VIEW Hosts 33rd Annual Bass Tournament

VIEW is hosting their 33rd Annual Bass Tournament on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8. Official start time is 7 a.m. and all fish must be weighed in by 3 p.m. at VIEW. A buffet dinner and open bar will be served to participants from 4 to 7 p.m. The winner will have their name engraved on a trophy permanently displayed at VIEW. Entrance fee is $100 per angler and must be paid on or before Monday, November 7 at the captain’s meeting. $10 of every entry fee will be divided and donated to the Senda-Kid-Fishing Fund and Challenger Anglers. The first 200 anglers to register will receive a free hat and koozie with entrance fee. Tournament shirts will be available for purchase for

$40 with $5 of shirt sales proceeds going directly to Send-a-Kid-Fishing Fund. Boats can leave from their home base and registration will take place on Monday, November 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at VIEW. TOURNAMENT RULES:

All fish, striped bass only, must be between 28- 35-inches and must be caught on rod and reel with live bait, lures or a combination. Boats may not leave their homeport before 6:30 a.m. No fishing lines in the water from midnight on Monday, November 7 until 7 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8; committee boats will be

at check points. Fishing is restricted to the Great South Bay and Fire Island Inlet, east to Moriches Inlet and west to Tobay Beach. Boat numbers will be provided and must be displayed. No fishing alone. Fish that are caught should be kept on ice; they cannot be held in live wells. All fish must be weighed in at VIEW by 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Fish must be brought in on the boat it was caught on. Any boat breaking down or needing assistance to the scales will be disqualified. Any boat assisting another vessel in distress will be allowed to weigh in late (maximum 2 hours). All decisions by the Weighmaster are final. All anglers must present wristbands to attend awards dinner.

Community Presentation

To Be Held On Capital Reserve Vote

South Country Central School District Board of Education invites the community to attend a presentation regarding the district’s upcoming capital reserve vote on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m., at the District office, 189 Dunton Ave., East Patchogue.

The vote, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 18, requires approval by South Country School

District voters for use of the district’s capital reserve fund, which was established by voter approval in May 2016. Proposed projects include security upgrades to camera and door access systems districtwide, replacement of handrails and interior doors at the high school, and replacement of the turf field (not the football field), which is near the end of its useful life. Paying for these projects

through the capital reserve means there will be no cost to taxpayers and the district will receive reimbursement from New York State in the form of building aid for a portion of the project costs.

The vote will be held via paper ballot on Oct. 18, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., in the Bellport Middle School gymnasium.

Douglas Elliman Long Island Makes A Large Impact

The Long Island division of Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest residential brokerage companies in the nation, has partnered with The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast cancer.

As part of the organization’s annual, year-long initiative Real Men Wear Pink, agents from Elliman branch offices across Long Island have volunteered as Campaign Ambassadors to raise awareness and money in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2013, Real Men Wear Pink has raised more than $40 million.

The brokerage’s involvement began in 2021, when Carlos Salinas, an agent in the Smithtown office, became the first Douglas Elliman Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Ambassador. Salinas found great joy in helping to make a difference and shared his experience with Ann Conroy, CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Long Island division. Inspired by Salinas, Conroy encouraged each Long Island branch office to establish a Campaign Ambassador for 2022. With more and more agents signing on, the Elliman team has raised more than $131,000 toward its $200,000 goal—and with plenty of fundraising

events yet to happen before year’s end.

“When I came to Douglas Elliman last year, my goal was to be one of the very best agents in the company while also giving back philanthropically,” said Salinas. “What better cause is there than to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The support of both Ann Conroy and Katy Cardinale, Branch Manager of Douglas Elliman’s Smithtown office, has been monumental in my efforts of raising awareness through Real Men Wear Pink and The American Cancer Society.”

Salinas, who has raised almost $10,000 to date, is set to participate in a large fundraising and networking event on Tuesday, October 18th at Prato 850 in Commack, with all revenue benefiting the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign.

Michael Furino, another philanthropic agent with Douglas Elliman’s Franklin Square office, has dedicated himself to serving as a Campaign Ambassador.

“I started my own charity about 10 years ago, through which I have raised over $1,000,000,” said Furino.

“When I was presented with the opportunity to become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, I was immediately excited,

since I was confident in my ability to organize great events and raise significant funds. It’s been a great experience for me to be a Campaign Ambassador for many reasons, including getting to know other agents in my office on a deeper level—some of them have even had personal experiences battling breast cancer.”

Furino, who has raised almost $20,000 to date, will host a Vegas Night fundraiser on Thursday, October 20, at Chateau Briand in Carle Place.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.

“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology

classes that have been adapted for individuals with low vision .

Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.

“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”

Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

Sachem High School East Student Named National Merit Semifinalist

Sachem High School East senior Siddharth Sheth was named a semifinalist in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Sheth was among the approximately 16,000 academically talented high school students from across the nation to be named a semifinalist. High school juniors entered the scholarship program by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). Semifinalists represent less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, including the highestscoring entrants in each state.

The program’s semifinalists have the opportunity to advance in the competition to win scholarships worth nearly $28 million in total. About

95% of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing after submitting a detailed scholarship application. Finalists are expected to be announced in

February.

The district congratulates Sheth on this outstanding accomplishment and wishes him the best as he advances in the competition.

12th Annual Chili Cook-Off Set For October 15

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness will hold their 12th Annual Chili CookOff and Fall Festival on Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. (Halloween Costume Contest at 3:30pm)

The event – which attracts hundreds of chili (and non-chili) enthusiasts each year – raises money to support programs for individuals living with mental illness and veterans. Admission is free.

Attendees will enjoy a diverse, delicious, and creative selection of meat and vegan chili dishes from local food establishments, area businesses, and local talent. Trophies will be given in several categories including a “People’s Choice” award.

There will be a myriad of one-of-a-kind vendors, food, beverages, raffle prizes, and children’s games including a muchanticipated annual Halloween costume

contest for children under 10 years of age. In addition, live music will be provided by School of Rock: Farmingdale/Sayville, part of the international music education program by the same name.

Suffolk County Grant Helps Bayport-Blue Point Public Library Improve Groundwater With Advanced Septic System

A $250,000 grant from Suffolk County has enabled the Bayport-Blue Point Public Library to enhance the quality of the community’s groundwater through the installation of an Innovative and Alternative (I/A) onsite wastewater system. Enhanced

I/A septic system designs have shown promise for removing much of the nitrogen in wastewater before it enters surrounding groundwater, estuaries, and ponds. The I/A system replaces two outdated sanitary systems. Because Long Island depends entirely

upon underground water for its drinking water supply, the regional environmental community has widely encouraged adoption of these advanced systems and has applauded the library for its efforts in this regard.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer On Long Island

The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement, will unite residents across Long Island on October 16th, at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5.

In its 29th year, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement embraces a bittersweet mix of purpose –celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, while raising

awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. “Thanks in large part to the decades of work and the dollars raised, a breast cancer diagnosis does not come without hope, and the breast cancer journey is not one that has to be traveled alone,” says Brittany Lawton, Associate Director, Development.

This year, female breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed

cancer worldwide, with more than 287,000 women diagnosed. Men are also impacted by breast cancer, with an estimated 2,710 men expected to receive a diagnosis in 2022.
