the fun filled day. The day kicked off with the 5K Fun Run followed by a scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park that featured activities for the entire family along the way. For the third year in a row, the event included a Motorcycle and classic car run sponsored

by Hansen Home Designs.

Also, another new feature was a live performance by students enrolled in the All Music’s Rock-nRoll University, including numerous individuals with disabilities receiving services from DDI. The day was capped off with a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more.

This year’s event Grand Marshals were seven extraordinary people who for the second year in a row, spent one week walking 128-miles from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. Raising over $40,000

from both walks, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny, Morgan Zajkowski, Ellen McBurney, Peter Barker, Marita Rausch and Liam Kenny have proved to be worthy honorees.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, hosted its “Walk, Run & Ride for Autism,” on October 12th at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raised nearly $60,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services.

“This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said cochair of the event Charley Hudson. “This year we not only met that goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of Long Islanders.”

Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing.

Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well.

Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.

Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time.

I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge.

I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming

over his tropical sanctuary.

And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me?

Can I have some? Please??

And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish.

I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes.

In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

Graduation Held Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office graduated thirtyseven recruits from Class 14-154 to the rank of Correction Officer during a graduation ceremony held at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood on Tuesday, October 7th.

As recruits of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Academy Bureau, the new officers successfully navigated a demanding thirteen week training program. During their Academy instruction, all

The Class planned and implemented the project as

a group, and also made the decision to choose Little Flower as the recipient.

The supplies were delivered to Little Flower on Wednesday, October 8th, the day after they graduated the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Academy.

“If you build it, they will come.”

Magical as these words are, it takes more than magic to realize dreams in retail. And Sayville High School students will learn how to make merchandising a reality this year with the launching

of “Golden Goods,” a new Sayville High school store.

Golden Goods will be open throughout the school year and will be run primarily by the Career Development and Functional Academics (CDFA) program in conjunction with other

High School students from clubs and organizations who will serve as role models and mentors to our students with disabilities.

However, the purpose of the school store is not just to have “kids” sell merchandise. Rather, it is a real-world learning

opportunity that can benefit everyone.

It involves business practices, such as retail, merchandizing, inventory, financial management, and advertising. It requires an understanding of both one’s target consumers and how to attract them, as well as finding efficient ways to balance supply and demand, and still meet the challenges of revenue and expenditures. Most importantly, a school store is a business venture through which all students can learn actual skills they will need for acquiring jobs and careers in their futures.

While working at Golden Goods, the CDFA students

will be able to practice their communication skills by conversing with their customers and helping them find specific merchandise offered in the store. In addition to opening its doors for customers, the CDFA students, with the guidance of Transition Coordinator Claire Rymer, Teachers Donna Trpicovsky and Chad Cross and support staff Barbara Nintzel, Dawn Ewald and Jeff Morris, will also be developing a catalog of merchandise and even create an online presence for advertising.

Recently, on the day of the ceremonial ribbon-cutting that commemorated the official

opening of Golden Goods, there was great excitement among the CDFA students as well as an encouraging turnout of consumers.

Making history, Sayville Superintendent Dr. Walter Schartner was their first customer with his purchase of a Spirit Wear hat and matching scarf, Now begins the real task.

Keeping their Golden Goods customer satisfaction in mind, the students hope to build a reputation so that more will come, allowing them to maintain their own unique presence in the High School community with a store of their own.

Twenty years ago, Sayville Class Vice President and Football Captain Carl Cangelosi marched at the 1994 Commencement like his fellow graduates, with his eyes wide open to possibilities and his mind on future plans for a higher education - he at Johns Hopkins University; but his heart would always look back home to Sayville.

Now, an accomplished professional who is raising his family in Sayville, Carl Cangelosi has been an active participant in the Sayville community, a community he fell in love with as a child surfing with his father and brother and clamming with his uncle in the Great South Bay. Between then and now, Cangelosi achieved his BA in Economics at Johns Hopkins University, pursued his Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and Education at SUNY Stony Brook, and is near completion (December 2014) of his second Masters from Columbia University, this time a Masters of Science in Sustainability Management.

His professional organizations and certifications include: LEED GA/U.S. Green Building Council; Green Classrooms Professional Certificate (USGBC); Teaching Green Certificate/ Molloy College; SUMA NET Impact/Columbia University; SSGBC Long Island Chapter; Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. (Stop Polluting, Littering, and

Save Harbors); and the New Economics Institute.

Applying his multiple degrees and certifications to help preserve the environment, Cangelosi is a leader in green campaigns as a Social Studies teacher, as well as an innovator for improving school-management sustainability. While he has served the public in various capacities as an Ocean Lifeguard at PointO-Woods, NY, as well as for Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning, Cangelosi is a dynamic Social Studies teacher in Lynbrook UFSD. Not only has he developed U.S. History curriculum and was the first to incorporate a virtual-learning environment using Moodle, Cangelosi also launched environmental programs and clubs. In Lynbrook, the Green Leadership Club, which he created and implemented building-wide, promotes sustainability programs such as “Power-Down Campaign” and “Adopt A Storm Drain Program” that seed respect for the environment in the next generation.

Most recently, Cangelosi is founder and Executive Director of Upcycle Education, Inc. which (to quote the website): “is a planned, 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization with a mission to provide open, accessible information for school officials and policy makers

to learn from, in order to establish and improve sustainable best practices.

This allows schools to save money by maximizing the efficient use of available resources, while minimizing the adverse social and environmental impacts associated with school operations.

Once re-invested into classrooms, these savings can serve to increase the value of our schools by improving student health and performance.”

An advocate for both schools and community, Cangelosi has consistently demonstrated that his philosophy for change to promote sustainability is paramount. Such a legacy is a true testament to Cangelosi’s character and integrity. With his diverse talents as a sustainability expert, a teacher, and a fellow resident, Cangelosi has been newly appointed as an interim Board Member by the Sayville Board of Education.

The Sayville Board of Education feels Cangelosi will provide invaluable service to the entire Sayville School District.

SINGING BUS DRIVER - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students recently welcomed Joe Guida, the Singing School Bus Driver, who teaches students bus safety in an uncommon way. A licensed and a veteran school bus driver, Mr. Guida entertained the students with songs and interactive dancing routines, while teaching and reinforcing school-bus safety issues. During his interactive performance, Mr. Guida used colorful displays to highlight the importance of being cautious and listening to directions from teachers and their bus drivers.

PINWHEELS FOR PEACE - Hundreds of Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School students and faculty members recently created Pinwheels for Peace during the annual Whirled Peace Day event. Kindergarten through 5th grade students expressed their unique ideas of peace by creating pinwheels and colorful posters. They also recited poems and sang a variety of songs about peace in the world during the International Day of Peace celebration. APPLE FESTIVAL - The Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department recently hosted their annual Apple Festival at Islip Grange in Sayville, where a record number of people showed up to enjoy a beautiful, fun-filled day, with a variety of activities including more than 200 different vendors and exhibitors, as well as a Kid Fun Zone. Families were able to go pumpkin picking, participate in 2014 Home Runs For arts and crafts and enjoy various apple treats. Countless children enjoyed the $1.00 Charity (HRC) presented carousel rides and live music performed by Slang the Band and Southband. a check in the amount of $500 to Richard T. Margulis CEO and President of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center (BMHMC).

Enhancing Education Dr. Gail Cholden, Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children’s (CFAC) Committee President, and Principal of Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, welcomed more than 40 attendees to CFAC’s first meeting of the 2014-2015 school year.

The meeting was held at Edward J. Bosti

Elementary School; attendees discussed previous successes of the Foundation and suggested ideas for the current school year.

CFAC was established in 2002 to provide funds to enhance the education of children through innovative programs and materials.

The Foundation has

provided over $110,000 in grants, which have resulted in the purchase of classroom equipment, development of community gardens, greenhouses, bicycle safety programs, musical concerts, sundry kits for the homeless, character education programs and more.

LEARNING PEACEFUL WAYS - More than 350 K–5th grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School and their teachers recently welcomed Bethany Hegedus, co-author of Grandfather Gandhi, and the book’s illustrator Evan Turk, to the school. The author and illustrator gave a colorful video presentation about the story of a then 12 year-old Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and how his grandfather influenced him to follow a peaceful path when dealing with difficult situations in life.

The students learned the importance of being better listeners, making good choices, and showing respect for themselves and others through Max’s Six Pillars of Character.

GOING GREEN - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School third grade students recently showcased their creative and artistic talents by creating fun games and toys using recycled materials. The students were encouraged to think green, and design fun games and activities using recycled materials found in their homes. Students crafted bowling games using cups and a rubber ball, golf games using empty paper towel tubes, tape and cups, and a variety of board games from recyclable materials.

Seniors Shine More than 150 family members from across Long Island recently gave their beloved seniors the royal treatment during the Association of Generational Experts for Seniors’ (AGES) Fifth Annual “Savvy Senior Day” at Parker Jewish Institute in New Hyde Park, which was hosted by Parker Jewish Institute and AgeWell New York. The year’s celebratory event recognized 30 senior citizens across Nassau and Suffolk for their vast accomplishments and contributions made within their communities, including 74 year-old William Young of Huntington and 92 year-old Lillian Guadagno of Valley Stream, who were crowned 2014 King and Queen, respectively, and were awarded gift certificates for professional studio portraits, courtesy of Bradford Renaissance Portraits.

“It is so uplifting to be able to celebrate each year the many extraordinary seniors that not only live within but also actively contribute to our communities,” says AGES Chairperson Kevin Lawrence.

“There are so many seniors living on Long Island who remain agile and active on Long Island. AGES’ annual Savvy Senior Day is designed to provide seniors with a special public forum where they can deservingly shine among friends and family. Thanks to its amazing public following and strong participation, Savvy Senior Day has grown since its establishment five years ago and has had the privilege of honoring many wonderful seniors each year.”

Young, who was crowned 2014 Savvy Senior King by 2013 King Frank Zizzo, received this honor for his community volunteerism and contributions made to Town of Huntington’s Senior Center and Beach House. Among his other charitable efforts are distributing self-purchased gifts to local churches for children receiving free meals, promoting

hope and encouragement by meeting local soldiers and veterans at Northport VA Hospital by meeting with them and giving them hand-crafted flowers, assisting with citizenship preparation classes at Chinatown Senior Center in Manhattan, NY, and donating his hand-made flowers to fundraisers in support of various causes, including breast cancer.

“It means a lot to be named Savvy Senior King,”

says Young. “If I can continue to be involved and make a difference at my age, everyone else can do the same.

Savvy Senior Day is a wonderful thing. It’s a great vehicle for giving back to the many seniors who have done and continue to do great things and hopefully inspires others to stay active within their own communities.”

Guadagno was named Savvy Senior Queen for her 20-year activism with Long Island Society of Italian Americans (LISIA), which includes serving as an Executive Board member for the past 12 years. As part of her involvement with LISIA, Guadagno has helped organize day an overnight trips as Recreation Director, served as Chairperson for its Scholarship Committee, and has been committee member for LISIA’s St Joseph’s, Columbus Day and Christmas Dance Celebrations. Among her other charitable contributions are servings as a volunteer with the Valley Stream and Nassau County Auxiliary Police Departments, participating in the American Red Cross’ Widow & Widowers Group after her husband’s passing, and volunteering with AARP Tax Aid. She has also been a social member with the Red Hat Ladies, Catholic Golden Age, Sons of Italy-Celini Lodge and Broadway Theater Group.

“I was in total shock when I was announced Queen, it came so unexpected,” explains Ms. Guadagno.

“Being crowned ‘Savvy Senior Queen’ among friends and family was so humbling and uplifting. Earning this recognition is a direct reflection on the many activities and experiences I’ve had the privilege of enjoying with so many wonderful people over the past 20 years of my life. It is such a great honor!”

Adds Guadagno, “AGES’ Savvy Senior Day provides such an important role within today’s senior community. Not only does it allow seniors the opportunity to be acknowledged for their many accomplishments but it also inspires us as seniors to continue being active contributors and achievers within the communities we live in.”

Following the keynotes, Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto presented members of the P-TECH Steering Committee with a citation commending the launch of the school.

Dr. Francine Federman, Assistant Dean of College-High School Programs for Farmingdale State College, led attendees to the college’s Institute for Research and Technology Transfer (IRTT) for P-TECH student demonstrations. A group of 20 students from the Freeport, Uniondale and Wyandanch school districts showed what they learned about the leading-edge technology of 3D printing, using some of the state-ofthe-art tools available through the college.

Afterward, attendees toured the IRTT, a hightech learning laboratory essential to LI P-TECH student success.
