A Life Science Safari
An expansive study of animal species was the main focus of third grade students in Julie Celecia’s class at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District last school year during an individual research project exploring different animals. As part of the project, students utilized laptop computers to compile
information on the animal they chose, including koalas, snakes, foxes, red pandas, bears, zebras and frogs. Through their research, students identified important characteristics that were unique to their specific animal such as life cycle, diet, habitat, classification and behavior. Adding an additional technology component to the
project, students used the Tinkercad program to design a model of their chosen animal and 3D print them for display. Concluding the project, students read their assembled project books with their peers to share their newfound knowledge on the animals they selected.

“CAREER CAMPER” PROGRAM - It’s never too early for youngsters to start thinking about their careers. On June 30th, at the Patchogue-Medford Youth & Community Services (PMYCS) Summer Camp Program, campers got an introduction to a possible career in the animal health industry. Each received a real working stethoscope, a doggie squeaky toy, and a surgical mask and cap as their gift from the Patchogue Rotary Club and Patchogue Rotary Animal-Assisted Therapy (PRAAT). Along with the campers and counselors, the featured (see attached photo) participants were: “Mac,” the therapy dog; “Polka,” the Guide Dog puppy-in-training; Nicole Casagrande (vet tech license pending); PRAAT administrator Cindy Amodio; and Guide Dog puppy raiser Kourtney M. Bevis, LMSW, Executive Director, (PMYCS). The “Career Camper” program is the brainchild of Renée Kantro, MBA, fellow Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow. Along with other Club members, Renée is developing a Rotary outreach program geared for our community youth. The focus is on helping young people become career-directed as they grow into adulthood.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. If you are interested in attending, please contact Ira Dunne at 631.793.4311 and also let him know if you need an accessible seat to sit or space for a wheelchair. Lastly, the Social Brain is available to attend group meetings to speak about head injury prevention. Topics can include mental health prevention, drug abuse, bike/wheeled safety, sport safety, concussions, anti-bullying and asking for help when needed. They will prepare your speech based on age group and your needs. One dozen eggs were delivered to the classroom. The eggs were then carefully placed into an incubator, as students learned about the 21-day incubation period, along with the parts of the embryo and egg shell as well.
