A Season For Giving Throughout the South Country Central School District, students spent the month of November collecting food for those in need.

Under the direction of teachers Jeremy Freeman and Erika Hawthorne, the Bellport Middle School Student Council collected nonperishable food items from Oct. 15-Nov. 20.

The food was then sent to Pastor Mike Caiazzo at the Lighthouse Mission to add to the organization’s collection of food for the community.

At Brookhaven Elementary School, the students’ reach had a global appeal. After Halloween, students donated their uneaten candy, which was then sent to military troops abroad.

The Bellport High School Student Council also held its annual Thanksgiving Drive. This year, the organization collected more than 900 nonperishable items for those in need.

Studying The Spanish Language As part of Connetquot Central School District’s commitment to providing students with enriched learning opportunities, third grade students across all elementary schools have the chance to learn a second language as part of the district’s Foreign Language in the Elementary School program.

The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is celebrating the holiday season with its “Home for the Holidays” promotion, featuring free pet adoptions throughout

the month of December.

Each adoption includes free neuter or spay, vaccinations, microchip, license, heartworm test, flea and other tests. The normal adoption fees are $137 for a dog and $140 for a cat. Pictured left to right are “Fiyero,” “Superman,” “Simba” and “Penelope.”

Athletes Promote Positivity Members of the Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club promoted positivity, perseverance and resiliency during a recent visit with fifth grade students at the Cherokee Street Elementary School.

“Athletes Helping Athletes had their introductory visit for the 2019-2020 school year,” said Alaina Bennett, who advises the AHA with high school guidance counselor Philip Clark.

“The visit to the fifth grade classrooms provided an opportunity for the Cherokee students to feel comfortable with their new high school friends.”

During the event, the high school athletes shared personal stories about the importance of becoming involved in extracurricular activities such as music, band, various clubs, as well as sports, and the valuable life lessons they learned by doing so. Each of the visitors talked about how they learned to believe in themselves, and continued to work to reach their goals.

The athletes will be meeting with elementary students throughout the year, and their next visit will cover the important topic of bullying, sportsmanship and civility in January. Each of their

visits will be centered on the themes of promoting confidence, leadership and value-based messages.

The Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club is the largest in Nassau and Suffolk counties. It consists of more than 60 serviceminded students who pledge to stay away from alcohol and drugs, and to share their experiences with elementary school students.

Connetquot’s AHA Club partners with Molloy College, and its advocate/mentors consist of caring professionals, including major league athletes.

TWO COCA-COLA SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS NAMED Congratulations to two students from the Class of 2020—Tara Donohue and Alexa Vargas—for being chosen as Semifinalists in the 2019-2020 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. Both girls are among 1,928 semi-finalists out of 93,000 applicants and could win a $20,000 scholarship. While their outstanding leadership, academic achievements, and dedication to their community have advanced them through the process thus far, Alexa and Tara are required to complete a second application. This involves providing greater details about their school, community, volunteer, and employment activities along with recommendations and transcripts. Once they complete this requirement, their Semifinalist applications will be reviewed by the Coca-Cola Program Reading Committee in January. After this review, 250 students will advance as Regional Finalists, with 150 becoming Coca-Cola Scholars. What an honor! Good luck,Tara and Alexa!

Athletes Assist Younger Students On Nov. 4, the Connetquot High School’s Athletes Helping Athletes Club introduced the program’s newest members during a fun and inspirational meeting in the school’s cafeteria.

Throughout the school year, students enrolled in Athletes Helping Athletes visit each of the district’s seven elementary schools to talk to fifth graders about their own experiences of transitioning to new buildings throughout the

years. The AHA members also work with the students in a variety of leadership and team-building activities, in addition to explaining the many advantages of participating in extracurricular programs, such as fine arts, music and sports.

Seniors Are In The Zone Connetquot High School seniors Edward Sollazzo and Samantha Lankowicz have been named 2019 Suffolk Zone winners by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Nominated by their physical education teacher Jessica Perry, these

students are exceptional talents both in and outside of the classroom. As Suffolk Zone winners, these students were recognized

by NYSAHPERD for their achievements in physical education as well as for leadership, character and academics.

Only one male and one female student from each

Suffolk County school may win the Suffolk Zone Award each year. Eligible students must have earned high grades in their physical education classes and maintain an overall superior GPA. They were recognized at a dinner in December.

A Step Back In Time Cherokee Street Elementary School fourth grade students stepped back in time as they recently celebrated a Colonial Day. Inspired by their classroom lessons, the students dressed in EXPIALIDOCIOUS! - A Supercalifragilistic Sayville Middle School Production of traditional colonial attire Mary Poppins JR was Expialidocious! project, the students worked in the library to research different colonial occupations. They then crafted informative paragraphs describing the products or services provided by the various trades, the tools used for the job and how the trade was important to the Colonial village.

Additionally, the students designed their own

Colonial signs, just like the ones that were often hung outside each shop.

During the presentation, the individuals shared their research with all who were in attendance. At the end of the presentation, all were invited to join together to enjoy some traditional Colonial food, including corn cakes and cider.

ROTARY SOUTH SHORE 4 CLUB MEETING - On December 4, 2019 the first ever Rotary South Shore 4 Club (Patchogue, Sayville, Bayshore and Bellport) meeting took place at the Blue Goose, West Main St., Patchogue. Over 84 Rotarians and friends attended the event. Much was discussed about the environmental quality of our bays and how Rotarians can come together to combine their talents and resources to help preserve Long Island South Shore bays and seashores.
