New York Blood Center has joined blood donor organizations across 21 countries with the Missing Type campaign to highlight an almost 30% international drop in new blood donors compared to a decade ago. Every second, three people across the world receive a life changing blood transfusion, thanks to selfless donors who answer the call to donate.

Participating blood services reported the number of people becoming donors and giving blood for the first time decreased by 27.6% since 2005. In the United States, there is a particular need for new donors with O negative blood, the universal blood type, and donors of minority backgrounds such as Latino/Hispanic and African American

Soccer Tournament was first organized in 2009 through the office of thenLegislator Jack Eddington in conjunction with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League as a response to the Marcelo Lucero tragedy. In 2011, when Legislator Calarco was elected, he carried on the tradition of presenting the tournament. Joselo Lucero, Marcelo’s brother, spoke to the crowd about the importance of having an event such as this to bring the community together.

Gershow Recycling sponsored and donated $2,000 to help defray the costs of putting on the eighth annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament, which was held August 13th at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex in Medford.

The goals of Play For Peace are to bring together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer and to use sports as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground.

The annual tournament is organized by the Office of Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco.

Missing Type campaign – first held in England and North Wales by NHS Blood and Transplant in 2015 – this year brings together 25 blood services from 21 countries, covering one billion of the world’s population, who are each calling for new donors to ensure blood donations and a steady supply for future generations. Throughout the global “Missing Type” campaign, A’s, B’s, and O’s, the letters of the main blood groups, will disappear in everyday and iconic locations in New York City with the help and support of organizations and local businesses.

The Missing Type letters will also be disappearing from famous locations in

Australia, America, Japan, Ireland, England, and many more countries.

Celebrities supporting the campaign include actress Jamie Lee Curtis and rapper LL Cool J. NYBC and Lauren Shields, a sixteen-yearold blood recipient who needed life-saving blood transfusions during her heart transplant in 2009, rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in support of the Missing Type campaign last week on Tuesday, August 9th.

Robert Purvis, Vice President of NYBC said, “New York Blood Center is very proud to be part of the international Missing Type campaign which has the power to raise awareness globally on the everyday need for blood – especially O- which is the universal blood type and is always in short supply.

The campaign couldn’t happen at a better time, as August is such a high

vacation month!

You can start donating blood across the U.S. from age sixteen, with a parent’s written consent.

O negative blood type, the universal donor that is most reached for in the E.R., is found more commonly within the Latino/Hispanic and African American populations.

However, these populations are underrepresented in the donor pool, and with the increasing population rate, their communities are in need.

“We need people to come out and support one another, by donating blood and your time, you are saving someone’s life, just like mine.

Blood is needed for transfusions during organ transplants or when someone is undergoing chemotherapy. Without blood and people who donated I would not be here today,” said Shields.

Coastal Cleanup Coming Up Keep Islip Clean volunteers do a superb job of improving environmental health with litter cleanup projects held throughout the year, but the upcoming International Coastal Cleanup offers a rare opportunity to turn

these local efforts into worldwide action.

Volunteers concerned about the marine environment are encouraged to register for the ICC through KIC and learn how to accurately note important details about litter and debris

on data cards created by the Ocean Conservancy in Washington.

The information gleaned from local waterway cleanups will be added to similar reports collected from around the world as part of a global initiative to track pollution trends.

Groups can work along land adjacent to water or by boat.

“Beaches are the most popular locations chosen by volunteers,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC. “However, the ICC is most effective when a

I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others?

Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components.

How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive?

Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?

Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow.

A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you.

Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset.

You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not.

Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

Summer Pages Twenty-three students are headed back to school this fall with a unique conversation starter after participating in the 2016 Suffolk County Legislature Page Program.

Now in its second year, this summer’s Page Program drew students from a variety of schools and majors, culminating in a graduation ceremony on August 5th.

Over the course of 11 weeks this summer, Pages got a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of local government by working in legislative offices, visiting various county departments and participating in the legislative process.

“These Pages were a bright, enthusiastic bunch who brought a lot of character to the Legislature this summer,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Each of the Pages brought something special to the table, and, just as it is in real politics, they had different ideas and interests but worked together to find common ground and ultimately, success. Suffolk County is lucky to have such innovative young leaders. We wish them well in their future endeavors.”

“I’m very proud of all the hard work the Pages have done this year,” said Minority Leader and 14th District Legislator Kevin McCaffrey. “They are a very smart, hardworking and determined group of young leaders who are going to make great strides wherever they go in this world.”

Pages this year toured various county facilities, including the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Riverhead Correctional Facility. They also saw the legislative process at work when they sat in on meetings of the full legislature and later held meetings of their own to craft and debate mock legislation. The civicminded young people assumed the roles of legislators, elected their peers into leadership roles, and held meetings around the horseshoe, following the same rules of order that real legislators do.

“I am extremely honored to have served as Page Presiding Officer for the Page Program this year,” said Brittany Grimm of Shirley, a rising senior at the University of West Florida. “It has been an excellent learning experience. I am glad to have met all of my fellow Page legislators and worked together with them this summer.”

“This has been an eye-opening experience,” added Tyler Person of Calverton, who served as Page Deputy

Presiding Officer. He is a rising senior at St. Joseph’s help shape them as the leaders of tomorrow.”
