The program, which supports Scholastic’s annual Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive, invited staff to wear their cozy pajamas to work in exchange for donating a new pair of pajamas to the drive. The Connetquot Central School District has appointed Brigid Villareale as its new assistant superintendent for business and operations.

Ms. Villareale comes to Connetquot from the Hempstead Public School District, where she served as the assistant business administrator for the past two years. Under her supervision, she oversaw the planning, development and implementation of the district’s $221 million budget process which included overall budget strategy, alignment with the educational plan and prioritization of needs.

Additionally, she managed school business office operations including long range fiscal planning, accounting, purchasing, payroll, transportation, employee benefits, accounts payable and

audit preparation.

She also prepared and submitted all state reports with the appropriate departments including Every Student Succeeds Act Transparency Form, Tax Cap Form, SED Monitoring Surveys, Administrative Salary Disclosure and the Property Tax Report Card.

Prior to Hempstead, Ms. Villareale worked as the district clerk of BRIGID VILLAREALE the Hauppauge Public Schools System, where she spearheaded the System to Track and Account for Children, which ensured that all private placement costs were accurate.

She also prepared and coordinated all necessary documentation for board of education meetings, including personnel,

financial reports and administrative matters.

In addition, she served as a member of the policy committee, provided drafts and legal updates to the committee team and organized revised policies for board approval.

Ms. Villareale is also a dedicated member to multiple professional associations, including the Association of School Business Officials New York, the Nassau ASBO, and the New York State School Board Association.

She was the recipient of the 2019 New York School Business Official Leader of the Year Award from the Association of School Business Officials in New York and sits on the professional development committee for that association.

New Year’s celebrations can be traced back thousands of years to ancient Babylon. And as with many holidays with deep histories, traditions are the hallmark of many New Year’s celebrations. While many people perform these traditions by rote, it can be interesting to delve into the history behind various components of New Year’s celebrations.

BALL DROP While not everyone can venture to New York City’s famed Times Square to watch the ball drop in person, millions tune in around the world to watch it on television.

Original celebrations in New York centered around listening to the bells of Trinity Church ring at midnight, but the New Year’s Eve celebrations were later moved to the New York Times building in 1904. Fireworks were part of those celebrations, but hot ash and sparks falling on spectators led to a ban on fireworks, and event organizers needed another spectacle to draw crowds, according to PBS. Publisher Adolph Ochs asked his chief electrician Walter Palmer to create

RESOLUTIONS New Year’s resolutions can be traced to the Mesopotamians. Ancient Babylonians also made spoken resolutions during a 12-day-long New Year Festival. These resolutions were oaths made to the sitting or new king and were considered essential to keeping the kingdom in the gods’ favor. The Romans also had a similar tradition of swearing oath to royalty at the start of the year. Many of these traditions merged into modern resolution-making, according to Live Science.

Champagne, a sparkling wine from a specific region of France, was used in the baptism of the Frankish warrior Clovis, according to the Champagne Committee of France. Soon, champagne became a key part of religious events, coronations and soirees - as well as secular rituals that replaced formerly religious rituals, according to the book “When Champagne Became French” by Kolleen Guy. Champagne manufacturers eventually linked the bubbly to festive occasions with family, and New Year’s celebrations became another ideal time to pop the cork on a bottle.

On December 9, Sons of AMVETS Post 48 members gathered at Post 48 in Ronkonkoma to organize toys that would be donated to the Little Flower Children and Family Services and the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk.

AMVETS Post 48 Sons used fundraising monies to purchase these toys.

The Sons of AMVETS were assisted by AMVETS

Post 48 Ladies Auxiliary Members and AMVETS Members with the purchasing, organizing, and transporting the toys to those being serviced by these agencies.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of NY, is a non for profit charity servicing children, families and individuals with developmental disabilities across New York and Long Island.

The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk’s Mission is to promote a goal of self-sufficiency by broadening the minds of children, revitalizing communities and assisting families and children in need through the provision of services and to coordinate available Federal, State, Local and Private Resources.

The Princess of Lake Ronkonkoma Every nook and cranny of a town has a story to tell. Lake Ronkonkoma is no different. Historical preservationist Ellyn Okvist of the Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association visited the Connetquot Public Library on Wednesday, November 13 to share a notable piece of local history, the Princess of the Lake. A historical marker commemorates the tale of Native American Princess Tuskawanta of the Algonquin. It reads “legend says she claims one male each year to be with her at the bottom of the lake as she seeks her true love.”

Ellyn highlighted the passionate journey to honor the princess, our area’s Native American roots, and to celebrate the history of the local community. The Newton family planted five European Copper Beech Trees, transported from Scandinavia, to celebrate

the 200th Anniversary of the Pilgrim’s landing at Plymouth Rock. One of these trees rested on longtime resident Virginia Schutte’s property and was dying.

As local artist Todd Arnett takes over the story, he recalls telling Virginia that he would rather carve the tree first before its remains were turned into firewood.

When that time arrived, she requested that Todd create a sculpture of the Native American Princess with what remained of the tree. The Michigan native works on this labor of love in his spare time, primarily carving with a chainsaw.

He hopes to bring peace to the princess by giving her spirit a place to reside.

In June of 2019 the Heritage Association hosted the First Annual Princess of the Lake Festival and Artisan Showcase.

Drummer Rick Statler and Chief Medicine Bear shared their impressions

of the day. Rick Statler led a drum circle and Chief Medicine Bear performed a smudging, a healing for the Princess. From a shift in the winds, to the waters of Lake Ronkonkoma, they both shared their hope that through this commemoration that Princess Tuskawanta would now reside in the statue to become a “guardian of the lake.”

To conclude the evening’s program, Chief Medicine Bear gave an invocation and drummer Rick Statler led a traditional call and response style drum circle with verses written to honor the Princess. The unearthing of our history anchors us to our community, one that continues to grow.

Marine Is On A Mission The Marines live by the motto of never leaving anyone behind. For some that includes a dog they have rescued during deployment, and have bonded with. The loyalty from Captain Dave and his unit and the dog that they rescued goes both ways, and now his wish is to bring her back home to the United States with him when he returns soon. Guardians of Rescue have helped other military members pull off this same mission, and they are seeking public donations to help pull it off again.

“Captain Dave’s loyalty to Sox is like no other, and he believes in the idea of not leaving her behind,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We know that we can help bring Sox back to America to live out her life with him, but we need the public’s support, because it’s costly to do. We are grateful to be working with Nowzad shelter in Kabul, because without their assistance this pup would not have a chance of coming to America.”

Captain Dave is stationed in a remote area in Afghanistan. He is scheduled to come back home to the United States in early 2020. He can’t imagine leaving Sox behind because he loves

her. He first saw Sox when she was a puppy, finding her caught in concertina wire in their camp. He freed her, gave her food and water, and sent her on her way. However, Sox had different plans.

In the days that followed, Sox started coming back to their camp each day, feeling safe around the unit and seeking food and water. Some of the other men had even seen the dog being abused out on the streets. Soon, Sox began staying by their side all of the time, even tagging along on some of their missions. On a recent patrol, Sox ventured too far away from the unit and was whipped with a stick by a local. It was at that time that Captain Dave knew he could never leave her behind to fend for herself.

“The bond I have with Sox is something I didn’t expect, but I just can’t leave her behind,” says Captain Dave. “If I don’t bring her home with me I am afraid I’ll always regret it and wonder about what happened to her. I appreciate any assistance people can give in helping me to bring her home with me.”

Relocating a dog from the Middle East to America can be done, but it comes at a high cost. Along with paying fees to allow the dog to leave, there

Brookhaven’s Got Talent Student Art Show 70 residents attended the Town of Brookhaven Youth Board’s first “Brookhaven’s Got Talent Student Art Show.”

Students enrolled in seventh through twelfth grade were asked to submit summer-themed photos, paintings and/ or drawings through Brookhaven Town’s

website, and entries were accepted from late June through September 27.

In total, 19 submissions were received from 15 students. The event took place in the second-floor lobby at Brookhaven Town Hall, where prints of the students’ art work are currently displayed for residents to view.

Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “The goal behind this initiative was to recognize and encourage young, talented artists in Brookhaven Town.

We ended up having an intergenerational event where students were engaging with their peers, adults and seniors, sharing

details about their art. It is gratifying to see so many residents coming out on a cold, rainy October night to view the students’ exceptional work and encourage their artistic talents.”

Councilman Michael Loguercio, Town Board Liaison to the Brookhaven Youth

Bureau said, “The Youth Board did a great job of bringing the Brookhaven community together to celebrate the students’ art work.

It is encouraging to see students from school districts throughout Brookhaven Town participate. The large turnout and positive feedback we received
