Winter Wonderland Hundreds of students, along with their families, teachers, administrators and friends were recently amazed by the colors, lights and decorations outside of Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School during the second annual “Winter Wonderland” event. Santa Claus arrived promptly at 6 p.m. courtesy of the local fire department volunteers, as he set up his
welcome mat inside the OBMS courtyard, which was appropriately renamed the North Pole for the evening. Excited children, along with their parents, spoke to Santa about their year, made a few requests and took home treats prepared by his elves. Inside the “Wonderland,” entertainment was provided by Mrs. Claus’ storytelling, the OBMS Jazz Band and String Ensemble, the Roseland
Dancers, along with Jester Jim and magician Gary the Great. The Reindeer Café provided complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, while pretzels, hot dogs and pizza were available to purchase. Additionally, the indoor Santa’s Workshop provided opportunities for the children to have their faces painted, create colorful sand projects and work on a variety of craft activities. “The dedication and
vision of the PTA and community volunteers for this year’s ‘Wonderland’ exceeded even our own expectations,” said OBMS PTA President Raymond Carta. “The organization’s goal was to create that magical moment from days past where the entire neighborhood would turn out at the village square to enjoy the special atmosphere of the season with friends and family.”

Matthew’s Wish Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School had students, teachers and parents play games for a good cause during the school’s fourth annual Rock, Paper, Scissors Night. The event benefitted Matthew’s Wish, an organization whose mission is to give back to others. Matthew was a 13year old whose last wish was to fill an 18-wheeler with toys for hospitalized children before he passed away in 2011. With the love and support of family and friends, his mother made his dream a reality. Cherokee Street Elementary School Student Council adviser Ryan Cavanagh and Principal Jill Lahey, along with student council members, supported the organization this year by collecting toys and providing the community with a fun game night. “Over the last four years, the Cherokee Street School community has donated more than 1,400 brand new toys and games to be passed along to hospitalized children,” said Mr. Cavanagh. This year’s event in particular collected 300 new gifts which were donated to Matthew’s Wish at the nonprofit’s Parade of Toys event on December 9th. The winner of the Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament was fourthgrade student Jordyn DeMatteo.

HARMONY CAFÉ
Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)
on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. You may not know this, but the Canine Careers students at Islip Career Center offer free dog grooming services to veterans that receive therapy dogs through the Paws of War Program. Paws of War is a program that trains and places rescued dogs with U.S. military veterans suffering from the emotional effects of war. Dogs are washed and their coats are dried and conditioned, and their
nails are trimmed. Just take a look at Delilah, this pitbull mixed breed, enjoying her day at the Canine Career Dog Spa thanks to students Angelina, West Islip UFSD; Malachi (background) South Country CSD; and Dan, Middle Country CSD. Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs.

Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown
up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet. Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much. And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package. In everything, it’s the thought that counts. With that, sending thoughts to all of our readers for a healthy, happy holiday season. Here’s hoping you all receive everything on your wish list.

Students at Sachem High School East and North in the Sachem Central School District are learning about the skills needed to succeed in a multimilliondollar business as part of the district’s career and technical education cosmetology class. Putting lessons into practice, the students are not only learning trade skills but are putting them to use in their own salon, offering a plethora
of services to fellow students and staff. As part of the cosmetology class, the students practice techniques in hair coloring, cutting and styling, while also learning the intricacies of nail and makeup services. “The cosmetology class is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience,” said High School East senior Jessica Hennessy. “We are given the chance to explore multiple different areas of
cosmetology, which is a huge benefit.” Throughout the class, students can participate in workshops run by industry-leading professionals and gain practical career experience during multiple shadowing opportunities. After successful completion of the course requirements, the students are eligible to earn a New York State cosmetology license.

Introduction to Cooking students from Islip Career Center recently visited JT’s Café in Blue Point where they enjoyed some of the incredible meals offered at the restaurant, and had the opportunity to speak with the owner, Justin Tempelman, about the rigors of the restaurant business and what inspired
him to forge a career in the industry. “Speaking to Justin in his establishment provided my students with some valuable employment perspective,” said Chef Michael Frankson, the ESBOCES Introduction to Cooking teacher. “They were very interested in the hard work and dedication
that’s required in this business.” Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs, which may help them to gain entry-level employment is certain industries.
Celebrating 50 Years Chippewa Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently celebrated 50 years of education during a day filled with special activities remembering the past. The day began by recognizing past teachers and staff in attendance through special words by current Principal Patricia Aubrey before a ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony. A time capsule sealed in 1968 by former staff members was opened
and the contents displayed in the multipurpose room to showcase the preserved treasures from the past. Among the contents found within the capsule were old photographs of students and various documents displaying current trends of the time. Additionally, the day included several connections to the students’ social studies curriculum, as students were challenged to pick a past era and study what was popular during that
time. Students created comparison posters showcasing current trends and how they contrasted with ones of the past. The posters were displayed amongst the time capsule artifacts for the visitors to enjoy as they viewed the collection of items. Concluding the special day was a parade throughout the building led by past teachers and staff, followed by each kindergarten class dressed in holiday costumes.

During a recent visit to the Sachem Central School District’s middle schools, Sachem High School East and North students enrolled in the Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities class presented lessons regarding the dangers
associated with drug use to sixth-grade students. As part of the high school course, students are transformed into teachers, equipped with the skills to educate students on the dangers of drugs and the importance of making healthy choices
throughout life. Through the Too-GoodFor-Drugs curriculum, the high school students deliver a series of lessons as they periodically visit the district middle schools, delivering students valuable information to lead healthy lives.
Connetquot Cheer The Connetquot Central School District congratulates the Connetquot High School Marching Band and Color Guard for showcasing their immense talents in the 38th annual QVC West Chester Christmas Parade, held in West Chester, Pennsylvania and earning

Students from John Halloran’s science research class at Connetquot High School were named one of 255 state finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a program that encourages students to solve realworld issues in their community by utilizing their STEAM-based skills. A select group of Mr. Halloran’s science research students - Emily Anne Augulis, Sabah Bari, Biproprosad Das, Paige Savannah Dreher, Keith Richard Grant, Sarah Hussain, Atif Abbas Khan, Melissa Sena Oz and (Alex) Jia Xi Yeung - were chosen based on their proposal to use STEAM skills to address opioid addiction. In doing such, the students are in the process of developing software applications that integrate wearable technology to monitor and assist patients in the recovery from opioid addiction. As one of five state finalists in the New York, Mr. Halloran will receive a Samsung Chromebook to be utilized within the classroom. Additionally, Connetquot High School will now have the opportunity to advance in the competition for

Students enrolled in the after-school Computer Science Clubs at Edward J. Bosti and John Pearl Elementary schools are currently taking part in next generation activities and lessons in an effort to expand their STEM-based knowledge. At both schools, time is split between unplugged, hands-on activities such as the computer-coding based Ozobots and plugged activities like Code Studio
in the computer lab. Ozobots are small, programmable robots that make calculated movements based on drawn combinations of line sequences on paper. Both activities introduce the eager students to the ever-expanding field of computer coding, as they build their own sequences and familiarize themselves with the language necessary to become a successful programmer.
“One goal is for students to gain a deeper understanding of coding and the language of computers,” said Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Computer Science Club adviser Stephanie Gozaloff. “Additionally, students are working on increasing their critical thinking and problemsolving skills by becoming more creative thinkers along the way.”
Celebrating Staff & Students The Bayport-Blue Point School District recognized both students and staff for their accomplishments during its December 5th board of education meeting. Student representatives of Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Leo’s Club were commended for their efforts in the Blue Point-Bayport Lions/ Leo’s Clubs’ annual food drive. These students volunteered on a recent Sunday afternoon to stand in front of King
Kullen of Blue Point and encouraged the shoppers to donate nonperishable food items to those in need of assistance in their own community. Due to the initiative, the group collected enough food to fill up the back of a pick-up truck. Additionally, three teachers throughout the district were recognized as Teachers of the Month based not only on their excellent teaching methods, but for their ability to seamlessly connect with the students
and ensure that their education comes first. Congratulations to Sylvan Avenue Elementary School second-grade teacher Sara Desmond, Blue Point Elementary School thirdgrade teacher Christine Brand and Academy Street Elementary School kindergarten teacher Melissa Zaleski for being named Teachers of the Month for September, October and November, respectively.

Community Ambulance Company is excited to celebrate a great milestone for one of their most dedicated members. December 18th, 2017 will mark exactly 50 years since Donald Hester was sworn in as a member of the department. Community Ambulance Company was only 17 years old at the time Don joined the department, and over the years he has seen the agency grow from a small garage with Cadillac ambulances to the current modern facility that handles over 4,600 alarms per year. Don has been an active riding member for his entire 50 years of membership, and to this day he still volunteers for a weekly 12 hour overnight shift as a driver. He has responded to the side of thousands of patients during his career, making him a real life hero. In addition to his weekly shift on the ambulance, Don has a tradition of volunteering on New Year’s Eve to be on the last alarm of the year and the first alarm of the New Year. In between those alarms, he has become famous amongst the membership for marking the stroke of midnight by banging his gong outside and making everyone at headquarters eat pickled herring to bring good luck in the New Year. Don never misses a meeting or event for Community Ambulance Company, and has served as a Crew Chief and member of the Board of Directors. When not answering alarms, Don will often

Honored for Service be seen sitting in the crew room regaling newer members with stories of how the ambulance company used to be. Outside of Community Ambulance Company, Don has also been extremely active as a member of the Boy Scouts as well as the Rotary Club. He and his wife Judy, to whom he has been married for 55 years, have even opened up their home over the years to exchange students from all over the world through the Rotary Exchange Program.
According to Community Ambulance Company Chief of Department James MacDonell, “Don is an inspiration and role-model to our newer members. He has shown for 50 years that his commitment and selflessness are unmatched both on and off the ambulance. Don and his wife Judy have dedicated their lives to serving others, and he is truly an asset to our organization.” On Monday, December 11th, 2017, Don Hester will be recognized for his years of service by Community Ambulance Company at their monthly department meeting. At that time, he will be surrounded by his friends and family to celebrate the time he has given and to usher in his 50th year of membership with the department. The Community Ambulance Company of Sayville has been providing emergency medical services to the residents of Bayport, Bohemia, Oakdale, Sayville and West Sayville for the past 67 years.
