Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature.

Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with

record snowfall yet again.

Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end.

Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’.

In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted

house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day.

For now, anyway.

And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax.

There’s something about shopping for the holidays during the actual season, don’t you think? Those who are already finished are missing out on the true spirit in their rush to cross tasks off the to-do list.

It’s not a race. It’s about putting some thought into it and enjoying the experience.

Mary uses songs, board games, and a variety of other strategies in her school library that create engaging and meaningful learning. At the SLS meetings, attendees played Librarian Bingo and made “Wonder Cans” - a craft project that Mary created. She said, “The Wonder Can is a device I use to spark questions and investigation. I hope all the librarians take away practical information from this presentation and

think, ‘I can do that in my library.’”

School librarian Teri from the Babylon Elementary School said, “I am going to go back to my school and use all of this, and I know that for a fact. The activities that Mary is showing us are simple, easy to do, and very engaging. I really like the Wiser the Owl book.

She created it so I don’t have to rephrase it and the students love to sing.”

IFU uses an inquiry and learning curriculum research model that provides active learning through a spiral framework of instruction.

As students wonder, investigate, synthesize, express, and review, they become WISER. Zdrojewski created Wiser the Owl, a children’s book that incorporates the cycle of inquiry and learning for her elementary students.

In celebration of fire prevention month, elementary students throughout the BayportBlue Point School District had the chance to learn about and practice important fire safety procedures this October.

Throughout the month, Academy Street and Sylvan Avenue kindergartners walked to the Bayport Fire Department while

Blue Point elementary students visited the Blue Point Fire Department.

In turn members of the Bayport Fire Department conducted in-school assembly programs for additional grades at Academy and Sylvan.

During the programs, firefighters spoke with the students about different pieces of equipment, the importance of a family

Bayport-Blue Point’s AP Program offers 16 courses spanning content areas that engage students in intense discussions, problem-solving concepts and collaborative activities.

These offerings give students the opportunity to earn college credit and priority placement to stand out in the admissions process.

Community sprit and pride were on full display as the varsity football team dominated the competition during this year’s BayportBlue Point High School homecoming celebration.

The traditional homecoming parade, which began at Blue Point Elementary School and ended at the entrance to the high school football field, was attended by community members of all ages. The event featured

student musicians from the district’s elementary and secondary schools along with floats created by the high school grade levels, cheerleaders and candidates for homecoming queen.

At halftime of the football game, Hannah Giannico was crowded this year’s queen and the senior class was named the winner of the float contest with their entry based on the Disney/Pixar movie, Up.

Patrick Liu was crowned this year’s king during the homecoming dance.

The BBP Phantoms kicked off the big game with three rushing touchdowns in the first half against the Center Moriches Red Devils. The team’s strong lead carried through to the remainder of the game, which ended in BBP advancing their record to 5-1 with a score of 50-14.

Golden Gathering

Seniors who attended the Golden Gathering, hosted

by Senator Lee Zeldin at St. Joseph’s College, had the opportunity to receive manicures and blood pressure screenings compliments of Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Adult Education students who are studying for careers in cosmetology and Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN).

The Annual Golden Gathering allows seniors to meet in one location, have access to a variety of information, programs, and services such as those provided by the ESBOCES students.

Adult Nursing Teacher Catherine McLaughlin said, “My students are participating in this event because I want them to learn the dynamics of hypertension. They can speak to the elderly

about how to control hypertension by modifying diets and lifestyles.

Students are connecting with representatives from other agencies and learning about potential services for patients, job opportunities, outreach programs, and how they can be a dynamic part of the health community on Long Island.”

Christina Piazza, a student in the LPN Program, said, “Students from my class volunteered to come to the Golden Gathering and provide blood pressure screenings and educate the elderly because blood pressure issues are prominent in the elderly community and people don’t realize the impact it has on every other body system.” Christina and her classmates gathered information from vendors such as the

Family Service League and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital to take back and incorporate into the LPN Program.”

Cosmetology students had a continuous flow of seniors to their table.

Volunteering at an event like the Golden Gathering provides community service hours to the adult education students and gives them an opportunity to practice their practical and soft skills. Teacher Dorothea LoBiondo said, “My students volunteer their time and skill at a variety of places across Long Island, from spa nights, to doing hair and nails for school district theatre productions. The Golden Gathering event provides an intergenerational experience that benefits the seniors and the students.”

Healthy Eating Day National Eating Healthy Day is Wednesday, November 5th, and the American Heart Association wants people to listen the advice of generations of mothers: Eat your vegetables (and fruit).

Americans typically consume about half their recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables. The American Heart Association recommends eating eight or more fruit and vegetable servings every day. For an average adult consuming 2,000 calories daily, that

means about 4 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables a day.

According to the American Heart Association, fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals and fiber, and low in saturated fat and calories. Most fruits and vegetables also have no or little sodium, and eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help you control your weight and your blood pressure.

While heart disease and stroke are leading causes of death and disability for all Americans, more than 80 percent of risk factors

for heart disease and stroke are preventable through behaviors like making better food choices, getting regular exercise, keeping a healthy weight and not smoking.

Family History Roundtable Series The Connetquot Public Library hosts the Family History Roundtable Series, a series of programs designed to help navigate your genealogical expedition through time and discover the moving narratives of those who came before you.

On Wednesday evening, September 17th, the Connetquot Public Library hosted a genealogical program, How To Research The Municipal Archives In New York City. Carol Proven, who has taught genealogy classes at St. Joseph’s College, shared her extensive knowledge of research and record gathering.

Through an informative

slide show presentation and discussion, Proven listed the vast collection of records housed in this lower Manhattan location.

Handouts detailed the years of vital records from all five boroughs, census information, court records, voter registration, coroner’s records and much more.

The lively discussion prompted an exchange of ideas amongst the audience and delved further into the genealogical experience.

Proven offered a case study which demonstrated the steps one may take when reaching an impasse during research.

She detailed relevant websites and explained the process

of obtaining records through the Municipal Archives. A brief history of Ellis Island, the gateway to 20th century migration, was explored and provided a glimpse to the site where many of our ancestors first set foot on American soil.

The Connetquot Public Library offers a Genealogy Blog, rich with information on research, ideas, websites and portals to help solve your ancestral mysteries.
