The Greater Patchogue Foundation held their annual St. Liberata Italian Festival on Saturday, September 26th with thousands in attendance enjoying great food and music, and to celebrate this year’s Italian American of the Year John Rocco. The Festival featured
a spirited Bocce Ball Tournament between 15 local teams. The winning team, Scottish Meatballs, defeated Double D with a final score of 11-9. This year also featured a special Bocce Ball Challenge between Suffolk County and Village of Patchogue officials.
In the Challenge, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco took on Village of Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri and Deputy Mayor Jack Krieger, and Village Trustees Sal Felice and Tom Ferb.

The Town of Islip Youth Bureau will be joining American Legion Auxiliary Post 411 in collecting tabs from canned drinks to benefit the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. As more tabs are collected, more funding will be donated to benefit the patients that are in need of care. HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS - The Town of Islip’s Office of Emergency Management recently held a hurricane preparedness forum at Dowling College in Oakdale. Town personnel were joined by representatives of the Long Island Red Cross and the Suffolk County FRES Department (Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services). Several speakers educated the participants on the importance of having a plan in the event of an emergency, and the lessons learned from past hurricanes that can saves lives and property in the future.

“Please help. I’m alone and scared. I don’t know where I am or how long I have. I never meant for this to happen. All I wanted was to hang out with my friends at a party. None of this was supposed to happen... Help.” Chapter 1 “Hey guys! I got this invitation to a ghost party... get your best white bed sheet out and get your party on!” I said to my friends over the phone. Emma responded “nice” and laughed. Joseph responded, “Got my sheet out and ready!” Alison responded with a laugh. Jonathan responded with, “Sure, if there is candy corn, I’ll be there!” and laughed. Ian responded, “Where is this party? And yes, definitely coming, just
wanna know!” “Ummm...it is on Maple Street...no definite address. We will find it. Gotta be the one with a bunch of cars, lights and music,” I said. They all responded with ok. “Meet me at my house in ten,” I said. Alison said, “Scare ya later,” and we all hung up to get ready. I didn’t want to wear a bed sheet because it seemed too old-fashioned so I put on an all-white outfit, black makeup on my eyes and half red, half black lipstick and some white shoes. My friends all arrived around the same time. We all said hello, got a quick snack before we left, got into my car and left for the party. Chapter 2 It didn’t take long to find the house the party was being
hosted at. We stepped in and were greeted by our host, Jackson. Jackson didn’t seem as normal as the rest. It was a pretty normal party - singing, dancing, eating, talking. But then something happened that changed all that. Jackson came up running toward us in what seemed like fear. After he ran past us, the lights started flickering. At first, we thought it was a joke. Everyone looked around for light switches and soon found out that the lights were fake lights that were put up as decorations for the party, and didn’t even have real light bulbs to light it up. At that time, everyone started to panic. Then a voice came out of nowhere. And then he came. And then IT came.

People concerned about breast cancer are now able to chat online with a social worker or breast cancer survivor through a new service offered by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The Adelphi program, the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country and located on Long Island, has been providing emotional support and information to New Yorkers for 35 years. Says program supervisor Heather Edmonson, “Our history has always been to respond to needs in the community. Now with so many people comfortable communicating online, we are making our one-to-one services available through this on-line chat.”

Resolution Adopted The Bayport-Blue Point School District Board of Education has unanimously approved a bond resolution outlining a major facilities improvement plan, which will now be put before voters on Tuesday, November 17th. Polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. at Bayport-Blue Point High School. If approved by the community, each of BBP’s five schools will see considerable building improvements, including renovations geared toward meeting current curriculum standards and to enhance learning opportunities for all students. Weathering the Storm There are few things as unpredictable, and beyond our control, as Mother Nature. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that hurricane season is not to be taken lightly. Gone are the days of “what are the odds” and “it’s never happened here” … turns out, “not always in your favor” and “now it has” are the answers to such rhetorical musings. Of course, most forecasts are still met with a healthy dose of skepticism, even in these parts of the region where that kind of cynicism resulted in some pretty substantial regrets not so long ago. Meteorologists’ predictions, coupled with dueling “models” mapping
out the potential track of various storm systems does not an exact science make. As a result, the tendency is to ignore such warnings until the eleventh hour and simply hope for the best. The same goes for blizzards, heat advisories … any natural occurrence that might interfere with our daily lives. How dare something as trivial as weather affect our schedules. Until it does. And we are completely unprepared. I will fully admit that I am guilty of such dismissiveness as well. To me, unless I look outside and see it for myself, it’s not reliable information. I don’t see the point in inciting mass hysteria among the public based on a “hunch,” a “chance of” whatever. Show me rain and

Golf Feastival a Success The Rotary Club of Patchogue, together with the Fuoco family, hosted the 46th Annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club on September 17th. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the tournament and dinner benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck, a retreat for children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities. More than $1.4 million has been raised to support the camp since the annual event commenced in 1969. This year’s Feastival featured 152 golfers at the golf tournament and nearly 200 guests attended the cocktail hour, buffet-style Italian dinner, tournament awards, raffle and silent
auction. Participants of the daytime golf outing were treated to various “Food Feastivals,” for which the event is named. This unique element of the day featured various Italian “Feastival Stands,” with foods such as meatballs, clams, pasta, wine, an Italian kitchen, seafood, a Caribbean Tiki Bar, gourmet pizza, craft beer tasting, an Italian Gourmet Deli, Zeppolas and Cannolis. In addition, there was a contest for “Longest Drive” or “Closest to the Pin” on every hole, as well as a “Hit the Green” challenge on every par 3 and a putting contest on the 19th hole. Brown’s Automotive Group also sponsored the hole-inone-challenge, which
had a potential prize of one free vehicle from the dealership. During the reception, camper Isabelle Valot and her mother Patricia Valot both gave speeches about the positive impact that Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck has on children and young adults with special needs as a thank-you and inspiration to the donors. Isabelle, now age 10, has attended the camp for four consecutive years, and spoke of its true magic for her fellow campers: “Everyone enters and leaves with a smile on their face.” Isabelle’s mother Patricia called the camp “a blessing,” because of the 21st century skills that it provides to the attendees,
like socialization, autonomy and confidence. “With its one-to-one ratio of camper-to-counselor,” she added, “the campers are really getting the attention they need. They feel special; they feel important; they feel wanted. So many of their needs are met.” Other guest speakers at the event included Debra Frey, who spoke in memory of her sister-in-law Marie Frey; Brian Kearns, President of the Patchogue Rotary Club; and Marcella Weiss, founder of the Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spooky Walk event and this year’s Feastival honoree. The 2015 Spooky Walk organizers Marielle Frey and Marc Weiss also reminded guests of their
October 16th-17th and 23rd-24th camp event, which has raised over 2.2 million dollars since its inception in 1989. The respite-based camp also holds special meaning for the Fuoco family, as Beth Ann Fuoco, sister of event coordinator Steve Fuoco, attended the camp between the ages of three and 21. The Fuoco family established the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival in 1969 to raise funds for the camp, to ensure that people like Beth Ann and Isabelle will continue to have memorable and educational summer experiences. Steve’s son Jim also spoke at the event regarding the impact Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck had on his aunt’s happiness during
her time there. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity and independence in a safe and supportive educational environment. Throughout the program, campers participate in activities such as arts and crafts, music, cook-outs, swimming, and boating. Board of Education President Anthony Sanseviro. “By putting the projects together in a bond we would be able to make necessary building repairs and enhancements that would enrich every BBP student’s, both current and future, educational experience.” The total anticipated cost of the project is $29.9 million. Of this amount, 68.2 percent will be funded through New York State building aid. For the average household in the district, the project would cost approximately $ 12.70 annually per one thousand dollars of a resident’s total tax bill. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera said, “Many of these spaces and building systems have simply reached the end of their lifespans and, given the advancements our curriculum has made over the years, other spaces are now inadequate to house our programs. This plan will enable us to preserve the integrity of our buildings, enable our schools to operate more efficiently and support the ongoing educational initiatives included in our Thinking Forward strategic plan.” Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Bayport-Blue Point High School on November 17th for registered voters to cast their ballots on this referendum.
