Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker and Licensed Cosmetologist, whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes to You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: seniors at home, the home confined, hospice, sober houses and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space, and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Another unique niche that her traveling salon taps into is serving those who may have specific allergies or reactions to different products used in salons. Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me.

This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend.

Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey

or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always.

I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress.

For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish.

My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful.

Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the

particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me.

And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Mr. Macaluso began his career as a school counselor in the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, where he also coached young men in lacrosse and soccer. After eight years as a school counselor, Mr. Macaluso became an assistant principal at Northport High School, where he was able to utilize his counseling skills to further guide students and assist in managing and supervising a high school of 2,200 students.

In June 2008, Mr. Macaluso

assumed a new position as the K-12 district director of guidance for the Commack School District. During his tenure in Commack, Mr. Macaluso’s responsibilities included the supervision of counseling services for more than 7,000 students.

“I am truly excited to bring the knowledge and skills I have acquired over the past 20 years to the Connetquot Central School District,” he said.

3 Techniques to Help Kids Concentrate

Computers, tablets and smartphones can be invaluable resources for teachers and students. But when such devices compromise student’s ability to concentrate, parents may need to embrace various techniques aimed at improving kids’ ability to concentrate.

1. Discourage personal devices in the classroom.

Computers and tablets can expand learning opportunities in the classroom, but parents who want their kids to focus on lessons can discourage the use of personal devices, such as smartphones or personal tablets, in the classroom. As noted by the Child Mind® Institute, apps and web content are designed to be user-friendly and addictive. In addition, modern youngsters socialize through their smartphones. Alerts or messages from social media apps or friends can distract kids from their lessons, which may adversely affect their academic performance. Unless teachers ask students to bring their personal devices to class, parents can

discourage, if not restrict, their children to bring their smartphones or tablets with them to class.

2. Limit multitasking.

A 2009 study from researchers at Stanford University found that heavy media multitaskers were more susceptible to interference from irrelevant environmental stimuli and from irrelevant representations in memory than light media multitaskers. Students who try to do too much at once may think they’re getting a lot done, but dividing their attention among several subjects may make it harder for them to fully understand or learn their class lessons. When studying, students who concentrate on one subject or task may understand materials more fluently than those who divide their attention among subjects or those who focus on studying while also performing other tasks.

3. Encourage strategic breaks.

The Academic Success Center at Oregon State University notes that taking breaks can improve concentration and make studying more efficient and effective. When taking study breaks, students should set time limits on their breaks and change their scenery. Walking away from a book, device or computer screen for 10 minutes can help students avoid fatigue that can develop when they study for too long without a break. That fatigue can affect

students’ ability to absorb the lessons they’re trying to learn, so parents can encourage students to take strategic breaks. Once per hour might be enough, but some students may benefit from more frequent breaks.

The competition for kids attention in the classroom is greater than ever before. As a result, parents may need to encourage their children to embrace various strategies that can improve their concentration.

S

chools are often at the heart of a community. Schools are centralized places where people gather and friendships are formed.

Creating an environment where school spirit is strong can be crucial to building a thriving community.

School spirit can make people smile and bring them together for a common goal. Creating a balanced environment in schools also can help students feel more comfortable and happier about attending class each day.

The National Federation of State High School Associations reports that, along with showing support for their school, high school students with school spirit perform better academically, are more engaged in social and civic matters and are generally happier than other peers.

Those findings were part of a survey conducted by Harris Poll and involved 1,500 students who were asked about key factors like pride, academics and self-esteem at school.

n ability to communicate effectively is a life skill that can serve a person well at any age. Communication well is considered so essential that the Boy Scouts of America even require prospective Eagle Scouts to earn communication merit badges.

It’s never too early to help children become better communicators.

From toddlerhood to grade school and beyond, learning how to interact with others are necessary at every stage.

Developing communication takes time, but there are various techniques to help kids become better communicators.

Great communication is a twoway process. Listening is often as important as speaking when communicating. Parents can help model good behavior by listening and letting children express themselves before offering their own opinions.

Take turns in conversation. Rather than speaking at the same time or interrupting others, effective communicators take turns offering their thoughts. Listening to others can help shape what the other person might say.

Speak regularly with one another.

Initiate conversation frequently so that children become accustomed to speaking with adults and others.

Chat about where you’re going when running errands or discuss television plots during commercial breaks.

Movie Wednesdays at Premm Learning Center provide students with more than just a fun activity.

The exercise replicates the experience of visiting a movie theater, giving students the opportunity to practice good communications skills.

Premm is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to students with special

needs. Each Wednesday, the school shows two movies and students take turns functioning as ticket takers and concession stand operators.

When attendees arrive at the “theater,” they use appropriate communication to request the movie of their choice.

They receive a movie ticket and play money to purchase a snack before proceeding to the concession stand.

All Sports Summer Camp About 140 Connetquot school district campers, coaches and counselors took part in the 2018 AllSports Camp experience held from July 9th-August 3rd at both Edward J. Bosti and Edith L. Slocum elementary schools.

At Bosti, physical education teachers Michael Konsevich and Michael Oldis put together a fun-

filled program that taught the students basic skills in basketball, volleyball and soccer. Additionally, they played challenging games, attended newly released movies and visited local bowling alleys. District staff members Scott Ferguson and Amanda Ferguson were directors of the All-Sports Camp held at Slocum, where the

students participated in the same activities.

Exercises and drills were designed to teach students both basic and advanced skills to further their playing ambitions. These young T-Birds worked hard, made some new friends, and are excited to put their newfound skills, and confidence, into practice this season.
