The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

John Theissen Children’s Foundation is Celebrating Their

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

eventbrite.com/jtcf. Additionally, you can get involved with this Foundation in various different ways. You can donate a toy to their Annual Toy & Fund Holiday Drive, going on now through December 22nd , (please visit www. jtcf.org for dropoff locations) and you can donate monetarily at www. jtcf.org or by mailing a check to John Theissen Children’s Foundation, 1881 Wantagh Avenue, Wantagh, NY 11793 to support their mission. You can also volunteer by organizing your own toy drive, helping at fundraising events or distributing flyers. Lastly, this holiday season you can provide a child with a specific item that he/she requested. If you wish to do this, please contact John at John@JTCF.org. This holiday season and always, let us count our blessings, give to those in need and make a difference in the world. For more information about this Foundation, please call 516.679.5098 or email John@JTCF. org.

PORT JEFFERSON STATION, NY (November 26, 2019) - New York Imaging Specialists welcomes Varghese Cherian, MD, to its group of boardcertified radiologists. Dr. Cherian will be practicing at New York Imaging Specialists’ newest facilities at 1500 Route 112, Building 2A in Port Jefferson Station and 640 County Road 39 in Southampton. Dr. Cherian became interested in medicine during childhood because of his mother’s influence. “She was a nurse--the stories my mother shared about her clinical experiences, and her commitment to the care of her patients really compelled me to undertake a career in medicine,” said Dr. Cherian. “I was also curious to learn more about the intricacies of the human body and to understand how it functions.” Dr. Cherian firmly believes joining New York Imaging Specialists is a unique opportunity to provide unparalleled patient care. “I wanted to join New York Imaging Specialists because it is the quintessential model

Police Athletic League Division I Champions On November 17th the Connetquot Youth Football Organization (CYFO) ‘Tbirds’ defeated their Sayville rivals in the championship game of the Police Athletic League (PAL) Division I (U13) 2019 final. Connetquot, which completed an undefeated season (10-0) outscored Sayville by a score of 2410 ‘under the lights’ at the PAL field in Holtsville, NY. While the season’s success and championship

outcome were total team efforts, Mike Buttino’s three touchdowns, and Nick Pepitone’s single score proved too much for Sayville in the PAL final. The night before the championship game the coaches arranged for a team dinner and a special guest speaker who talked about his life in the NFL. Amityville’s Gary Lee Brown talked to the team about their season, and the importance of

teamwork, fundamentals and confidence. Brown would play three seasons for the Green Bay Packers while earning a Super Bowl Championship ring in 1996. The players were excited to talk to Gary, marvel at his championship ring, and listen to his advice. Congratulations to the players and coaches of the CYFO ‘Tbirds’ on an outstanding season they can all be proud of.

Fall Cleanup and Grounds Beautification Day Skills Unlimited, Inc. (Skills), an affiliate of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), offering vocational training programs and Behavioral Health services for adults with disabilities, welcomed volunteers from JM2 Architecture to their

Oakdale Headquarters on Friday, November 1st. The volunteers worked Skills staff to teach individuals with special needs about raking, mulching, and planting seasonal flowers all while helping to beautify the grounds around Skills. “I’d like to thank all of

the volunteers from JM2 Architecture for giving of themselves,” said Robert S. Budd, CEO, FREE. “The more opportunities our individuals have to learn from dedicated professionals, the more marketable they are to employers,” he continued.

Artist Frank J. Loehr Featured Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce that the works of Ronkonkoma artist Frank J. Loehr will be on view at Apple Bank, 91 Route 111, Smithtown, through January 11, 2020. The exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular bank hours. Primarily a self-taught artist, Frank has studied the work of other artists, painting and sketching countless pictures. “While I respect forms of abstract art, representational art is my preference. My appreciation of classical art has inspired me to copy old masters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt,

Greuze and Vouet. These efforts have helped a great deal in my understanding of painting and applying it to my current work. I paint in oils on canvas or panel. My goals are to achieve realistic effects in portrait, landscape or still life and for the painting to engage the viewer.” Frank, born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, was educated at SUNY Farmingdale, N.Y. After serving as a U.S. Army Paratrooper in the 2 /509th Airborne Infantry, he pursued a career in the Aerospace industry for Grumman Aircraft and later Northrop Grumman. Working and raising a family did not leave much

time for art. Frank, now retired has more time for art and paints for fun and relaxation. His current focus is on portrait and figurative work, but also enjoys landscape and plein air painting. He has worked in all mediums, but oil paint is his favorite and he prefers realism over all other styles. Frank has exhibited in juried and group shows across long Island. STAC is grateful to Apple Bank for its continued support of culture in our communities Smithtown Township Arts Council is a 501(c) (3) NotFor-Profit Organization

Celebrating 50 Years Of Learning On Oct. 18, members of the Sachem community gathered for a celebratory event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Cayuga Elementary School and their commitment to excellence in education during that time. They daylong event began with congratulatory welcome addresses by building principal Matthew Wells; Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham; the mayor of Lake Grove, Robert J. Scottaline; and retired Cayuga teacher Susan

Heppeler. Additionally, several current students shared their reasons why Cayuga is a special place to them. As the events continued, building retirees and guests were led on studentguided tours throughout the school where they learned interesting facts about Cayuga Elementary. In the cafetorium, guests enjoyed performances by members of the High School North chorus who were Cayuga alumni. As the chorus members performed, guests viewed

an expansive slideshow of photos from the past and present. To conclude the day’s celebration, a time capsule from 1969 was opened to reveal interesting items from the past that included a class yearbook, school assignments and tape recordings from past students. Current Cayuga students carried on the time capsule tradition by adding their own items to the capsule, to be opened again in 50 years.

STUDENTS SHOW APPRECIATION - Out of the kindness of their hearts, four fifth-grade students from Edward J. Bosti Elementary School took it upon themselves to show appreciation for the school’s custodial staff as they dubbed Oct. 30 “Custodian Appreciation Day.” Due to the efforts of Lucas Harvin, Mason Beatty, Kaan Kaya and Gabriella Innace, a poster was created which would be signed by the entire school to show that they appreciate all of the duties that custodians Dylan Baumann, Nick Haskin, Mike Johnson, Dan Lefurgy and Justin Maas perform for the school on a daily basis. CELEBRATING WORLD KINDNESS DAY - Cherokee Elementary School fifth graders in Donna Barclay’s class wore bright matching yellow T-shirts and celebrated World Kindness Day by practicing random acts of kindness. Students Say “No” To Strangers Students from Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently welcomed Patrick Chierichella of the Rose Brucia Educational Foundation who spoke to students about informative strategies on avoiding strangers.

During the presentation, Mr. Chierichella and his staff talked to the students about being aware of their surroundings, who they interact with and how to make decisions that will ultimately keep them safe. Using a series of engaging skits and characters, students participated

in strategies that would minimize the chances of interacting with a stranger. Founded by Matthew J. Barbis after a tragic event, the Rose Brucia Safety Awareness program focuses on educating elementary-level students on the concepts of awareness, safety and trust.

Celebrating Decades Of Learning To help commemorate the 90th anniversary of the dedication of the Blue Point Elementary School building and all of the memories it harbors, the Bayport-Blue Point School District hosted a spectacular anniversary celebration on Oct. 25. After a stunning display of musicianship courtesy of the Bayport-Blue Point High School Jazz Band and a reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance by a number of Blue Point Elementary School students, BayportBlue Point Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy P. Hearney took to the podium to address the hundreds of attendees. “As you know, Blue Point Elementary School is now a K-5 building, consisting of roughly 230 students,” said Dr. Hearney. “But, it is much more than that; it is a place our students can go not only to learn and be challenged, but grow individually, socially and emotionally as well.” Additionally, Blue Point Elementary School Principal and Energy Bus

Advocate Tara Falasco was in attendance to thank everyone for their participation. “The teachers and I love being a part of this incredible history, in such a special school,” said Ms. Falasco. “Our goal that is in 10, 20, or even 90 years, you still have fond memories of Blue Point Elementary School, and all of us as well.” Multiple local and regional politicians were also in attendance to recognize Blue Point Elementary School as an

institution of excellence, as they presented Dr. Hearney with proclamations declaring it as such. As a means of reflecting on their fond memories of their time spent at the school, Blue Point Historical Society Members Dennis McCarthy and Joe Montheith were on hand to address the crowd. The gentlemen were joined in reminiscing by current fifth grade student Ava Phillips, along with Bayport-Blue Point High School senior and former Blue Point Elementary

student Elizabeth Auwaerter. At the conclusion of the dedication celebration, community members were invited into the school’s gymnasium where numerous pieces of memorabilia pertaining to the school’s history were on display for all to see. Included in the exhibit were class photographs dating back to decades ago, year books from throughout the years, along with preserved diplomas and report cards.

FINANCIALLY-SMART STUDENTS - In an effort to reinforce valuable real-world skills at a young age, Connetquot High School students from the National Business Honor Society presented the Junior Achievement program, “More than Money,” to the fifth-grade students at John Pearl Elementary School. During their time spent in the building, the upperclassmen shared helpful financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills with the students by means of a lecture and a supplementary activity. At the conclusion of their lesson, the students were presented with certificates of achievement for their successful completion of the program.
