More than three dozen teen art and design students in the Art League of Long Island’s Fashion Design, Architecture, and Pre-College Portfolio programs celebrated their achievements at a gallery exhibition and reception held in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery on August 21st. Students in the three programs, all under the umbrella of the newly launched Design Your Summer program, showcased the results of their artwork and designs created during the course of the summer. The closing reception on the 21st attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd of students, family members, and friends. For the past 20 years, the Summer Pre-College Portfolio Program has reached hundreds of teens interested in the arts, with some going on to art education careers in their

This is the time of year, in late summer, when all thoughts point north – to Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility. My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own. Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you
endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes. If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres
throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts. Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love. Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds. Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.

Having seen the impact of the program on the participants, the Art League recognized a need to provide students the opportunity to pursue other avenues in the art and design fields. In the summer of 2016, the Art League of Long Island launched Pre-College Programs for students interested in learning what it takes to become an Architect or Fashion Designer. Taught by established and practicing Architects and Fashion Designers, teens age 13 to 18 gained a deeper knowledge of these design professions through hands-on contact in their chosen medium, improved their creative design skills, and learned about these industries as a whole. Although there was room for many more program participants, attendance in the first year of the Fashion and Architecture programs exceeded early expectations due to the generosity of donors who provided scholarships for students to attend the programs. Many thanks to the following scholarship sponsors: The Dana Tengelsen Memorial Scholarship Award, The Lieutenant Colonel Joseph J. Fenty Scholarship Award, The Charles Schlapp CFP., Financial Management Scholarship Award, and the NYCB Foundation Scholarship Award. While the program may have ended for this summer, plans are already under way to make for an even bigger and better 2017! The Art League of Long Island is a not-for-profit visual arts organization that offers classes and workshops for children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels. Their art gallery hosts a dozen exhibits per year, featuring contemporary works by many local artists. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on weekends, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art League is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills. Adoption & Animal Welfare Day ASPCA Adoption and Animal Welfare Day celebrated its sixth year at the 41st annual Hampton Classic offering several types of animals for adoption. In addition to horses, dogs and cats, this year for the first time the Day included various breeds of rabbits that were rescued in a joint effort between the ASPCA and NYPD. Valerie Angeli, ASPCA senior director of equine and special projects, and Jill Rappaport, TV host and animal-welfare advocate, welcomed area horse rescues that took part in a presentation in the Anne Aspinall Ring. Those participating included: Our Farm Equine Rescue of North Salem, NY, which brought a large pony and a Thoroughbred/Warmblood Cross; the ReRun Thoroughbred Adoption of East Greenbush, NY, that brought three former Thoroughbred racehorses and the Kaeli Kramer
Foundation of Melville, NY, which brought two Mustangs. The mustangs were not available for adoption. They served as ambassadors for other wild mustangs needing protection. In addition, several local rescue organizations staffed booths with numerous dogs, cats and rabbits available for adoption. They included: Gimme Shelter Animal Rescue, Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, Tails of Courage, Last Chance Animal Rescue, and Shelter Chic. “It’s such an honor for me to be here. This is the sixth year we have been doing this,” said Rappaport. “This is really special for me because it shines a light on these animals in need. I am so grateful to the Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the most beautiful, special and prestigious shows in the world for allowing
an event like this to take place so that people can understand the plight of all of these horses around the country.” Four riders who have been named by ASPCA officials as EquineWelfare Ambassadors also participated: Georgina Bloomberg, Hayley Barnhill, Brianne Goutal, and Jessica Springsteen. “I think it’s very special for all of us to be able to come here and give back a little bit before we compete in this amazing horse show,” said Bloomberg who has served as an ambassador and ASPCA Board Member. “We are all very lucky to be here and our horses are very lucky to have good homes. Today is all about being able to give back a little bit and help the horses that are not as fortunate.” Goutal was the first Equine-Welfare Ambassador ever named by the ASPCA. “I have been involved with the ASPCA
since 2005,” said Goutal. “There is a huge population of horses that have been mistreated or abandoned or people simply can’t afford. There is a dire need to help these animals. I am really grateful to the ASPCA and it’s very important to make people aware of what is going on because the animals really need it.” Barnhill and Springsteen demonstrated the capabilities of two of the horses riding them for a short while in front of an appreciative crowd. Those horses, as well as the Thoroughbreds, may be adopted by contacting the rescue organizations that brought them to the Hampton Classic. Shanette Barth Cohen, executive director of the Hampton Classic, was also in attendance and addressed the crowd. “We are so pleased to have a platform to help find forever homes for dogs, cats, rabbits and
horses in need of a home because there are so many animals that do not have a home right now. We truly appreciate all of the hard work that all those organizations do to save animals in need.” The Hampton Classic Horse Show runs through Sunday, September 4th, at its pristine Bridgehampton, NY, venue. For this year’s 41st annual edition, a fourth FEI class has been added to the schedule in addition to more than 200 classes of competition for horses and riders of all ages and abilities. A wide range of hunter, jumper and equitation classes are offered at all levels, from leadline all the way up to grand prix. Classes are also featured for riders with disabilities. In addition to the six show rings, the Hampton Classic features a Boutique Garden with more than 80 vendors for an amazing shopping experience, a wide selection of dining options
and a Farmer’s Market, all on its immaculate 60-acre show grounds. The Child Care Council of Suffolk (CCCS) has partnered with the Association for Mental Health & Wellness to offer a series of Suffolk Action for Empowering Resiliency (SAFER) workshops developed to promote resiliency in children and to aid early care professionals in maintaining a healthy environment for those affected by Superstorm Sandy and/or other early childhood trauma. These trainings promote social-emotional health for infants, toddlers and preschoolers through outreach to early care and learning professionals, curriculum
implementation and ongoing support services. More than 70 early care professionals and others recently participated in a SAFER conference titled “Promoting Resilience in Young Children,” presented by Tammy Goddard from the Devereux Center for Resilient Children. “After taking this training, I now realize how important it is to reflect and understand where the children in my program are coming from and how it may affect their time with me,” described one early care professional. “Thanks to this valuable training offered by CCCS, I learned how to start conversations
with the children about their stressors, and I can effectively help them to ‘bounce back’.” The SAFER program is offered under the leadership of the Child Care Council of Suffolk and funded through the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) Superstorm Sandy Block Grant. High School Life Incoming Connetquot High School freshman students began the first part of their high school journey and learned a bit more about the opportunities and experiences that await them this year during a summer orientation program on August 24th. During the first part of the informational session, the students and parents in attendance heard from various members of the high school staff, beginning
with an introduction from Principal Kenneth Costa. Examples of topics covered throughout the presentation included the attendance policy of the school, necessary procedures for sports tryouts and the importance of getting involved with clubs and activities. Once the information session finished, the students were then split up into groups and provided with the chance to review their class schedules and
take part in team-building activities. In between activities, the students located and tested out their lockers for the first time. Volunteer upperclassmen were on hand throughout the event to guide any students in need of assistance. While taking a tour of the building, incoming freshman Sean Reynolds noted, “I am really looking forward to meeting new people this school year.”
New Staff Welcomed In preparation for the upcoming school year, the Connetquot Central School District recently hosted a comprehensive, three-day New Teacher Academy for newly hired staff. Under the guidance of Superintendent of Schools Lynda Adams, the teachers received detailed information
about the school district and participated in collaborative planning activities. Working as a group, they discussed a variety of pedagogical strategies and developed the framework for engaging lesson plans. The workshops also provided them with the opportunity to become well-versed in the schools’ technological
resources and learn more about the district’s policies and procedures. To further support their professional work and ensure their success in the classroom, the district will continue to mentor the new staff members and engage them in similar activities throughout their first three years of employment.

50th Anniversary The 2016-2017 school year marks the 50th year milestone in the history of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School. The school was the first of four co-ed diocesan high schools dedicated on September 8th, 1966 by the then Bishop of Rockville Centre, Walter Kellenberg. During this school year, St. John’s will host a variety of events to celebrate its history including the unveiling of a new library and technology center, an Athletic Hall of Fame Induction on October 9th, an Evening in Red and White Celebration on November 19th, and an
outdoor mass to start the school year. The opening of school mass will be held on September 9th and will be celebrated by the school’s chaplain, Fr. Robert Ketchum and concelebrated with St. John’s graduate and Vicar for the diocese, Bishop Robert Brennan. Several members of the Class of 1970, St. John’s first graduating class, are expected to be in attendance, along with the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kathleen Walsh, former administrators, and several of the religious sisters and former chaplains who

He assured students that there was no need to be nervous, for they would all be coming to the school as one big family. After his
introductory speech, Mr. Morea introduced Assistant Principal Joseph Licato, and guidance counselors Christine Valente, Katie Justino and Tara Sullivan. With schedules in hand, students ended the day touring the school to locate their respective classrooms and take a turn at opening their lockers for the first time.

Career Couture Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs jointly announced that the county’s award winning Career Couture initiative has served over 1,000 county residents since it was launched in May 2014. Career Couture is among the numerous services that are offered through the county’s Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs. Career Couture provides clothing, free of charge and without the need to return, to Suffolk County residents who are in need of proper business attire for upcoming interviews. “This is a tremendous
accomplishment and is a testament to the great work that the Suffolk County Department of Labor’s One Stop Job Center does for our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “The One Stop Job Center continues to bring employers and job seekers together, providing a one-stop approach to gaining employment. Helping our residents and our local businesses is critical to the state of our local economy, and these programs only further that aim.” The Department of Labor additionally formed a partnership with The EAC Network to assist Career Couture with securing and collecting
donations from different organizations, including from various wholesale providers, non-profit organizations and Suffolk County residents. “This is a classic example of a publicprivate partnership. EAC has been working with Suffolk County for years, we have many different programs, we have very effective programing, and this is certainly one of them,” said Lance Elder, President and CEO of EAC Network. “We are just pleased with the 1,000 people [served], and we have over 2,000 suits in our warehouse facilities for Career Couture. We look forward to continuing this relationship.” Career Couture serves
both men and women in Suffolk County who are registered with the OneStop Employment Center and have a confirmed scheduled job interview. The program also provides services to veterans and their spouses, and since its inception, has served hundreds of veterans. The boutique receives referrals from veteran shelters, family service organizations, nonprofit organizations, and walkins. “I’ve spent the last two years in construction, and after I had an injury, I didn’t have any clothes to wear to an interview. I had nothing but five pair of construction boots, some jeans and some neon green and
orange shirts,” said Erica Prince, a Career Couture beneficiary and an Army veteran. “With the clothes that June Kirby gave me, when I got to work, I received so many compliments, because nobody really dressed like me, and it made me feel really good. Whatever job you’re doing, you always need some form of dress or business attire, even in construction. It [Career Couture] has helped tremendously.” “Having an extensive experience in Human Resources, I know the importance of dressing for success for an interview,” said Lisa Phillips, a Career Couture beneficiary. I had suddenly found myself out of a job after 13
years, I now found myself being the interviewee. I already had suits but there was something missing, I was introduced to June Kirby at Career Couture, and she gave me advice on updating and accessorizing my suits. The encouragement and networking here assisted me in landing my job. It is a win-win situation.” Career Couture won a best-in-category National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award in 2015. Honors Institute a Success LIU Post’s 2016 Summer Honors Institute (SHI) welcomed 233 students for a week of intensive study and exploration. The largestever SHI cohort came from 22 states and Canada to experience LIU Post’s world-class academic instruction and abundant engaged learning opportunities, along with the professional and cultural offerings of New York City, during their week on the picturesque 307-acre campus. “The overwhelming response to the 2016 Summer Honors Institute is a testament to LIU’s reach as a destination for ambitious, high-achieving students,” said LIU president Dr. Kimberly R. Cline. “We’re
proud to offer these motivated students the opportunity to work with our distinguished faculty, and to experience the high-level, intensive study that is a defining characteristic of life on the LIU Post campus.” The “Entrepreneurial Leadership Experience” Institute, an extension of LIU’s longstanding partnership with Virtual Enterprises International, brought high-achieving business students to the LIU Post campus to study with faculty from LIU Post’s AACSB-accredited College of Management, now in its 14th year as one of the Princeton Review’s “Best Business Schools.” Students honed their entrepreneurial mindset and developed their
business skills through a variety of competitions, culminating in team pitches at the end of the week to a panel made up of LIU faculty and real-life entrepreneurs. Students pursuing interests in healthcare participated in hands-on workshops in the hightech labs at The School of Nursing and Health Professions during the SHI Institute, “Find Your Place in the Future of Health Care,” drawing on the state-of-the-art resources of LIU Post’s national accredited health care programs. “CSI: Beyond the Crime Scene Tape” made use of LIU Post’s fully-equipped ballistics, toxicology, and pathology labs, part of the first Forensic Science
program on Long Island. LIU Post’s Summer Honors Institute also served students with a passion for performance, eager to explore a range of disciplines at the School of Performing Arts. Working with faculty members who have guided the Post Theatre Company to 14 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Awards, students examined various methods to performing through institutes in dance, opera, and musical theater. “The instruction was incredible,” said Kendra Perry, a musical theater student from Jackson, Ohio. “We had amazing teachers. Every step of the way, we’ve had instruction on what to do and what
we can do better. We’re always learning new things. I’m from a small town, so we don’t have a lot of opportunities like this.” The School of Visual Arts, Communications and Digital Technologies welcomed students for SHI programs in fashion merchandising, investigative journalism, radio broadcasting, and digital game design, making use of LIU’s world-class facilities and engaged learning endeavors, including a state-of-the-art digital games lab and on-campus student-run fashion boutique The Student Body. “This program helped me make a decision about what I want to do,” said
fashion merchandising student Derrick Stevens of Bay Shore, N.Y. “There are so many different things to do in fashion, and you have to figure out what you’re passionate about. This week, we’ve seen the different sides of the industry and learned to understand the different aspects of how it works.” Additional programs allowed SHI students to advance their creative writing skills under the tutelage of the acclaimed poets and novelists in LIU Post’s Department of English and stretch their artistic vision in LIU Post’s art studios with inspiration from New York City’s vibrant arts culture.
