I level,” said

Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics Alicia Smith. “We are so proud of Rachel, who not only demonstrates great athletic talent but also has maintained over a 90 average in the classroom, as well as taking an active role in the community.

We know she will make Longwood proud as she succeeds with her college career.”

Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015.

Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need.

They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response.

Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island.

The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island.

Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie.

“We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a

storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives.

They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street.

Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more.

However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind.

This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to five gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated.

What Is Herd Immunity?

Immunity Occur?

There are two ways that herd immunity can occur.

The first is when resistance develops naturally when the body is exposed to the virus or bacteria. At this point, the immune system will produce antibodies to fight off the infection. After recovery, these antibodies are still circulating, and should exposure to the same disease occur again, the body can defend against another infection.

Another way that herd immunity occurs is through vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that when the majority of people are vaccinated, it creates the same disease lockdown - fewer people get sick and fewer germs are able to spread from person to person. What’s more, even those who are not vaccinated, such as newborn babies or those who may not be able to get vaccinated due to chronic illnesses, will get some level of protection because the disease will not be spreading as readily within their communities.

When enough of a population is immune to a pathogen it prevents further spread and herd immunity is apparent.

Infectious diseases can strike at any time. Some of them cause relatively minor interruptions to daily life and often can resolve of their own accord when the body’s immune system mounts a successful defense.

Other diseases can cause serious, even lifethreatening symptoms or spread rapidly, which makes it essential for medical professionals to help slow down or stop the transmission.

What Is Herd Immunity?

Herd immunity is a term that often arises in relation to infectious diseases. Herd immunity has taken on renewed significance as the world has been battling COVID-19, the novel coronavirus introduced in late 2019. Herd immunity, which is sometimes called “community immunity,” “population immunity” or “social immunity,” refers to the indirect protection from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of the population has become immune to that disease.

If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, whether it is a bacteria or virus, that disease has nowhere to go and the spread stalls, according to WebMD. How Does Herd

Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time.

Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) hospitals—St. Francis, St. Charles and St. Catherine of Siena—each have earned an ‘A’ rating in the fall 2020 Hospital Safety Score from The Leapfrog Group. An ‘A’ is the highest rating awarded by Leapfrog.

Photo courtesy of Northwell Health Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health system, has sent 12 nurses to Michigan-based Henry Ford Health System to help clinicians there care for a rising number of patients suffering from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The staff sharing is occurring as part of a newly formed strategic alliance between the health systems, created to strengthen their ability to fight the new coronavirus and more effectively support the health and well-being of their communities.

The alliance is designed to enhance crisis preparedness through collaborative emergency and COVID-19 planning and the sharing of best practices.

It enables participating organizations to swiftly increase staffing capacity through temporary staff sharing – institutional requirements are worked through ahead of time to allow faster onboarding and reduce time-to-bedside for reinforcements. In the current exchange, which comes in answer to a call for assistance from the 30,000-employee Henry Ford Health System, Northwell’s intensive care and medical-surgical nurses are providing hands-on care at Henry

Ford Hospital in Detroit and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township.

“By promoting collaboration and forward planning, this alliance supercharges the ability of participating health systems to respond quickly and effectively to any crisis,” said Joseph Moscola, PA, senior vice president and Northwell’s chief people officer. “It implements and institutionalizes the lessons Northwell learned this spring in treating more COVID-19 patients than any other health system in the country, which is particularly important now as case counts climb in nearly every state.”

Northwell and Henry Ford were both recipients of aid in the form of staff-sharing by other organizations during the spring surge of COVID-19.

During the summer, as caseloads threatened to rise in Utah, Northwell provided critical care nurses to a hospital there.

The current round of staffsharing between Northwell and Henry Ford is the first to occur under the alliance and is particularly significant because the ongoing onslaught of COVID-19 is affecting almost every state, making it more difficult for hard-hit hospitals to

find temporary staff from agencies or other health care institutions.

The alliance, which may expand in the future to include other health care institutions around the country, provides an important relief valve for participating organizations and demonstrates shared values and the ability to collaborate in crisis in order to put patients first.

“There is no doubt that nearly ten months into this pandemic, our nurses are not only combatting the virus but the fatigue that comes with the daily stress of keeping our COVID-19 patients alive and helping them recover,” said Robert G. Riney, president, healthcare operations, and chief operating officer, Henry Ford Health System.

“Not only will this provide some welcome relief for our nurses, but it is also a tremendous morale boost to have your colleagues from another hard-hit region support you in this way.

“Everyone here at Henry Ford is grateful for the selflessness and generosity of spirit of these highly trained nurses from Northwell Health.

Hospitals are rated on how well they prevent errors, infections, injuries and drug mixups that could lead to medical complications and unnecessary loss of life.

Better Breathers Club For the estimated 16 million Americans living with cardiopulmonary disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), participating in a support group can improve their emotional well-being and have a positive impact on their health.

That is why Surge Rehabilitation and Nursing, located at 49 Oakcrest Ave in Middle Island, has joined with

the American Lung Association (ALA) to form a Better Breathers Club at the facility which offers an opportunity for cardiopulmonary disease patients to connect virtually, via ZOOM, with others who are facing similar experiences, obtain practical information and to receive support. The Middle Island facility has had a pulmonary support group for several years, but the partnership

with the ALA is a new venture, resulting in twice the number of group participants.

“With this support group we hope to promote respiratory health and a better sense of well-being for those living with chronic lung disease,” Robert Madigan, Director of the Cardio Pulmonary program at Surge.

The support group can also address lingering issues experienced by patients who

have had COVID-19.

The support group will cover an introduction to cardiopulmonary diseases; the benefits of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation; the role of family support in cardiopulmonary disease; heart healthy medical nutrition therapy and communicating with healthcare professionals.

The monthly support group meets every 3rd Wednesday at 1pm of the month and is

open to all and is currently using ZOOM meeting format.
