Waverly Students Plant Peace Promises

Students at Waverly Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District planted peace promises around the building’s grounds. Students at each grade level received daffodil bulbs with a paper peace promise attached. They wrote pledges of things they would do to make for

a positive school year. For example, some students pledged to give other compliments, be kind, use positive words and pick up garbage. Pre-K through fourth graders planted the front of the building along Waverly Avenue and fifth graders planted near the main entrance, around the Sue Finnerty Memorial

Garden.

In the springtime, these daffodils will bloom to beautify the school, but also to remind students of their peace pledges. The schoolwide activity brings the building together while creating a positive school environment and culture of caring.

Holiday Harmonies From Festive Flutes!

The Long Island Flute Club is pleased to continue its tradition of presenting its annual Holiday Concerts. Once again the Flute Club will be presenting two concerts, one at each end of the Long Island community. Both concerts will feature a variety of seasonal classics that are guaranteed to put you in the spirit of the season. The sixteenmember flute ensemble will feature all members of the flute family from piccolo to bass flute. The ensemble, directed by Lauren Osnato will play a variety of festive classics such as “The Nutcracker Suite” and “Let it Snow” to “Sleigh Ride” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It is a holiday celebration for children of all ages!

The Suffolk County Concert will be Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 3:00 pm at the United Methodist Church of Lake Ronkonkoma. This will be the thirteenth time the Long Island Flute Club will present a holiday concert

at this charming church in Lake Ronkonkoma. The picturesque church is located at 792 Hawkins Avenue, in Lake Grove. The concert is free of charge. In the spirit of the holiday season, they will be taking up a collection to donate to the ALS Association.

The Nassau County Concert will be Sunday, December 11, 2022, at 2:00 pm in the Red Ballroom of Old Westbury Gardens.

The Gold Coast-era Mansion will be decorated for the holidays, and there will even be an appearance from Santa Claus himself. The concert is free with admission to Old Westbury Gardens.

The Holiday Flute Choir is made up of members of the Long Island Flute Club. The group is a mixture of players of all ages who play at an advanced level. Tis The Season For Giving

On Monday, November 21, 2022, Noelle Lambert and The Bryn Elliott Team launched a Holiday Donation Drive, benefitting the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, an organization that strives to end homelessness on Long Island, and to alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping others, but more specifically assisting the homeless is really important to me,” said Noelle, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “When you strip away all the excess and get down to the basics - the minimum that one should have in order to put their best foot forward every day - what remains is a home, along with food, and the like. There are countless people struggling and facing homelessness right now on Long Island and it just feels like the right thing to do to help them.”

The drive will run through December 19th and has five drop-off locations throughout Long Island. “This year the organization is desperately in need of non perishable food and personal care items,” said Bryn Elliott, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with The Bryn Elliott Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “They’re also looking for clothing, socks and winter coats. We’re hopeful that this drive will make a difference by helping people who need it; especially during the toughest time of the year to be homeless.”

Brookhaven Town Celebrates Bellport High School Students

Ten Bellport High School students were recently recognized by the Town of Brookhaven as part of the town’s ninth annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.

guest speakers and lessons on how to live a healthy lifestyle parallels Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s largest drug-use prevention campaign.

Brianna’s poem, “Let’s Taco-Bout Staying Drug Free,” was about staying healthy. In the poem she says, “Say no to drugs

and alcohol and say yes to tacos.” As the winner, Brianna was invited to read her poem to the school community over the loudspeaker.

Experiential Gifts

Shopping is foremost on the minds of many people come the holiday season. When considering loved ones and acquaintances while making holiday shopping lists, tangible gifts, such as clothing or items for the home, may be the first things that come to mind. However, experiential gifts also merit consideration. Experiential gifts are those that focus

on experiences rather than items. These can include anything from a horseback riding adventure to a spa day to concert tickets to getting behind the wheel of a race car. Experiential gifts can be tailored to people’s interests. A study by researchers at San Francisco State University showed people tend to realize greater well-being from life experiences and

consider them to be a better way to spend their money. Overall satisfaction tends to be greater with gifted experiences than with material things. Furthermore, the Harris Group found that 72 percent of millennials actually want to spend more money on experiences rather than things.

Connetquot’s Middle School And High School Students Stand United For Healthy Choices

Connetquot High School, Ronkonkoma Middle School and Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School took a stand against drugs during United We Stand for a Drug-Free Community Week on Oct. 24-28. This special week parallels Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s largest drug-use prevention campaign, and focuses on the various ways students can make healthy choices and live a clean lifestyle.

Guest speaker Larry Glenz and author of “Forgiving Kevin” relayed

to high school students the downward spiral of living and dealing with a child addicted to opioids. He described his son’s rehabilitation, recovery and relapse as being similar to a “hamster wheel” and every relapse like “a death.” Glenz offered students several lessons: Only love matters; Forgiveness is the key to happiness; and You must have a connection to a higher power.

Ronkonkoma and Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School students heard a more upbeat program

with Nick “Sunshine” Tokman of the television series “Deadliest Catch.” His program called “I Am Captain: My Future is Bright” focused on his journey to becoming a fisherman on the boat in “Deadliest Catch,” even though he had no experience. Tokman shared invaluable lessons, including advice telling students to remove distractions to allow them to accomplish goals and to not allow money to take them away from those they love or from fulfilling goals.

Pattersqaush Creek Invasive Removal & Native Planting

Invasive species are choking out the native flora in our woodlands and wetlands. You can see this in Mastic Beach, all along Pattersquash Creek where the multiflora rose is crowding out the local summersweet and highbush blueberry. Japanese honeysuckle, Japanese barberry and morning glory — all invasive species — weave an impenetrable

bramble that cause the native serviceberry and chokeberry to struggle. Invasive plants add no value to our local ecology whereas native plants help nourish our soil and support a host of bugs, birds and mammals important to the local ecology, according to Mike Lovell, a local volunteer.

On Saturday, December 10 from 9 AM – 3 PM, Mastic Beach Creek Defender Walt

Meshenberg will be leading up an invasive plant removal along the Pattersquash Creek and replacing them with native plants. This project is being done in collaboration with the Pattersquash Creek Civic Association, the Mastic Beach Conservancy, and volunteers in accordance with DEC guidelines. All volunteers are welcome to join in this expansive effort. This is a muddy job so

please dress appropriately for muck – waders or tall waterproof boots, if you have them, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty!

The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have five service areas:

Children & Youth: Their Children & Youth services work deeply with children who are victims of child abuse and neglect or who are involved in the foster care system or child trafficking. They provide supervised visitation between noncustodial parents and their children, promote child passenger safety and offer mentors for at-risk youth.

Family & Community: EAC Network’s Family and Community programs help individuals pay bills, resolve family and business conflicts and navigate through obstacles that hinder selfsufficiency.

Senior & Nutrition Services: EAC Network is a provider of Meals on Wheels. They act as guardians for seniors, as well as mentally and/or physically incapacitated individuals, who are unable to manage aspects of daily life on their own. Their senior centers provide warm meals, exercise and social interaction to local seniors. They also offer technology classes as well as trained companions to relieve caregivers.

Vocational Services: Their Vocational Services offer a variety of programs that provide participants with skills to obtain and retain employment, particularly with at-risk populations.

Behavioral Health & Criminal Justice Services: They offer Behavioral Health programs that work in tandem with the criminal justice system to help

individuals

issues obtain treatment. They also offer programs for Anger Management, Community Service and educational intervention for domestic violence offenders, and more.

Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they serve over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County!

There are so many ways that you can get involved with EAC Network, whether it be through an internship or volunteer position, attending an event, making a donation or fundraising. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more about how you can make a difference in your community.
