Superheroes Encourage Students to Wear Masks at School

Who makes it cool to wear a mask? Superheroes, of course. The social workers at Tecumseh Elementary School presented a lesson at the beginning of the school year, utilizing this superhero theme to teach students about health and safety, which included the proper way to wear face masks and wash their hands.

During the first week of school, all students were shown a video of one of the school social workers found on YouTube emphasizing the importance of wearing

a mask and reminding viewers that superheroes do so too. To underscore this message, the social workers created a large bulletin board in a main hallway featuring many popular superheroes who wear masks and drew their own masks on those who normally don’t have one.

Said Tecumseh Elementary School Social Worker Jennifer Shanahan, “This was a great introduction to make mask wearing appealing and it really put a positive light on it.”

The school nurse participated in the lesson by demonstrating the correct way to wear a mask, how to handle it, how to fold it when you put it down, and then gave a hand washing lesson.

Said Shanahan, “We told them the golden rule, either count for 20 seconds when you wash or sing Happy Birthday three times. So our students now model that behavior.” They closed the lesson with a coloring activity where students created their own masks.

“The staff thought the lesson was great but more importantly, we are very proud of our students for complying with mask wearing from the get go,” Shanahan said.

Tecumseh Elementary School is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to students with special needs.

Make Election Day Go Smoothly Be familiar with the candidates and issues on the ballot. Voting is a privilege and a responsibility, so voters should familiarize themselves with the candidates and issues on the ballot in the weeks leading up to Election Day. In addition to national or statewide candidates and issues, voters should learn about local issues that may have a more direct impact on their daily lives. The more voters learn about the candidates and issues in advance, the more quickly they can cast their votes and get to work or return home.

Election Day gives voters throughout the United States a chance to participate in their government.

The right to vote is something to cherish, as many people across the globe do not get a chance to elect the officials who govern their countries.

While Election Day is an exciting time, voters may find it frustrating if they do not take steps to ensure things go smoothly when they head to the polls. The following tips can help voters prepare for Election Day. Confirm your polling location. Polling locations may have changed since last year, and voters who have moved in the past 12 months may now have to vote in a new location. Voters can contact their local board of elections or visit www.Vote411.org to confirm the correct polling locations for them to cast their votes.

Voters should learn the hours when the polls are open so they do not arrive too early or too late to vote.

Bring photo identification. Voter identification laws vary by state, but voters who want to avoid hassles or holdups may be able to do so by bringing current photo identification with them to the polling place.

While such identification is not necessarily a requirement, voters who bring along a driver’s license or state identification card may get in and out of the polling place more quickly than those who do not.

Voting on Election Day is a privilege that voters should not take lightly. Taking certain steps in the weeks ahead of Election Day can make it easier for voters to cast their ballots.

Confirm registration. Voters can confirm that they have registered to vote by contacting their local board of elections in advance of Election Day. Sometimes voters’ names may not appear on the registration list when they arrive to vote, even if they previously registered. Poll workers can help voters who find themselves in such situations. But voters who want to avoid such hassles on Election Day can confirm their registration beforehand.

Bohemia Native Serves Aboard “Mighty Cole” During Remembrance Ceremony

By Rick Burke, Navy Office of Community Outreach A remembrance ceremony was conducted at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, on Oct. 12, commemorating the 20year anniversary of the terrorist attack on the USS Cole. The ceremony honor ed the 17 shipmates who lost their lives in service to their country.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Charles Mayer, a 2014 graduate of Connetquot High School in New York and native of Bohemia, New York, is serving aboard USS Cole, a guided-missile destroyer, that was bombed by a suicide attack while being refueled in Yemen’s Aden harbor.

The attack was attributed to al-Qaeda suicide bombers, who sailed a small boat near the destroyer and detonated explosive charges. The blast created a hole in the port side of the ship about 40 feet (12 m) in diameter,

killing 17 crew members and injuring 37. Sailors courageously fought fires and flooding for the following 96 hours to keep the ship afloat.

“The first time I learned about the attack was during boot camp at Naval Station Great Lakes,” said Mayer.

“They showed us a video during a damage control training class, and we learned about the incident and what the crew did to save the ship. That was the first thing I thought when I received my orders, I said to myself, ‘I learned about this in boot camp.’

After I watched the video, I wanted to go to that ship and coincidentally, USS Cole ended up being my first ship.”

During the memorial ceremony, a 21-gun salute was fired and taps played to honor and celebrate the fallen service members. A ceremonial wreath, made

by Cole Sailors, was laid off the port side of the ship in memory of the Cole

Heroes. The ceremony ended with a bell toll and reading of the names of the 17 heroes whose lives were sacrificed.

A number of Gold Star families were also on hand, to offer support and pay tribute to the Cole families, and to recognize and honor those who have lost a son or daughter, husband or wife.

“Serving on board Cole is an honor and a privilege,” said Cmdr. Ted Pledger, commanding officer of USS Cole. “Today’s Determined Warriors work hard to carry on the inspiring legacy of those who went before us.”

Aboard USS Cole, there is the “Hall of Heroes” in a passageway along the mess line leading to a memorial listing the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. 17 stars are embedded in the blue-speckled deck, representing the Sailors who walked that hallway over 20 years ago.

“The first time I walked into the ‘combat area on the port side,’ I saw the photo of Operations Specialist 2nd Class Saunders,” said Mayer. “I asked about the photo and learned he was the only one who had died while in the hospital. Hearing his story and how he died a hero, really inspired me.”

Mayer is an operations specialist responsible for standing watch in the Combat Information Center area of the ship and managing tactical data links in order to maintain integral interoperability within the fleet.

“There is a strong namesake to the Cole and it makes me feel proud,” said Mayer. “When I wear my ballcap, people always ask me questions about the history of the ship. We’re so busy working every day but it’s like we’re walking on hallowed ground and sometimes, you just have to take a moment to reflect on what happened.”

Cole is named in honor of Marine sergeant Darrell S. Cole, who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle for Iwo Jima in February 1945.

Cole’s motto, ”Glory is the Reward of Valor,” underscores the spirit of Sgt. Cole for his extraordinary heroism, his unwavering loyalty to his

country and his bravery in facing adversity without fear. His valor and sacrifices is a direct representation of the 17 sailors who lost their lives and the crew for their heroic actions to save the ship on that fateful day 20 years ago, and the resolve and warfighting attitude the “Mighty Cole” continues to embrace.
