Parents Who Have Lost Children To O.D. & Fentanyl To Offer Comfort To Others With Memorial Rocks At Local Farmers Markets

BROOKHAVEN ANIMAL SHELTER • 300 HORSEBLOCK ROAD, BROOKHAVEN • 631.451.6950

gentle and sweet.

At several upcoming dates at local farmers markets visitors will see a unique partnership between parents who have lost their children to OD and members of the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD). At these events there will be healing activities for grieving parents alongside Narcan training by the SCPD. It’s all part of a new outreach program by the police to give grieving parents who have lost children and loved ones to overdose and fentanyl poisonings, with an opportunity to honor and remember their child’s life.

The SCPD conducts the Narcan trainings alongside a “memorial rocks and informational” station run by the parents. The parents bring purple painted rocks to the farmers market that can be inscribed with a loved one’s name. The parents hope to give comfort to other parents who have lost children and give them an opportunity

to create something with their child’s name on it.

The rocks are then placed around parks and other locations as a reminder of how many Long Islanders have died from O.D. and fentanyl poisonings.

“Writing a child’s name on a rock may seem like a small thing, but I think it is a way of saying to the world that their child was once here,” said Carole Trottere, who lost her son Alex in 2018.

Trottere said parents may also bring a small photo of their child to put on the rock.

Look for the Narcan training and memorial Rock tables at:

Patchogue, Farmers Market on August 6 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

N. Ocean Avenue and Division LIRR parking lot in Patchogue

Three Village Farmers Market on Friday, August 25

3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

1099 N Country Rd,

Stony Brook

Both farmers markets are donating the table space to the groups. For more information about the memorial rocks and “Rock the Island,” contact Carole Trottere at catrottere@gmail.com

If you have lost a loved one to O.D. or fentanyl poisoning, and you would like to incorporate a Narcan training into a memorial event for your child, or loved one, please contact Police Officer Bridget Topping at bridget. topping@suffolkcountyny. gov

Sachem East Teacher Named Finalist For 2023 Presidential Award For Excellence In Mathematics And Science Teaching

Sachem High School East teacher Dr. Scott Kennedy has been selected as a state-level finalist for the 2023 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This award is one of the most esteemed honors in the nation for teachers. Those who are selected are exemplary teachers and leaders in mathematics and science education.

Dr. Kennedy is the department chair for math at Sachem High School East and teaches Advanced Placement statistics and calculus courses. Outside of Sachem, he is an adjunct assistant professor at Suffolk County Community College and the University of Bridgeport. Additionally, Dr. Kennedy spends time teaching statistics to U.S.

Military personnel at Air National Guard Base in Westhampton.

“I am overwhelmed and humbled by my selection as a New York State PAEMST finalist. I feel honored to have the opportunity to teach such wonderful students from the Sachem

community every year,” Dr. Kennedy said. “I work in a department of dedicated, passionate educators and I really take this recognition to heart. Thank you to the students, parents, community, and faculty and staff within Sachem for the support. I’ll continue to give my all each and every day in this career that I love.”

New York State Finalists will have their applications submitted to the PAEMST National Selection Committee. Those selected as national awardees receive a Presidential certificate, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and join an elite cohort of teachers.

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the fiveyear life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need

for skilled workers, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,” Bonahue said.

“The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.

The next Parent Cafes will be held at the Middle Country Public Library in Selden:

September 15: Nutrition for Your Preschooler (4-5 years)

September 22: Feeding Families on a Tight Budget

September 29: Breastfeeding

Q&As

Additional in-person Parent Cafes will be held at the Family Service League in Bay Shore, the Connetquot Public Library in Bohemia, and CCE Suffolk headquarters in Riverhead. Free childcare is available at all in-person Parent Cafes. The initiative also offers virtual programming via Zoom.

“Parents are primarily responsible for raising healthy, competent, and responsible members of society,” said Vanessa Lockel, Executive Director of CCE Suffolk. “Yet many lack support and receive conflicting parenting advice. The Parent Cafe allows educators to build a space where parents can connect, enjoy breakfast, and benefit from the latest in parenting education.

“This innovative program offers a holistic, educational approach incorporating parenting, nutrition, and breastfeeding education,” Lockel added. “The setting also provides a safe and welcoming environment for addressing the challenges that pregnant women and new moms often face.”

Ms. Lockel expressed gratitude to the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation for underwriting the Parent Cafe program.

“It’s important for parents to find supportive environments where they can share their concerns and learn valuable, child-rearing skills,” said Kerri Reda, Human Development Specialist with the CCE Suffolk Community Education Program. “Staffed by sensitive experts in parent education, this program and its resources are invaluable to young families of Suffolk County.”

According to CCE Suffolk, today’s parents are in particular need of research-based information, skill-building, and support because many traditional supports – such as extended families, cohesive neighborhoods, income security, and community services – have often been in decline. In addition, various demographic, cultural, and societal dynamics have often intensified the challenges

facing many parents.

The National Parenting Education Network says that parenting education supports the health, safety, well-being, and economic success of children through adulthood.

A report from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families states that parent education reduces the risk of child abuse and neglect by encouraging parenting practices that promote safety, well-being, and permanency for children and families.

A study by Oregon State University found that parent attendees reported higher school grades, fewer behavior problems, less substance abuse issues, improved mental health, and greater social competence.

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is one of the country’s largest foundations and the largest foundation focused exclusively on healthcare across New York State. The organization provides grants to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable New Yorkers, bolster the health outcomes of diverse communities, eliminate barriers to care, and bridge gaps in health services.

Inquiries about the Parent Cafe can be directed to Christina Nadolne at cmn89@ cornell.edu.
