It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck welcomes back The Rotary Club of the Moriches and its annual Oktoberfest on September 23rd to 25th, rain or shine. Germanthemed food and drink festival celebrating the fall season will be held at the Rotary building, on Chet Swezey Road, near the camp. Marathon Partnership As Suffolk County gears up to again partner with Catholic Health Services (CHS) – the Medal of Honor Title Sponsor on the Second Annual Marathon and Freedom Fest 2016, volunteers including physicians, nurses, advanced practice professionals, physical and respiratory therapists and more are preparing to again assist as race medicine providers for

the 26.2 mile race, the half marathon and 5K challenge.

The race, which will start and end in Patchogue Village, will take place at 8 a.m. on Sunday, October 30th, and is expected to draw runners from across the country and around the world. This year, the 5K challenge was added to attract additional runners of all abilities.

Meals, accommodations, activities, and amenities included!

Some 3,500 runners participated in last year’s marathon raising approximately $160,000 to support local veteran’s services.

The funds were distributed to 19 organizations that provide services for Suffolk County Veterans.

They can complete the marathon, half marathon or 5K at a time that is convenient and receive the same registration packet that contains a finisher’s medal and commemorative 2nd annual CHS Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon Support Our Veteran T-shirt. They will not be eligible in the competitive awards categories.

High Honor Connetquot High School senior Caitlyn Kennaugh has earned the Long Island Arts Alliance’s “Award of Merit” in the media arts category. Out of a candidate pool of several hundred, only 20 students

were selected to receive this honor.

Kennaugh was nominated for the honor by her visual arts teacher Amy Miller and district Director of Fine Arts and Music Education Jon-

Michael Lasher.

“This is the first time a Connetquot student has been recognized for a Scholar-Artist award. We are very proud of her hard work and achievement,” said Jon-Michael Lasher.

Valhalla is 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Prior to joining the Connetquot Central School District, Dr. Adams served as the deputy superintendent chief informational officer for the Center Moriches Union Free School District, where she oversaw the curriculum, instruction and professional development for the entire district. She also worked within the Deer Park School District, beginning with the role of director of science and technology, which resulted in Dr. Adams implementing the Science 21 Program in grades K-5 and the creation of new courses. This position led to the appointment of principal of Abraham Lincoln School. She began her educational career teaching the sciences in the Valley Stream Central High School District.

The Connetquot Central School District congratulates Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda Adams for receiving her doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from St. John’s University.

Committed to higher education, Dr. Adams worked over the course of the past three years on her dissertation, titled “Sixth Grade Educational Placement: A Retrospective Analysis of Achievement Through Commencement.”

Through this study, Dr. Adams examined the achievement of students through multiple lenses as they moved through school systems to

determine if academic success was related to the configuration of the schools. Included in those lenses were the district’s enrollment numbers, tax cap implications and available resources.

“As a lifelong learner, I firmly believe that dedicating myself to receiving this advanced degree has strengthened my role as an administrator,” she said.

“Due to my education, I’ve learned how to approach curriculum, planning and instructional practices through a variety of lens.

There is not just one factor that influences a child’s education so we, as educators, need to be able to view the whole picture and assess contributing factors while guiding our students on the path to success.”

Dr. Adams obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Stony Brook University in 1989, and a Master of Arts in Liberal Sciences from the same institution in 1993. Additionally, she was awarded with

the U.S. Youth National Team. Cole was one of only two student-athletes from the east coast selected for this honor this summer.

Cole, who has been playing volleyball since a young age, remains on the direct pipeline for one day playing in the Olympic Games. Last year, Cole, along with her sister Taylor, were members of the school’s New York State Championship volleyball team.

Whether playing for the CHS varsity team or representing the country, Cole is generally competing in the position of defensive libero. Libero’s are within constant interaction with

the ball, and support the structure of the team as a whole.

“I definitely credit all of my accomplishments to my parents and my teammates,” she said. “My parents are my coaches and my mentors, and I just want to stay humble and hungry for continued athletic success as I get better and better.”

Cole has committed herself to Duke University and will attend in the fall of 2018.

Dystonia is a neurological disorder that causes repeated muscle contractions that result in abnormal, repetitive movements or postures. Despite being the third most common movement disorder, there seems to be very little known about Dystonia.
