Dr. Eleanor Smith will speak about her book, The Journey of a Lifetime, about a young Eastern teacher who accepts her first teaching position with the Navajo Nation. Although it is fictional, the story delves into the real subject matter of horrific abuses at Navajo Nation schools in the 1960s. The author began her professional career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a first-grade teacher at a BIA Boarding School in Aneth, Utah. Inspired by her love and dedication to her country, and by the words of President John F. Kennedy, she joined the Peace Corps as a volunteer. She received her Ph.D. from the Sociology Department at Virginia Tech and is currently a lecturer and has dedicated her professional and personal life to her family and students. Ceremony Celebrates New Interactive Walkway At Historic Suffolk County Farm And Education Center In Yaphank

On Wednesday, September 6, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk (CCE Suffolk) held the unveiling of a new, interactive walkway at its 272-acre Suffolk County Farm and Educational Center in Yaphank as well as the announcement of a new visitor center. The walkway was funded by National Grid.

Designed with multiple, life-size elements designed for visitor engagement, the walkway features a series of stations that highlight CCE Suffolk’s wide range of program areas. Among the disciplines showcased are agriculture, marine science, gardening and horticulture, camping, life skills education, and family wellness.

The Suffolk County Farm is a working farm that offers hands-on, research-based learning within a year-round, educational environment. It hosts 100,000 visitors each year, 20,000 of whom are schoolchildren.

The farm is also home to unique educational programs for children ranging from pre-K to 12th grade, summer day camps, a nature-based preschool, and special events, among many other offerings. Its 1871

Haybarn is listed on the National Historic Registry.

According to a 2019 report by the state comptroller’s office, Suffolk County ranked fourth among the state’s 62 counties in agricultural sales. The county’s 560 farms generated $225.6 million in sales.

State Senator Dean Murray, State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, and County Legislators James Mazzarella, Sarah Anker, Nick Caracappa, Sam Gonzalez, and Jason Richberg were among the elected officials participating in today’s event.

“Thanks to National Grid, the Suffolk County Farm now features a dynamic, new walkway providing an immersive experience that captures the essence of CCE’s multifaceted programs,” said Vanessa Lockel, Executive Director of CCE Suffolk. “The visitor center and walkway will together help the farm carry on its tradition of community learning that dates back more than a century.”

Connetquot Students To Appear In Upcoming Romantic Comedy Film

Connetquot students are ready for their close up! Recently, a number of Connetquot students had the opportunity to act as background extras in the upcoming romantic comedy film, “Love in Storytown.” Students were asked to participate as extras in various scenes throughout the film. Starring Ryan Buggle (“Law and Order”), Jason Frederick (“Baking

Up Love”) and Beverley Mitchell (“7th Heaven”), the film was partly shot in Huntington. The film is produced by Gemelli Films and directed by Candice Cain.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO COMMENCE CONSTRUCTION

New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) Case 20-T-0617

On November 17, 2022, the PSC issued a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) to Sunrise Wind LLC (SRW) to construct and operate the Sunrise Wind Cable Project (the Project), which is a 5.2-mile 320 kV DC submarine export cable from the New York State territorial waters boundary to the Smith Point County Park on Fire Island in the Town of Brookhaven (the Town), 17.5-miles of 320 kV DC onshore, underground transmission cable to a new Onshore Converter Station (the OnCS) in the Town, and 1.1 miles of 138 kV AC interconnection cable that will allow interconnection with the existing electric grid. The Project will transmit electricity produced by the Sunrise Wind Farm, to be located in federal waters approximately 30 miles off the east coast of Long Island, to the Holbrook Substation in the Town.

SRW’s Phase 1 Environmental Management and Construction Plan (Phase 1 EM&CP) was filed approved by the PSC on June 23, 2023. The Phase 1 EM&CP details several categories of Project construction, including the installation of civil works (e.g., splice vaults and duct banks) along certain New York State Department of Transportationcontrolled rights-of-way (the NYSDOT ROW Work) and necessary expansion work at the existing Holbrook Substation (the Holbrook Expansion Work), all of which will be located in the Town (together, the Phase 1B work). The Project’s Phase 1A work, which was previously noticed, remains underway at this time. The Phase 1 EM&CP details the Project design relevant to this phase of construction and provides both typical and sitespecific techniques, procedures, and requirements to be followed in the construction of this phase of the Project by SRW to ensure environmental protection and maintain public health and safety.

Construction of Phase 1B work (i.e., the approved NYSDOT ROW and Holbrook Expansion Work) is anticipated to commence on or after September 15, 2023.

prepared for weeks with outstanding results, earning second place in the yearly competition.

Under the guidance of Teen Coordinator Dina Oliveira and with the help of Teen Assistant Coaches Madison Holzmacher and Lilia Livolsi, the team

worked together to achieve success. Team members

CJ (Christian) Connolly, Varsha Karthikeyan, Laasya Mada, Eva Fagundes, Sofia Fagundes, Sophie Jamrozek, and Kate Murphy also won the Best Vibes Award, a non-scoring award voted on by their

peers. The day was filled with fun and adventure as teens from other libraries had the chance to meet and enjoy some bonding activities after the program concluded.
