Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain?

Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to

observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money.

In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table.

It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather

than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. Gift giving is meant to be an expression of appreciation for those we love, a token of thoughtfulness… not a source of stress and aggravation. The second it becomes that is the moment you need to pause and reevaluate your approach.

So as you enjoy your Thanksgiving dinners gathered around the table with your families and friends, savor the moment.

And as you embark on your shopping journey, be it Friday, Saturday, Monday, Christmas Eve or any time in between, take that same sentiment with you.

On November 10th, Brendan McCurdy and Bob Draffin, Directors, Friends of Bradstock, presented a check in the amount of $12,000 to Kevin Spellman, Board President, Camp PaQua-Tuck, at the camp’s board meeting.

With this check, Bradstock has raised a total of over $42,000 for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in the past four years. The money was raised for Camp Pa-QuaTuck from a portion of the ticket sales from Bradstock XXI, which took place on August 30th and August 31st.

Bradstock is a two-day music festival featuring musical acts performing

the best of Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz music. The event also featured poetry reading, a 5K trail run, and overnight camping.

The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan — who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing in October 2011 — was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21

with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education.

Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cookouts, swimming and boating.

SUFFOLK ZONE WINNERS - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Interim Principal Dr. Richard Shear recently announced the winners of the 2014-2015 Suffolk Zone Physical Education Award to high school seniors Anna Agnes and Brian Kissmer. Committing To College After widely successful high school athletic careers, Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors Sal Geraci and Annalise Martin have signed National Letters of Intent to play at and attend two Long Island colleges this fall.

Geraci, a catcher for the Phantoms award-winning

baseball team, will attend LIU Post. The advanced placement student has been playing the sport since the age of 13 and is looking forward to continuing to compete as a Pioneer next year. At the university he aspires to major in either accounting or psychology.

Martin, an integral member of the defensive

line on the BBP lacrosse team, will attend Hofstra University. She is an active member of the school’s National Honor Society and volunteers as a safe school ambassador. Martin is planning to major in athletic training while at Hofstra.

Honoring Veterans Throughout the Bayport-Blue Point School District students and staff members took time to pause and honor the nation’s veterans during special ceremonies and events this November.

During their schoolwide assembly, Academy Street Elementary School focused on the meaning behind

the national holiday and several important facts surrounding the day.

Students learned about the mission of the Honor Flight, an organization that transports veterans to the WWII memorial in Washington D.C., while several students spoke about the meaning behind the national holiday and

each branch of the military.

Sharing Reasons To Be Thankful As the holiday season approaches, students and staff members throughout the Bayport-Blue Point School District are working to give back to the surrounding community.

James Wilson Young Middle School student council coordinated a twoweek food drive for the

Our Lady of Snow food pantry and Patchogue Soup Kitchen. With the support of all participants, the school collected nearly 2,000 non-perishable food items for the cause.

Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Interact Club also coordinated a nonperishable food drive. The

items collected during this program were sent to the Sayville Food Pantry and the Our Lady of Snow food pantry.

The homeroom that collected the most items, at each school and per grade level, was rewarded with a bagel breakfast.

Engaging In Conversation

Filling the school cafeteria, Bayport-Blue Point High School students and several staff members engaged in a meaningful discussion of current politics as they took part in this year’s Issues Forum.

The event, which focuses on a different topic each year, centered on the current state of the union, mid-term elections, as well as foreign and domestic policy. This year’s panel

consisted of seniors Sarah Barsch and Brooke Schultz, juniors Caroline Feustel and Matt Fish, humanities chairperson and program coordinator John Limperatos and social studies teacher Sean Meade. Fielding questions from moderator and school English teacher Matt McMullan, the panel shared their individual viewpoints and commented on a number

of current events.

The event not only served as a mechanism to inspire outside discussion of classroom history topics, but also as a fundraiser for a senior scholarship in honor of former teacher and New York State Assemblyman Paul E. Harenberg. Over the past four events, the Issues Forum has raised more than $10,000 for this cause.

Band Of Brothers

The Band of Brothers has been hard at work at South Country School, raising both money and awareness for pediatric cancer patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. During the month of October, Special Education teachers Mr. Shea and Mr. Treglia, and Art teacher Mr. Pfaffe, spearheaded various fundraising efforts for this very worthy cause.

These three dedicated teachers, along with Mr. Martinich, a Social Studies

teacher at Bay Shore High School, are part of “Mustaches for Kids,” a grassroots fundraising effort based out of Long Beach. Mr. Shea, Mr. Treglia and Mr. Pfaffe sponsored Jeans For A Cause over several Fridays this month at South Country School.

They also sold creative pins at South Country’s Harvest Fun Night.

Proceeds from South Country’s very imaginative pumpkin decorating contest also went into the donation pot. All of these

activities, combined with other generous donations, have netted a whopping $1,750 for young cancer patients. This is the third year that these caring teachers have inspired people to donate to this very important cause.

These teachers’ thick mustaches and funky mustache suits have brought smiles to those who walk the halls, all the while raising a truly amazing amount of money for a very special group of children.

Showing Appreciation On Monday, November 10th, Mr. James Williams, Principal of Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School, welcomed three veteran members of the U.S. Army who came to share their love of the service, and America. Invited by teachers Cathy Mongiello and Donna Barclay, these experienced soldiers spent time talking about their lives and skills, then answered questions the students had prepared.

Staff Sargeant Roldan, a Brooklyn native, now living on Long Island is a 19 year veteran with a child that attends Cherokee.

Joining Roldan were Sargeants First Class Leaman, from Tacoma, Washington, and Rivera who is originally from the Bronx.

The three have a combined 63 years of experience in the military, and currently serve together in a transportation unit.

Each of these brave veterans talked about their early lives, and what prompted them to think about military

Sayville students and staff at Lincoln Avenue elementary school found one solution this year for too much leftover Halloween candy.

They participated in the Halloween Candy BuyBack Program, sponsored by local dentists, whose goal is to get “some of the candy off the streets,” by paying $1 for every pound of candy a child brings to the office.

These dentists have

partnered up with Operation Gratitude by shipping all the candy donated, along with toothbrushes, to the troops abroad in their Operation Gratitude care packages.

“In addition, the Lincoln Ave. students wrote personalized thank you cards to the troops,” Physical Education teachers Gary Jensen and Beth Bolger explained. “As a school, we traded in our Halloween candy for cash

On November 15th, twenty-two teams — including two pre-rookie teams — took part in the 3rd Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational at Half Hollow Hills High School West. The event was presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and the Half Hollow Hills School District.

High school students used the same robots they built for the 2014 Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics through Concerned Dental Competition. DAY AT THE OPERA - Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Elementary School’s music students recently performed an opera rendition of the story of Hansel & Gretel to an audience of classmates and faculty members. Students wore masks, and performed pantomimed movements as the music teacher, Mrs. Lauren Isleman read the story during the school’s ‘Opera’ unit. As part of a yearly program to help students develop appreciation for the arts and music, Mrs. Lauren Isleman introduced students to basic Opera and reenactment through story-telling.
