Nurse Assisting students from teacher Jane Doherty’s class at the Academy’s Milliken Technical Center (MTC) went to Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Sayville on December 18th to bring some good, old-fashioned holiday joy. Along with their teacher, the students were ringing bells and singing an array of holiday carols and favorite tunes for the residents, some of whom were able to sing along and really engage in the physical and mental

activity.

After singing the songs and carols, the nurse assistants went around the room to greet each resident personally with a smile, a hand squeeze or a hug. Also, they brought a warm pair of socks for each man and woman as a holiday gift. The nurse assistants brought life to the room and warm social interaction to the residents.

Nurse assistants look forward to many career opportunities and a

strong job outlook for the future. They help provide basic care for patients in hospitals and individuals in residential care and long-term care facilities, such as assisted living communities, nursing homes and rehab centers.

The Nurse Assisting program is offered by ESBOCES at its Eastern Long Island Academy for Applied Technology centers: Milliken Technical Center, Islip campus; and Ward Technical Center, Riverhead.

New Year, New Me Mindset.

It’s officially 2019! If you’re reading this right now, think about all you have to be grateful for: eyes to see, education to read, knowledge to interpret, the gift of free time to do what you please (which happens to be reading this article, thank you!) and the blessing of seeing another year begin.

giving your recyclables to a homeless individual so they can get the money for them instead of you getting the money for yourself or simply cooking a meal for a needy friend every so often. Think of how much more we can do for those around us and even those around the world!

It’s not uncommon this time of year to hear people speak of New Year’s Resolutions and what way they want to “better themselves” in the New Year. Society has almost groomed us to believe we need to partake in coming up with a way to improve ourselves with the start of each New Year.

One thing I have felt called to do in my life is to help those in need in Africa. I don’t know why specifically there, but it’s been a calling I have had for most of my life. I’ve sponsored a child in Kenya, got involved with another organization that helps people in need in Africa, and since I specifically feel called to help those in Africa suffering from a lack of clean water, I recently decided to start a fundraiser through an organization to raise money to bless people in need in subSaharan Africa with fresh water.

My question is: why do we feel the need to start each New Year thinking about ourselves? Don’t we do enough of that already? Just think, on an average day we pick out an outfit for ourselves in the morning, eat meals throughout the day that we enjoy, partake in habits we created, work a job that we applied for and connect with friends that we chose. The last thing we need to do is to start each New Year by thinking of more ways to make life about us.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), by 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million older Americans, comprising

roughly 20 percent of the U.S. population.

With age comes the added burden of dealing with illnesses such as heart failure, dementia and cancer, any one of which can leave you unable to make decisions involving

your care. Unless you have a plan in place, the burden will fall on your family.

Protect your loved ones from having to make life and death decisions on your behalf by developing an advance care plan today.

I do believe we should be mindful of our habits, our lifestyles and ourselves, always bettering ourselves to make the world a better place. However, I believe we should get in a habit of thinking more of others and less of ourselves.

This New Year, instead of thinking of how much weight you want to lose, how many countries you want to travel to, what job promotion you want to achieve or what you want others to think of you, try changing your mindset to think of how you can help others. Maybe your New Year’s Resolution can be to volunteer once a week at a local non-profit, donate all your unwanted clothes instead of throwing them in the garbage,

After plenty of research, the organization I started my fundraiser through is The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation.

My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will fully fund a water project in a needy community in sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to receive a fresh water well and learn proper sanitation skills. If I do not reach my fundraising goal, the organization will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in subSaharan Africa receive fresh water.

I simply cannot imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people.

I hope we can all see the beauty in helping others. It just so happens that when we lose ourselves in serving others, we actually find ourselves in the midst of it. The more we give, the more we receive! I believe the biggest misunderstanding that anyone can have is to believe their life is theirs to do whatever they please with. Living with that type of mindset can lead you into an egotistical lifestyle and it easily distracts you from what your calling really is, because we all are here for a purpose.

Annual Holiday Luncheon Members of the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) attended the annual Holiday luncheon at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore on a sunny, if breezy, December 13th! This social event, business meeting and fund-raising get-together puts the retirees in the spirit of the holidays, and helps raise funding for the association’s May, 2018, Scholarship luncheon.

The CRTA grants several $500 scholarships to the children, or grandchildren, of retired Connetquot teachers, at its scholarship luncheon. Close to 75

retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news and enjoy a tasty lunch! CRTA President Peter Leis said that the organization meets “ … three times per year, at which time we can share updates on legal, medical, financial matters, and trips that are arranged for our members.” CRTA Secretary, Pat Duda, distributed minutes of the last meeting, along with CRTA financial statements to the members as the luncheon got underway.

He took a corner of the upholstery store and turned it into Computer LI. Once established, he moved into the unit next to the upholstery store, where he and his Dad could still cover one another.

Carlos’ business covers computer repairs, website design, networks, backups, education and pretty much everything you can think of. But it is the way he delivers his services that is so interesting to me.

Some clients call him simply because they are stuck. One such client couldn’t figure out how to order tickets to a show online, so he accessed in remotely and showed the gentleman how to successfully order the tickets.

Another service he provides is automatic backups, as many of us are not diligent in this area, but we always end up regretting it later. Unlike other companies, Carlos

I explained that during the winter months when it is not as easy to take my long hikes outdoors or to play outdoor sports, I do tend to be more sedentary. I also have a larger appetite in the winter. However, I never pass up a moment to squeeze in some form of physical activity, even when I am doing something like watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. I call it my “Lazy Girl Workout.” Sounds funny, right?

Most days, as I am laying on the floor or in bed doing my “Netflix and Chill” thing, I take the opportunity to do my leg lifts in repetition for about half an hour. It gives my legs a nice, low impact workout. I will also do my abdominal isometrics and some arm circles while I’m at it. No, it’s not quite as robust as 45 minutes on a treadmill or an hour of lifting weights, but if you compare doing nothing to doing something, I am ahead of the game.

Human beings will often set up losing propositions for themselves by saying, “Well, if I can’t do the very best thing, then

why bother at all?” They fail to see the immense value in a whole lot of consistent small steps.

Last year, I was having a moment when I was feeling very overwhelmed. There were a lot of challenges going on in my life in a rather short period of time. My father said to me, “By the yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” As simple as it sounds, that phrase absolutely changed my perspective. If you can only manage your life and your goals inch by inch right now, then do that. If you can manage your life by the yard, then do that. Either way, do something.

To go back to my original conversation with my coworker, before long, I had her brainstorming the small exercises she could do while in her office (push-ups against the file cabinet) or in her car (hello glute and ab isometrics!). Whatever your goal, be it fitness, career, family and so forth; do consistent small things each day, each week, each month, each year. One day you will look behind you and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

Chewy Macaroons

By Ika Campbell of Miller Place, New York Ika Campbell of Miller Place, New York is a recipe buff with a special affinty for what our nation’s presidents ate throughout the decades.

In fact, one of the prized possessions in her kitchen is a cookbook filled with past presidents’ favorite family recipes.

Ika particularly loves whipping up Chewy Macaroons for her family during holidays and special occasions. She shares that this macaroon recipe was a family favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and the Johnson family, during their time in the White House.

What You Will Need:

2 liquid egg whites 1 pinch of salt 1 half cup of sugar 1 cup sweetened, shredded coconut 1 half teaspoon of vanilla extract

Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees Beat egg whites with salt until stiff Gradually beat in sugar until stiff (shiny peaks will form) Slowly fold in coconut and vanilla

Baking:

Drop by the teaspoonful onto a lightly greased baking sheet Leave about 2 inches in between each cookie on the sheet Bake on the middle shelf for 20 minutes or until golden brown

Serving:

Cool cookies on a rack, and then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Remove from refrigerator an hour before serving. Enjoy!

There is a Tony Robbins phrase that stays with me, which goes as follows: “People tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and they tend to underestimate what can be accomplished in a decade.”

I love that phrase and think of it often. To bring it out to a wider perspective, I interpret it to mean that human nature tends to box us in to thinking that when it comes to meeting a goal or aspiration, we must take an “all or nothing” approach. Making The Perfect Gift Parents and caregivers gathered in kindergarten classrooms at Verne W. Critz Elementary School in the South Country Central School District to accompany their children in the making of special handcrafted holiday gifts.

The day was a perfect

opportunity to learn the value of giving to others.

The classrooms were set up by stations where students crafted a snowman ornament, designed a patterned necklace, counted out ingredients in a recipe for reindeer food and designed candle

holders, holiday cards and holiday trees. While the students got to work making their gifts, they were encouraged to think about who the recipients of their gifts, made with love and kindness, would be.

of Lincoln Logs, tested their pattern skills with the Out Run the Grinch game, labeled the Grinch with vocabulary words and rolled the dice to count the number of water beads to fill the Grinch’s heart.

They also built Christmas trees out of plastic cups, crafted paper Grinch faces and, of course, settled on the carpet to read “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Alumna Promotes Peace

Connetquot High School graduate and current Peace Corps volunteer Victoria Catherine Rooks was recently joined by students, staff and former faculty members for a video fundraiser in benefit of the Save the Children Fund.

Ms. Rooks spoke to the attendees about her years of experience working with children and families in the African nation of Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland). She also brought along native arts and crafts, jewelry, T-shirts

and posters relating to this land-locked nation north of South Africa in order help raise funds for the Save the Children fund.

Additionally, a free viewing of the motion picture “Liyana” was shown to the supportive community members who attended the event. The film serves as a documentary, which includes children at orphanages speaking about their stories. Like many children in the nation, they have lost their parents to AIDS-related illnesses and are left in a vulnerable

position. The filmmaker works with the children to write their own fairy tale about a girl and her two brothers, drawing from their own experiences, almost as a form of therapy.

“Recently, the movie ‘Liyana’ has been available in select theaters in America,” said Ms. Rooks.

“Besides being just a great movie, this film is particularly special to me because it was filmed and created here in Eswatini,

by Swazi children with the help of a South African storyteller.”

Centereach Tree Lighting For almost thirty years, the Centereach Civic Association has celebrated their community with a Christmas tree and Menorah lighting. This year’s event took place on Wednesday, December 5th at 2100 Middle Country Road, across from the Suffolk Diner.

Over the years this event has evolved and grown steadily! For about the last 8 years, various choral groups from Dawnwood Middle School and Centereach High School have performed at the event. The groups take turn singing Christmas Carols, Hanukkah songs and some miscellaneous songs chosen simply as a crowd pleaser.

The attendance this year at this community event was record breaking! There

was an estimated 270 to 300 people enjoying the festivities. As the almost 50 foot tree was lit, a fire truck came around the bend with flashing lights and Santa aboard, who then went around to greet everyone!

At the microphone throughout the night was Diane Caudullo, the Centereach Civic President. She encouraged everyone to take the time and look around, say hello to one another and realize that “by mere location we have become neighbors, but by choice we have become friends.”

Although everyone certainly enjoyed the complimentary hot cocoa and fresh baked cookies served by Gerard and Lynn Donohue of JeJoJo Bagels and ate donuts

provided by Hilda Gonzales of White Castle, the true takeaway was good old fashioned holiday cheer, a sense of community and an unofficial start to what can be a wonderful but stressful time of year!

This Civic Organization believes this is one event that truly brings the community together and they look forward to many more years of hosting it.

As the night wrapped up, the younger kids were invited to take the microphone and sing their favorite Christmas Carols.

Diane’s final words were to wish all “a healthy, happy, safe and enjoyable holiday season.” She reminded all that “although nights are now darker, traffic is heavier and the pressure is on, we are all in this together.”

Avoid Surprise, Winterize (NAPSI)—As the weather gets colder, winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority.

The nonprofit Car Care Council recommends that motorists perform a sixpoint winter maintenance check of areas that are particularly affected by driving in rough weather.

“Harsh weather can stress out a vehicle, as well as its driver,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “A vehicle that’s properly prepared for the elements can help you avoid an unplanned road emergency

when the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse.”

Six-Point Vehicle Check 1. Battery—Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance.

Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it’s advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old.

2.

Antifreeze— Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however.

Surprisingly,

full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water.

3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked.

Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads.

4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop.

5.

Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car.

6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level

in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield.

In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit

with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.

The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.
