A recent visit to LIU Post created real-world business management experience for Sachem High School East business students and students who work at the school store, The Arrow Zone.

During the visit, students met with Dr. Robert Valli, dean of the School of Business at LIU Post, and representatives from the LIU school store management team to share business skills and techniques. Among the topics covered were accounting, fiscal practices, inventory control and pricing strategies.

The partnership created a plethora of learning opportunities for students at both schools and will continue in the future as the student groups share best practices for how to mitigate operational challenges.

There are many ways that individuals just like you can get involved with Long Island Cares. Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa.

Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Bravo Supermarket in Patchogue has teamed up with The Greater Patchogue Chamber’s Latino Leadership Council (LLC) to provide free Thanksgiving turkeys, along with non-perishable food items, to families in need on Saturday, November 16 from 12pm to 3pm at Bravo Supermarket, 179 South Ocean Ave, in Patchogue.

“Thanks to Bravo’s immense generosity, we’re able to provide some hope to our community this year,” says Chairman, Javier Kinghorn. “This

is just the beginning. We plan to continuously grow this tradition, year after year.”

Bravo co-owner, Ariel Bonilla, says, “We’ve been thinking of ways to reach out and do something for the community. Javier came to me with the idea for a Thanksgiving outreach, and we made it happen!”

Bonilla adds that, as a bonus, the market will give customers who choose to contribute to the outreach 10% off their purchase when they spend $20 or more. “It’s an incentive to

welcome new customers who may have never thought of shopping at Bravo before,” says Bonilla.

Students Hit All Of The Right Notes Based on their incredible musical talents, five Bayport-Blue Point High School students have been recognized as premier musicians by New York State Music Association and were invited to participate in this year’s All-State and All-County music festivals.

Future Medical Leader This past June, Sachem High School North junior Solbright Llivicura attended the National Leadership Academies’ prestigious Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston. Students Say “No” To Strangers Students from Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently welcomed Patrick Chierichella of the Rose Brucia Educational Foundation who spoke to students about informative strategies on avoiding strangers.

Students throughout Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District gathered in excitement for a special assembly that showcased items from a time capsule left

by Merrimac students in 1989.

As part of the assembly, students reviewed a collection of popular items from 30 years ago such as a Merrimac T-shirt, materials from the nurse’s office and classwork that included self-portraits, students’ wishes for the world and learning activities students engaged in at that time.

Later this year, Merrimac alumni will visit the school to view the materials their class left and view the items current students will be placing within the time capsule to be reopened years from now by future Merrimac students.
