Concept to Creation By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s 5 o’clock on Friday the 13th, deadline day, “odd day” (11/13/15), whatever you want to call it… And here I am contemplating my column, the final piece of the puzzle that is the week’s work here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers.

By the time you read this, our holiday issue of Seasons™ Magazine will be on the streets, featuring the best of Long Island happenings, some highlights from New York City, and an array of helpful hints to make the shopping and decorating rush go as smoothly as possible. We have even mixed in a few recipes for you to sample at your next holiday gathering.

RISEing to the Occasion

Promoting Kindness Bayport-Blue Point High School students learned about the power of words and actions when renowned public speaker and child survivor of warstricken Liberia Shadrack Boakye spoke at the school.

Before the entire student body, Mr. Boakye spoke about how, despite all of the devastating and negative obstacles placed before him, he turned his life around with the support of a few key individuals.

He noted that one of those individuals was his eighthgrade teacher and current BBP Board Member Gina Murphy, who encouraged him to pursue his writing talents. Additionally, he

reminded students that the words one uses could create a ripple effect within their immediate circles and community while stressing the importance of becoming an up-stander for those being bullied.

In addition to the schoolwide assembly, the school’s Peer Education Program members attended a breakout workshop training session with Mr. Boakye.

The session focused on sustaining the message of the program through interactive role-playing activities. The group, which was formed as an initiative from the Suffolk County Health

Department, regularly trains the district’s students on embracing kindness and compassion.

“The additional training that was provided to the peer education program, was important so that we can maintain and sustain his message,” said school psychologist and PEP advisor Dayna Russo.

“This is a proactive way to eliminate the “once and forgotten” type of assembly. The PEP students will now go into classrooms throughout the district and teach their peers by utilizing some of Shadrack’s message and activities.”

Already this year, our R.I.S.E. students are rising to the challenges of their scientific research, reported Sayville High School Science Research Teacher Maria Brown.

Sayville students Nicole Farese and Jahan Rahman, who participated in the High School Science Research Program this past summer at Brookhaven National Laboratory presented their research in Berkner Hall at the Poster Session showcase on November 5th, 2015. Invited to attend the Poster Session were families, friends, teachers, administrators, and

scientists from BNL. Sayville Senior Nicole Farese’s research: The Calibration Study for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Metrology Fixtures, focused on determining the amount of strain needed to apply a force that will cause charged coupled devices (small lenses that will make up the large telescope lens) to be completely smooth.

This force is necessary as each small lens must fit perfectly together to maximize the functionality of the whole lens, which will outfit the largest telescope in the world!

Woodhull Elementary School is celebrating the importance of lifelong reading as they embrace “Pick a Reading Partner” (PARP) month this November.

The program, promoted by the New York State PTA and supported each year by the local Fire Island PTA, encourages parents and children to read

together for at least 15 minutes a day. Known in previous years as “Parents as Reading Partners,” the program has traditionally featured a month full of activities, special guests, and spirit events that encourage reading and literacy. One of the centerpieces of Woodhull’s PARP festivities has always been the decoration of

the main hallway in the school in accordance with the theme, which this year is “Feel the Rhythm of Reading.”

Budget Adopted Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced today Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget has been unanimously adopted by all the members of the Islip Town Board with few changes.

“I am very happy to report there were very few changes to the proposed budget presented a couple of weeks ago and the Town Board has unanimously adopted Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

“In addition to adopting a fiscally conservative, efficient and transparent budget, we have all worked very hard to provide Islip residents with the information they need to understand where their tax dollars go. Residents may view the details about this budget on the town’s website,” Supervisor Carpenter added.

The Town of Islip’s 2016 Adopted Operating Budget, which reflects a very modest increase of 1.54% over the 2015 budget,

is available on the town website at www.islipny.gov.

Some of the services and expenses covered by the Operating Budget include: Administrative, Assessment, Building and Grounds Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Traffic Safety, Tax Collection, Town Clerk, Public Safety, Parks and Recreation, Water Management, Youth Services, Highway Repair and Snow Removal.

A Matter of Time

By: Frank Fernandez Long ago, I saw a structure, unusual in its shape and size.

Imposing. Hulking, I needed a closer look.

Then I noticed it.

Inconspicuous.

No one had even noticed a small crack had formed.

I knew that it was only a matter of Time until it would burst.

Full of pride, I thought I could hold it back. Little did I know, the fear.

Many have tried, but none have succeeded, holding back the dam of Time.

The crack slowly spread, and I knew not what to do.

But the crack still grew.

Larger and larger, Hopeless in all proposals, I turned tail and ran.

Hell hath no fury stronger than the man who runs.

Runs away from Time.

Callously spreading, Stuck in its dateless decay.

Everything consumed.

There was no more choice.

In the end, I surrendered, surrendered to Time.

When will all men learn, never to stand in the way of the wrath of Time!

Varsity Update Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Ladies’ Varsity Gymnastics team and CHS T-Bird Football team continue to impress fans, family and friends.

The Ladies Varsity Gymnastics team recently competed against the Smithtown High School neighbors at home. The Varsity Gymnastics team is in League One this year and Coach Kristen Fusco anticipates tough competition throughout the season.

The Connetquot Varsity Football team recently lost a game against William Floyd High School after coming off a 41-0 win against local rival Sachem East. Connetquot Football Coach Mike Hansen looks to build on the team’s second half effort as the season progresses.

Taking Broadway by Storm

Local Connetquot Central School District (CCSD) Connetquot High School graduate, Stephanie Torns (Class of 2005), was recently cast in the Broadway premier of “Waitress,” opening April 24th, 2016. Torns was an active drama student at Connetquot High School, spreading her acting wings in a number of charitable performances and school plays. Before joining the cast of “Waitress,” Torns was an understudy for the role of Elphaba in the Tony Award-winning musical, “Wicked.”

“We’re extremely proud

of all that Ms. Torns has accomplished,” said CCSD Superintendent Lynda Adams.

“The Connetquot School District has a robust arts program and always encourages our students to push themselves and pursue their dreams.

“I cannot begin to express my gratitude to Connetquot for helping me be where I am today, specifically the incredible music department at the high school. I have always loved to sing and dance since I was a young girl, but I had never done theater in my life until one of my music teachers asked me to be a dancer in the musical “Oklahoma” when I was in the tenth grade. I fell madly in love with performing in a musical theater production,” said Stephanie Torns. “With the guidance, love and constant support from my teachers I found myself choosing theater as my career path. It’s a dream come true for me to be able to do what I love on Broadway and I am beyond grateful for my music teachers at Connetquot High School.

Fire Smart In celebration of national fire prevention month, students in Karen McNulty’s grade 1-2 class at Woodhull Elementary School in the Fire Island School District participated in an educational program with Ocean Beach Fire Department volunteer firefighter Jason Bendicksen.

Mr. Bendicksen, who is also a bus driver for the district, appeared in full gear while instructing students in basic fire safety. The class discussed how to prevent fires in their homes, and what to do in case a fire occurs.

In a hands-on component of the presentation, students tried on parts

of Mr. Bendicksen’s gear and learned how they function in the work of fighting fires. Following the presentation, students wrote personal thank-you cards to Mr. Bendicksen thanking him for his presentation and for bravery serve the community.

Lakeland Fire Department Captain and Board of Education Trustee Ted Imbasciani and firefighters Chris Mannino, Joe Carter and Joe Ferarra spoke about the need for smoke detectors and fire drills at home and the importance of knowing an

The Bristal Assisted Living communities sponsored the play “A Piece of My Heart,” performed professionally at the Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. The play presented a powerful, true drama of five nurses who staffed field hospitals during the Vietnam War. Named “The most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation,” by The Vietnam Vets Association, “A Piece of My Heart” focuses on the role of women during the war, and seeks to pay tribute to the nearly 11,000 women in uniform who served incountry during that time.

80 year-old Ann Berg, a resident of The Bristal at East Northport, and a former Bellmore resident said, “The acting

was amazing, and the experiences of these young women were heart wrenching and unforgettable.”

Jan Burman, President of The Engel Burman Group, developers and operators of The Bristal Assisted Living communities, said “For many who served in Vietnam, the experience is as much an emotional presence for them today as it was fifty years ago.

We believe we have a responsibility to present this play as it reminds all of us of the enormous burdens our veterans continue to bear in the defense of our nation.”

Steven Krieger, a Partner at The Engel Burman Group added, “These women completed their tours of duty under enormously difficult

circumstances and with little recognition. Some gave their lives while others left Vietnam with many emotional and physical scars they still bear today. A half century later, this play seeks to explore their experiences and pay tribute to all those women who served.”

There are nine communities of The Bristal Assisted Living on Long Island. Each offers activities for residents based on their personal preferences, hobbies and interests. Programs include arts and crafts, book clubs, shopping trips, and regularly scheduled cultural outings. With a cinema, library, billiards parlor and fitness center on-site, residents can enjoy themselves right in the comfort of The Bristal.

Building a Movement Long Island organizations gathered at the first Progressive Vision for Long Island: Organizing for Success conference. This conference was organized by a new groundbreaking initiative called Long Island Progressive Network that brings together immigration, social justice, LGBTQ rights, environmental issues, labor rights, education, sustainable development and community organizations to work together to build power and to move progressive issues throughout Long Island, the state and the nation.

The Conference is a historic event because it is the first time Long Island organizations explored what can happen if we bring together people from many different issue areas that all have an interest in creating positive change on Long Island. Bob Master, Assistant to the Vice President for Legislative, Political and Mobilization Activities for District One of the Communications Workers of America, kicked off the event by giving a national overview of labor struggles. Attendees then gathered for issue workshops and skill building trainings, to hone the skills needed to effect change.

“The time has come for our organizations to work and fight together to improve the lives of the residents of

Long Island. Long Island is one of the most segregated communities, there is a major housing crisis, severe income inequality and major corruption. In order to win significant improvements on these issues we must do things differently by banning together and supporting allied organizations’ campaigns” stated Lisa Tyson,

Warm Clothing Drive

Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, third from right, welcomed members of the 106th Rescue Wing of the Air National Guard, the Patriot Guard, veterans and active duty military to the College’s Ammerman Campus in Selden on Monday November 9th for the College’s annual Veterans Day ceremony.

Suffolk County has the largest population of returning veterans in New York State according the County’s Veterans Services Agency. McKay told the gathered veterans that the college is committed to assisting veterans in every way possible.

The college recently appointed a director of veterans affairs who is responsible for developing

and implementing training sessions for faculty, administrators and staff about best practices for providing services to veterans, developing policies related to veteran’s affairs, design and implement student veteran recruitment strategies and complete the design and implementation of oncampus Veterans Resource Centers.

The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is hosting a warm clothing drive at their Hauppauge office for Long Islanders in need. They are accepting donations of new and gently used warm clothing from generous donors in the area. Coats, sweaters, pants, gloves or any other clothing that can protect from the harsh winter season are appreciated.

Clothing brought to the LIHC collection bin from November 9th through November 25th at 1383 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26, will

be gifted to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Long Island. Clothing can be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Society uses donations like these to help the 200,000 Long Islanders that St. Vincent de Paul serves annually. These materials are either given away to people in need or sold at an affordable price at St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores.

The LIHC is a coalition of health and human service providers and organizations, working

together to improve the health of Long Islanders.

St. Vincent de Paul is a member of the LIHC, along with all of the hospitals on Long Island, the two county health departments, dozens of community-based organizations, colleges, and other health and human service agencies.
