The Perfect Dress By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing? Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you... I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,
well, let’s just say that window closes most of the way before I can motivate myself to venture out. Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination. Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So
after riding the escalator up and down and making the rounds of each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable. Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on. More than 20 students from Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School recently harvested over 200,000 clams, which the students had seeded in rafts four months ago at Long Beach in Smithtown. As part of the school’s Mariculture Program,
The Seventh Annual “Empty Bowls” Fundraiser - a Sayville High School Art Club event in recognition of National Hunger Awareness Month (October) - once again encouraged dining with friends and family. Delicious soups, some returning favorites, some new recipes, along with fresh salads, were homemade by teachers, staff, and families, along with some local businesses, and generously shared at the evening activity. In addition, for the price of the $10 admission, attendees not only enjoyed a wide assortment of soups, salads, and dinner rolls, but were able to select a one-of-a-kind handmade
ceramic bowl created by Sayville High School Art students and teachers. Some of the delectable soup recipes included: Garlic, Spinach and Sausage, Sausage Broccoli Rabe, Cream of Potato, Potato Leek, Chili, Sweet Potato Bisque, Pumpkin, Three Bean Tuscan, New England Clam Chowder, Chicken Pasta, Cream of Broccoli, and of course, the old-time favorites, Chicken Noodle and Beef Barley. Special thanks go to Crickets in Sayville for donating the salad and Fritzcshe’s Bakery for donating fresh bread. Empty Bowls, which is also held in conjunction with the Sayville School Employees Charitable
Foundation,* was organized by High School art teacher John Verschure, with the assistance of Art Department Chairperson Debbie Urso, High School art teachers Evan Hammer and Jennifer Berotti, and supported by the entire Art department districtwide. Many thanks go to the student volunteers who either sold the unique hand-crafted bowls (which are both dishwasher and microwave safe) or ladled the soups to hungry customers. By the time everyone had their fill, the fundraiser had collected $1,350 for the Sayville Food Pantry!

population on Long Island Sound and Great South Bay. The program is part of an almost decadelong initiative to aid the revitalization of hard shell clam population in the Long Island Sound.

Anyone passing through Downtown Sayville during this year’s Fall Festival couldn’t have missed the ghouls, goblins, witches, ghosts, headless horseman, and assorted whimsical decorations adorning the storefronts. Upon the request of the Sayville Chamber, Sayville High School and Middle School art students returned for the Annual Halloween Windows Paintings, which fortunately, despite rainyday delays, were completed in the nick of time for the
Fall Festival. Not just any artwork goes on display. The window paintings are the result of a selection process. Once members of the Sayville Art Department review the Halloween-themed sketches submitted by the students, they determine which designs would be most suitable for those Sayville merchants who have agreed to showcase student works. Again, this year, the delightfully ghoulish displays were well appreciated by the merchants and patrons
alike. However, it is important to note each year that the success of this venture is due to the long-standing partnership between the Kiwanis Club members, who have generously donated painting supplies, and the Sayville Art Department. Thanks to such unwavering support, countless generations of Sayville art students have been allowed to express the spirit of this bewitching season on the storefront windows.
With the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaching, JVC Broadcasting and its roster of four Long Island radio stations is once again hosting their annual “StuffA-Truck” food drive to support Long Island Cares, Inc.-The Harry Chapin Food Bank and the Town of Brookhaven INTERFACE. This year’s two-day event will be held on Saturday, November 22nd and Sunday, November 23rd at the Café Figaro parking lot in the Wal-Mart shopping center in Centereach from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. All four radio stations, including My Country 96.1, Party 105, LI News Radio and La Fiesta will join together in the battle to fight hunger here on Long Island. This year, JVC Broadcasting hopes to beat last year’s total of 26,000
pounds of food collected at the “Stuff-A-Truck” event. “The Thanksgiving holiday always brings a heightened concern for those who are hungry and food insecure,” said Elana Sissons, Community Services and Food Drive Manager for Long Island Cares. “This year, we need to call attention to the growing need for emergency food on Long Island to help our neighbors in need, especially children, disabled veterans and the homebound elderly who are struggling along with many of the more than eight percent of Long Islanders that are unemployed and counting on many charitable organizations for assistance during the holidays and throughout the year,” said Paule Pachter, CEO.
“While many of us are very fortunate, many of the people in our community are in need of assistance,” said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. “They could be strangers, or our next door neighbors. I urge everyone to donate whatever they can to help make the holidays a happier time for all. By doing our part we can make a big difference and I thank JVC Broadcasting, Long Island Cares and our own INTERFACE program for their year round efforts to help those who are less fortunate.” Long Island Cares distributes more than just food. Their needs this season are cat food and dog food, personal care items, new blankets, and healthy snacks for kids.

He never questioned his duty and completed many dangerous missions. He returned to college after the war and earned his degree as an aeronautical engineer. He continued serving our country in Washington DC, working at NASA, and retired after 40 years in 1982. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
Using Baseball To Fundraise Home Runs for Charity (HR4C), a Sayville not-for-profit organization that supports local charitable organizations that was started by Sayville Middle School 8th grader Noah Horak, officially gave back by presenting checks to Long Island’s own Ronald McDonald house, Brookhaven Hospital’s Cardiac Unit, Long Island Cares and the Neighborhood House. Donors pledge a dollar amount for each home run hit by a Sayville Little League player. Twenty two players hit a total of 44 home runs over the 2014 regular season, raising approximately $3,500 in contributions in the Charity’s second year. “It’s pretty cool to raise money to help others less fortunate than us”, says Noah Horak. “In two years we have raised about $5,000 - that’s incredible. Our donors are awesome, but so are our players” Ms. Shelly Psaris with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island was on hand to receive the generous donation during Sayville Little League’s awards dinner on October 23rd. This is Home Runs for Charity’s second $1,000 donation to the Ronald McDonald House. “As a volunteer for the Ronald McDonald House of LI, I was honored to accept the generous check from the Home Runs for Charity (HR4C) to support the good works of the Ronald McDonald House of LI. As I looked
around at all the children from the Sayville Little League I thought about their efforts to make a difference in the world and it touched me deeply” says Shelly Psaris. “Sayville Little League is proud to have partnered with Home Runs for Charity for another great year. This year
charity alive and well. This year in addition to Ronald Mc Donald and Brookhaven Hospital, HR4C donated to a local Sayville charity ‘The Neighborhood House’ which supports families struggling through the loss of a loved one(s).” “We look forward to working with HR4C once again in the 2015 season. The Little League experience is so much more when the kids have an opportunity to give back,” said Bill Sukow President, Sayville Little League Ed Horak, Noah’s dad, added, “I couldn’t be prouder of our community, our Little League players and Noah. It’s been his enthusiasm not to mention his first home run over the fence at Gillette field that made this possible. This community’s support of his effort has been amazing.
