The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Twenty-Nine (329) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the more than nine hundred (900) students in eight (8) NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than one-third of the total number of students selected for All State.

Approximately nine hundred (900) students from high schools across New York State will perform in eight ensembles, and professional development related to music education will be offered to approximately 1,200 attendees. Several school ensembles will be featured, and Glenn Nierman, President of

the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) will deliver the keynote address.

NYSSMA’s featured artist will be Triton Brass.

Members of this exciting Internationally-renown musical quintet has been artists-in-residence at both the Tanglewood Institute and The Boston Conservatory, where each has served as on the faculty.

An Ode to My Human By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Tis the time of year to be thankful, and I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Human, as I’ve been told by many fans that I am far too tough on her, what with my lack of fancy accommodations and inconsistent feeding schedule. I suppose I have been a bit harsh in my criticisms. Us bettas tend to have one-track minds, you know.

In truth, I do appreciate the love and attention she shows me – and she has been better of late with notifying me when dinner is going to be delayed. Speaking of, I hear there’s a large meal coming up – a Thanksgiving, I believe it’s called – where humans

gather ‘round to eat a large stuffed bird. What a disturbing concept. I sure hope there’s no fish on the menu!

I do hope I get an invite and my very own place setting though. Day after day, I watch my human unload groceries, chop vegetables, prepare dinner… and then it disappears into the dining room, never to be seen again. All that food, and no leftovers for Buddy? Maybe if I sit at the table and stare at their plates, someone will drop a morsel into my bowl.

One can only hope.

There I go again, with my culinary obsession. Tiny brain, eyes-bigger-thanstomach. Typical fish. But seriously, a sincere thanks to all my loyal followers who constantly write in to my

human with fan mail, asking about my status and wishing me well. Your interest in the musings of a tiny finned creature are appreciated.

Nine months and still going strong!

Guess I should start working on my Christmas list… maybe a larger bowl, a small castle, some fun foliage to frolic in, a leafy hammock to sleep in… Is anyone writing this stuff down? Oh, and maybe a small finned friend to play with? As long as they’re not too fancy and colorful, that is… we can’t have any other creatures stealing too much of my Human’s attention.

On October 27th, Fairfield School, also known as Massapequa Avenue School, turned ninety. The fifth and sixth grade gathered together and learned about our school and how special it truly is. At the end of the ceremony, the historical society unveiled an historical marker.

Some things I learned about the early days of our school are: there weren’t houses surrounding our school like today; there were open fields with cows. I also learned the kids didn’t ride on the bus to school; they walked, rode a bike or road in a carriage pulled by a horse, if they were lucky. Fairfield School only had one room that held multiple grades. The last thing I learned was a classroom could have up to 30 children but only have one teacher.

In the 1920’s, Sebastian Hilton invented a contraption that changed the life of many children. This contraption was invented in Chicago, where Sebastian and his mathematical father lived. Mr. Hilton invented the jungle gym! Sebastian’s father wanted to build a play structure that kids could play on and learn about x, y and z coordinates at the same time. This invention is important because the jungle gym is an object enjoyed by many children. I can connect to the invention of the jungle gym because every time I go to the park, I play on the three dimensional figure and it entertains many kids.

In the 1920’s, the stock market crashed and many people lost all their life savings.

As a result of this, people

started to live in Hoovervilles.

People made houses out of boxes and other scrap material they found. Hoovervilles were found all over the country, but some major Hoovervilles were found in St.Louis, Missouri, Seattle and Washington. This event took place in the 1920’s and ended in 1929. This event is important because many people were homeless for many years because of the stock market. I can connect to this because whenever I go to the city, I see homeless people living in cardboard boxes and this reminds me of Hoovervilles.

As you can see, the 1920’s was a challenging time because of the crash in the stock market.

This major event will be put down in history just like our school was on October 27th.

Third prize: Colin West, a Ph.D. candidate at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook (YITP), for his play “Counting Sheep” - a story set far back in the past, it’s a refreshing look at what, exactly, it means to count something.

Two plays that received honorable mention include “Entropy” by Paige Borak, a senior Theatre Arts and Psychology major at Stony Brook and “A Planet is Born” by Hillary Bhaskaran, a freelance writer from southern California.

The winning plays will be honored with a reception and showcased in public staged readings on Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 at 5 p.m. at the Simons Center Auditorium at Stony Brook. This event is free and open to the public.

Stony Brook University’s Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, and Department of Theatre Arts announce their third annual Science Playwriting Competition. The winning entries, submitted by University faculty, current and former students and a freelance writer from California, were inspired by the lives of real people, common pop culture references and more.

The contest, created

by Christopher Herzog, associate professor at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook, combines science and theatre, while finding new ways of teaching difficult concepts, traditionally based in the classroom.

“By bringing science and theatre together, the annual Science Playwriting Competition aims to find new ways of teaching, learning, and thinking,” said Herzog. “Science plays are an excellent tool for explaining difficult concepts and this competition provides an outlet for scientists and playwrights to go beyond the bounds of their normal ways of thinking, spark their imagination and synthesize a new experience for all.”

Stony Brook students, staff, faculty and members of the community submitted 10-minute plays combining themes of science and theatricality.

Warm Thanksgiving James Wilson Young Middle School students and staff worked to warm up the holiday season for the less fortunate members of the community by coordinating a food drive.

Throughout the effort,

the school collected more than 3240 items of nonperishable food items and can goods for the Our Lady of the Snow food pantry and a soup kitchen in Patchogue. The homerooms from each

grade level battled to see who could collect the most donations and the winning classes were awarded with a bagel breakfast just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

A sea of red, white and blue blanketed the cafeteria at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School as they celebrated Veterans’ Day with an interactive Skype session with Petty Officer Victoria Alvarez of the U.S. Navy.

During the celebration, several students had the opportunity to ask Petty Officer Alvarez questions about her job, read her poems about what it means

to be a Veteran and perform a patriotic song. The school’s celebration spilled out into the adjoin hallway, the “Hallway of Heroes,” which was decorated with the names of 220 men and women who proudly serve the nation and have a special connection to the school community.

Additionally, the school participated in the Green Light Campaign.

Lastly, the school raise more than $300 for the Honor Flight, which assists World War II veterans visit their monument in Washington D.C.

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Girls Varsity Volleyball team recently hosted its annual Dig Pink Challenge, in which the team rallies to raise funds to fight breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness month. The team raised more than $3,450 dollars with help from varsity and junior varsity athletic teams, parents, friends, teachers and local businesses.

In the past five years,

the CHS Girls Volleyball Dig Pink program has both raised awareness about the realities of breast cancer and donated more than $18,000 to breast cancer research.

The Girls Varsity Volleyball team raises money by selling baked goods, bracelets and t-shirts, conducting raffles and receiving donations.

The Dig Pink program is part of a nationwide initiative to enable women and men affected by this disease to regain control of their lives. Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Ladies’ Field Hockey Coach Jenn Piscitelli and her team recently played league rival William Floyd High School in a special home game to raise awareness for breast cancer.

The CHS Ladies’ Field Hockey team beat the William Floyd High School team by a score of 6-1, improving their record to 7-6 with a shot at making this year’s playoff tournament at the end of the season.

The team raised nearly $500 for breast cancer research selling baked goods, raffle tickets and pink merchandise before and during the game.

“This year’s Suffolk County Championships was another exciting meet,” Sayville-Bayport Blue Point Girls Swim Coach Nicole MendezChicas reported. “The divers did extremely well on Friday, November 6th.

Megan Romano placed 10th and Calista Tomasetti placed 14th in the county.”

Coach Mendez-Chicas continued. “On Saturday, (November 7th) Julia Horan, Leighann Gensch, Ally Alliegro, Tricia Shiebler, Meghan Caraher, Megan Donnelly and Mackenzie Thomas swam their hearts out. It was

very close, with coaches huddled around the score sheets after each event to see who was winning. It came down to Sayville/ Bayport/Bluepoint, Half Hallow Hills (HHH), Connetquot/East Islip (CONN) and Ward Melville (WM).”

“Although the other teams had more than double the amount of swimmers than SayBayBlue, the motivation of our girls was unparalleled,” Coach Mendez-Chicas added proudly. “Every single swimmer beat her best time of the season and/or moved up in the rankings.

Most of the girls swam lifetime bests! It came down to the last event, where our girls swam yet another best time and got the final points to win the meet! SayBayBlue is the 2015 Swimming & Diving Suffolk County Champion, breaking Ward Melville’s 23 year winning streak!”

With the SayvilleBayport Blue Point Girls Swim Team swimming the event in yards at States, Coach Mendez-Chicas has great confidence her team will “crush their own record” in States.

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., was recently notified by the district Board of Education (BOE) that the teachers of the district were to be commended at the November 10th meeting.

In front of a meeting room packed with residents and teachers, BOE President Milynn Argulis recognized the Connetquot teachers for their service to the community: “The Board of Education would like to recognize the Teachers of the Connetquot School District for their contributions to the Connetquot community.

For three consecutive years the Connetquot Teachers have won the NYSUT award for outstanding service to not only the Connetquot Community, but to organizations within New York State.

The Connetquot Teachers’ endeavors include, but are not limited to: Habitat for Humanity, the Cohalan Children’s Center, the Bohemia Historical Society; Make a Wish

Foundation; Rotary Club; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ride for Life and have contributed significantly to scholarships for our students. We look forward to a year filled with learning, student growth, achievement, and positive experiences that lend themselves to not only academic achievement, but to a student’s emotional and social growth as well.

Mr. Felicio also announced that the Connetquot Teachers Association would be donating $2,500 to the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement

of Children (CFAC). He explained that, “… all the money raised by the CFAC comes directly back to our students and teachers in the form of grants for equipment, supplies, activities and training.

Our goal is to make the March 10th, 2016 CFAC Gala the most successful in the organization’s history.

We look forward to being an important part of it.”

Thanksgiving Prep Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts program students will prepare about 120 dinners for long-term patients and home-bound seniors of the Dominican Sisters of Hampton Bays in what has become an annual and happy undertaking for the culinary program and its students.

This marks the seventh year Suffolk County

Community College has happily done the holiday cooking.

The dinner preparation will take place on Wednesday, November 25th, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center, 20 Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901.

About 40 students and faculty chefs from

the college’s culinary program will prepare the meal whose ingredients were provided by the Dominican Sisters - a dozen, 20 pound turkeys; 100 pounds of mashed potatoes; 50 pounds of sweet potatoes; 80 pounds of stuffing; 25 pounds of assorted vegetables and 18 each of apple and pumpkin pies. And, of course, gravy – 5 gallons of it!

Anchored by two runners finishing in the top ten, Suffolk County Community College won the 2015 NJCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championship last Saturday. The Sharks clinched their program’s second national title and first since 2007.

Mighty Maya’s Story Dear Community, I am writing this letter to ask for your prayers and any help you can give to beautiful “Mighty” Maya, who was born June 17th, 2015 with a rare neurological disorder called Hemimegalence phaly. This disorder causes catastrophic epileptic seizures that, in time, could severely debilitate Maya’s cognition and even kill her. Anti-seizure medi cation will not work to control her seizures. The only way to help Maya live a productive and fulfilling life is to have her undergo radical surgery, a hemisphe rectomy, that disconnects the “bad” half of her brain. Maya’s parents are asking for donations to be used toward the cost of everything associated with Maya’s journey, from travel, to medical needs, to physical and occup ational therapy, among other expenses. We know that Mighty Maya is stron g enough for the challenges ahead and we thank you for helping her get there by either spreading the word and donating to her cause.

At the age of only four months, Maya had her brain surgery on October 28th, to disconnect the “bad” half of her brain , at Boston Children’s Hospital. After being in ICU for a number of days, Maya is now recovering in inpatient care, where she started receiving physi cal therapy soon after her brain surgery.
