KNIGHTS ON BIKES DONATES TO L.I. FOOD PANTRY - On Saturday, August 13th, 2022, the biker group Knights on Bikes was out in full force bringing help to those who are less fortunate. About 20 bikes and a few pickup trucks met at Aldi’s in North Babylon. Using $1,200 from its latest fundraiser with the Knights of Columbus, the group purchased several shopping carts full of grocery items and made a special delivery to God’s Provision food pantry in Patchogue. Connetquot High School’s senior parking lot became a bright-colored canvas on Aug. 17 as seniors personalized their parking spaces during the school’s second annual Senior Paint Day. Carrying paint, rollers, brushes, stencils and design sheets, the students mapped out and created their designs individually and some with the help of family and friends. Student Government Vice President Mirza Mahim said more students participated in the event this year and that he was happy that everyone was having a great time. He explained that legally licensed participants purchased and chose a parking space for the school year at the end of the 20212022 school year. He also admitted that his design was a little more difficult than he intended, with a prospective business logo and Japanese lettering. Seniors Haylie Dorr and Cara Hodulick decided to collaborate on their themes, while Alyssa Ciccarelli, Matthew Plana and Jack Friedman combined their spaces to paint a huge American flag. Other seniors, like Samantha Tedeschi, decided to employ help from Class of 2022 graduates Kevin Lynch and Morgan Shurgin who assisted with painting of intricate details on a space of painted hands. The seniors are now looking forward to using their spaces as they drive up on the first day of school on Sept. 6.

The alumni, many of whom have moved throughout the United States, visited all three of the elementary schools, James Wilson Young Middle School and Bayport-Blue Point High School. They were particularly impressed by the changes at the high school where they toured the Hall of Fame, the technology classroom, auditorium, library, music rooms, cafeteria and the gymnasiums. There was a lot of reminiscing and laughter about the guests’ former experiences in the buildings and discussion about how times have positively changed in education, especially in the area of technology. At the end of the tour, members of both the Classes of 1970 and 1972 took a group photo in front of the high school. Dr. Hearney reported that both classes had a wonderful time touring the district. He also noted that the tour was “a perfect way for the district to connect with the community.”

The Class of 1970’s reunion was previously canceled due to the pandemic and rescheduled for this summer.“Wethought it would be a great idea to tour the facilities and see firsthand the great changes and upgrades to the buildings,” Mr. March said. “It’s a perfect way to reconnect with the district.”

South Country Central School District’s new superintendent of schools, Antonio Santana, took the oath of office during the board of education’s Aug. 3 meeting. The oath was administered by District Clerk Christine Flynn. Santana was hired by the board on May 18 to replace retiring Superintendent Dr. Joseph Giani. To receive this honor, 75% of a school’s athletic teams must receive a collective GPA of 90% or higher. The school will receive a plaque to commemorate this outstanding achievement.
