Sachem North Raises Thousands For Pulsera Project

Since 2017, the Interact Club at Sachem High School North has partnered with the Pulsera Project, a nonprofit organization that connects Central American artists with students in the U.S. through the sale of colorful, handwoven

bracelets, or “pulseras” in schools. In this time frame, the Interact Club has sold bracelets on behalf of artisans in Nicaragua and Guatemala at fair trade prices, raising a total of $16,715 for the organization. To thank

Sachem High School North for its generosity and contributions to the Pulsera Project, the organization sent the school a handwoven banner.

The Pulsera Project provides High School North students with a cultural

exchange. The building’s hallways are brightened with colorful art, while it is simultaneously providing a market for the artisans. All money from the sales is invested in people and gives them opportunities for higher education,

access to healthcare, loans for housing and businesses, environmental initiatives and more.

The Interact Club brings together students to develop their leadership skills while providing service to several causes. Through

their work, students have embraced the Pulsera Project’s philosophy that service is a two-way street. They have gained valuable experience at a young age that has encouraged them to be responsible global citizens.

Sachem North Student Earns Perfect AP Capstone Research Score

Sachem High School North student Ashley Edgar received a perfect score on her AP Capstone Research assessment, making her one of only 357 students worldwide to earn this achievement. Students taking AP Capstone Research can earn a score of 5 on their paper and presentation without perfect scores on the rubric, however, Edgar earned a perfect score on both rubrics. She is the first student in Sachem history to earn this accolade.

THE PLANETARIUM GUY VISITS CONNETQUOT PUBLIC LIBRARY - In a world of wonder, one can only imagine what lies beyond planet Earth. The Planetarium Guy visited Connetquot Public Library on Saturday, September 23, bringing the planetarium experience to all those who attended. The night sky came alive on a tour of the cosmos, a trip through the stars, constellations, visible planets, the sun, and moon. Continuing a lifelong love of learning by exploring the universe and all its mysteries. The library provides a nurturing environment for families to learn and connect as they enjoy a variety of programs together.

Edgar’s research studied how the behavior of goldfish and danios is influenced by melodic content and rhythm. She found that rhythm induces more behavior changes in the fish compared to melody. Through Edgar’s findings, future research can study the benefits of auditory enrichment of music on fish and other marine life to help reduce the stress from anthropogenic noise, or noise generated by humans.

October Fundraising Event Helps Pay For Funerals Of Loved Ones Who Died From Drug Overdose & Provides Grief And Loss Services For Families

After her grandson Gabriel died of an overdose in 2010, Grandmother Paulette Phillippe remembers how her family had the additional struggle to pay for funeral expenses. That’s why in 2020, to mark Gabriel’s 10th anniversary in heaven, she formed Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) to help families in need on Long Island pay for funeral and burial services after a loved one dies from an opioid poisoning or substance use disorder. In 2021, GGT joined forces with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), together they have raised more than $100,000, assisting nearly 30 families to provide their loved ones one final gift.

Says Phillippe, “I know from experience that many families may not have these funds, especially

after using much of their resources to help their loved one with treatment costs, in hopes of helping them become healthy and free from addiction. The grants provided by GGT only cover a portion of the expenses. Fortunately, several Long Island funeral homes, including Fives Funeral Homes in Smithtown and Patchogue work with the organization to help families struggling to pay for funeral costs stay within a budget.”

On October 29, 2023, GGT and LICADD will be hosting its annual fundraiser, “The Peter Sweisgood and Gabriel’s Giving Tree Healing and Recovery Breakfast” in memory of former LICADD Executive Director, Peter Sweisgood. The breakfast will honor Richard Buckman, Founder of the Long Island Recovery Association and Ed Olsen

(posthumously) for their contributions to the field of recovery. The Breakfast is an opportunity for families to share their experience in grief and healing during a casual, come as you are event. To be as inclusive as possible, tickets are priced at $55. The Breakfast will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Heritage Club at Bethpage. In addition to assisting with funeral costs, Gabriel’s Giving Tree has created a Tree Memorial and Serenity Garden at the Suffolk County Environmental Center at the Scully Estate, located at 550 South Bay Avenue in Islip. Called “Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Park,” the serene space gives visitors

the opportunity to heal and reflect. Together with LICADD they connect families to grief and loss services. For more information on a

The Parrot EXPO Returns With A New Location!

The Long Island Parrot Society is a nonprofit that is dedicated to responsible bird ownership through education and example. They stayed strong through the pandemic and have even increased their membership over the past three years. However, their beloved Parrot EXPO, Long Island’s only major exotic bird event, hasn’t taken place since 2019.

It is with great excitment that they are bringing back the expo on Saturday, October 14th, with a new location, a new lower admission price and of course, everything parrot! Timed raffles, presentations by avian enrichment expert, Robin Sullivan, face painting, a fun prize wheel and networking

opportunities will abound! Attendees can shop for bird food, supplies and even cages at great prices... there will even be some samples and freebies.

Live parrots will be on display and guests are encouraged to ask questions about bird care and behavior, which can be quite complex. Due to the overwhelming number of birds displaced due to owners’ lifestyle changes, allergies, infirmity and more, the Long Island Parrot Society’s Adoption Referral Service is constantly busy, helping to find qualified adoptive homes for these parrots.
