Catholic Health Services (CHS) employees once again pulled together to help others less fortunate this holiday season and with great results. Due to their hard work and generosity, hundreds of Long Island families experienced Thanksgiving

and Christmas cheer. Numerous turkeys, toys and other items were distributed in partnership with the Wyandanchbased Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center and other organizations. CHS facilities joined together the 9th annual toy drive,

distributing new toys last year CHS Services collected more than 700 toys our biggest donation ever. These donations assisted over 400 families. Also, warm winter clothing articles were collected for those in need.

And so, we begin again. The slate has been wiped clean, for now. There is always carryover, damage to be repaired and turmoil to be calmed. Life is like that, for better or worse. As much as a new year cannot undo the happenings of the year prior, each new day is an opportunity for a fresh start of sorts; each hour, each minute even. We have only to forge ahead, to take these chances as they are presented to us. May we all carry this sentiment with us into 2018… and, if you do happen to have a neatly categorized list of goals for the year, give it a glance from time to time; make adjustments as needed, and keep moving forward. That, in itself, is a resolution everyone can get behind.

The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children.

The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food. This Boutique is much more than a distribution

LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. Their annual Homeless Count Event occurs each January, and is a time when trained volunteers go out across the island to coordinate point-in-time counts of sheltered and unsheltered men, women and children. During this time, they also distribute toiletry kits, sleeping bags and other essential items to the homeless. Twenty-five top-of-theline Pucci mannequins, donated by Saks Fifth Avenue in Huntington, arrived at LIU Post’s College of Management on December 13th to be used by students enrolled in its Fashion Merchandising program. The mannequins arrived with an additional anonymous donation of 50 high-fashion vintage couture gowns from top designers, such as Jacques Fath, Ungaro and Yves St Laurent. LIU Post’s growing fashion merchandising

program is unique to the region, with a focus on the business end of the fashion industry. The mannequins and dresses will be part of a Capstone project this spring where the students will catalog and display the items, creating a full fashion exhibition with detailed signage as their culminating project. This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more.

It’s not just for learning in the

classroom but for outside experiences. And her experience in the business makes her so hands-on. You couldn’t get that from anybody else. She doesn’t teach you from books. She teaches you from experience.” Being in close proximity to and having business relationships with Herschliefer’s and the Americana Manhasset mall has offered them opportunities to experience hands-on experiential learning.

Holiday Fun Run More than 150 runners recently took part in the seventh annual Connetquot Central School District Habitat for Humanity Club 5K Holiday Run/Walk held at Connetquot High School. Due to outstanding community efforts, including donations during the event and T-shirt sales, close to $5,000 was raised for Habitat of Humanity of Suffolk County. “It was a great success, and the recipients of the money raised today will

be very thankful to all of you,” said Connetquot High School Habitat for Humanity Club co-advisers Jason Wilans and Dennis Fagan. “We are looking forward to doing it again next year, and hope all of you come out again to have another great run.” Prior to the 9:30 a.m. start, Connetquot High School’s talented Long Island Voices, conducted by James Nagle, sang the national anthem in recognition of the event. Recognized for Character

For consistently demonstrating exemplary character, nineteen High School students were recognized by Sayville teachers and staff at the Fall 2017 Breakfast of Champions. The morning ceremony, to which the students’ family members were also invited, recognized students for their innate set of values evident by how they conduct themselves throughout the school day. Breakfast of Champions, held once each semester, has been a beloved tradition, one that keeps on giving to all who attend. As she has done every year, Assistant Principal Jillian Makris was eloquent in introducing the purpose of the character recognition program and what general qualities of character have set these selected students apart. “These are the students who help make up the moral fabric of our school… and every day they strive to be the best they can… not just for a grade on their report card but in life as human

beings.” In addition, Mrs. Makris thanked the family members present for providing the upbringing, encouragement, and support within the home that nurtured these remarkable students. Some familiar faces and family names among this year’s recipients were proof that “strong families make good communities.” During the presentations, District faculty and staff members called upon each recipient one-by-one and shared their appreciation with personalized messages, at which time each student shook hands with Assistant Principal Jillian Makris and received a Breakfast of Champions certificate and plaque with his or her portrait on a Wheaties Box background. In closing, Mrs. Makris referred to the quote about “bending to help” and noted “…that is the main tenant we heard this morning. Each and every one of you—all the nominees here—you’ve all helped someone in this

High School or outside….” Immediately, Makris requested the nominees stand at their seats for additional applause. After, everyone enjoyed a satisfying breakfast sponsored by the Breakfast of Champions program which was served and prepared for this special occasion by the Sayville food service workers. Additional thanks went to the technology department (Mr. Vogel and Mr. Cross) for making the plaques, and Mr. Ari Kramer and his chamber students who provided the soothing musical ambiance. Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been

proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools

and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance

and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest,

dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits.
