building, Clementine’s undertakings are both trying and triumphant. Discussing the first book of this series was exciting not only for those who attended but also for Children’s Librarian Lori Crimaudo. Seeing Clementine through their eyes and following her daily encounters with
wonder and humor, made it all the more enjoyable and only adds to a lifelong love of reading. After the discussion, the children painted their very own ceramic cat bank. Just another day of summer fun at the Connetquot Public Library!

A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close
for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Students at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Masera Learning Center (MLC) applied the sequencing skills they learned during the regular school year to a summer crafting project. They created a beach scene and personalized foam visors. Sequencing is an essential skill for children to learn. Identifying components and placing them in order with a beginning, middle, and an end teaches children and students in many special education classrooms how
to make connections and keep ideas in the correct order. Building Coordinator Lisa Newcombe said, “The students are engaged in educational learning experiences with every activity they participate in during the summer program.” For the beach themed crafting project, each student was given decals and icons related to the beach; functional things you do with friends and family and seasonal things that would be found at the

beach. “They were prompted with ‘Where does the umbrella go?’ or ‘Where would we find the seagull?’, the student would find the umbrella decal and place it appropriately in the sand on the beach, likewise the decal of the seagull would be appropriately placed in the blue sky above the water,” said Newcombe. Summer activities at MLC are sponsored by the schools’ Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). They are fun, educational, and inspire creativity.

The Giving Garden
hone their knowledge of horticulture by participating in all steps of the growing process. Seeds are planted in cut milk containers collected by leadership students to germinate seeds. Seedlings are then nurtured in the classroom until they have matured enough to be planted. The garden, which parents constructed from materials donated by the PTA, is composed of cedar boxes filled with organic soil to hold the many varieties of vegetables students plant. To date, the students have planted and harvested such crops as
tomatoes, squash, peppers, eggplant, beans, corn and fresh herbs. Reflecting on the impact of the project, Principal Christine DiPaola said, “There has been incredible enthusiasm for this project across grade levels. Career Exploration
Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) has shown young teens the importance of testing potential career paths. Each summer, ESBOCES holds its popular Summer Career Exploration Program for students entering 8th, 9th and 10th grades so they can experiment with potential college and career possibilities through two-week, handson introductory courses. This year the program ran from July 10th-21st at the three ESBOCES technical career centers located in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead. Federal and statewide education initiatives focus on ensuring that students leave high school properly prepared for college and adequately equipped to
compete in a demanding global workforce. These courses provide students with an opportunity to explore career interests long before graduation, show them what is required to succeed in those fields, and introduce them to career programs available in grades 11 and 12 through such educational providers as ESBOCES. To be eligible to participate in the Summer Exploration Program, students had to be entering grades 8-10 in the fall of 2017 and be 12 years old by the time the program commenced. Sessions ran Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the ESBOCES career and technical centers in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.
Course offerings included Culinary Arts and Baking, Automotive Technology, Cosmetology, Basic Pet Care and Training, and Welding. Said Rob Van Brunt, program administrator for Career, Technical, and Adult Education at ESBOCES, “It’s never too early to begin investigating possible career tracks, and our Summer Exploration Program provides students with the opportunity to begin thinking seriously about the livelihoods they may pursue and where they want to study. In today’s competitive job market, no one can afford not to be forward thinking about career-based training and education.”

Wenonah Elementary School students in the Sachem Central School District are gaining collaborative learning skills and an appreciation of horticulture as they work to provide the less fortunate with fresh crops from their “Giving Garden.” A project developed by the Wenonah Leadership Council in 2015, the crops are gathered by students and donated to Island Harvest, a nonprofit organization offering food services to those in need. Animal Care Program
Students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Basic Animal Dog Care and Training Program were excited to meet Investigator Turbo, a German Shorthaired Pointer, and his handler and partner, Investigator Hille. Both work for the Department of Corrections on Riker’s Island in New York City. Turbo is bilingual and understands commands in both German and English. He is being trained to sniff out drugs on Riker’s Island, specifically in the
visitor’s area where people are subject to a passive canine search. German Shorthaired Pointers are chosen to work as a sniffer or detection dog because they have an impressive sense of smell, strong hunting instincts, and are very smart and want to please their handler or owner. In addition to learning about basic animal dog care in the summer program, Teacher Laura Hille invites guests into her classroom to broaden
the knowledge base of her students. “It’s important for the students to learn how different breeds of dogs are being utilized for different types of work, the capacity in which they can work with these dogs, and career opportunities.” Students learned that it takes eight weeks for a dog to get certified. Investigator Hille said, “We begin with a dog that has a blank slate of abilities and we continuously introduce a new drug for them to recognize and find.” A simple method is used to determine which puppy in a litter will be a good police working dog. “We roll a ball through a group of puppies; the one that goes after the ball is the one that gets picked.” Turbo does not work for food. If he locates any drugs, he immediately sits and points to where the drugs are hidden. His reward is his special toy. Investigator Hill demonstrated Turbo’s abilities four times throughout the session. The visit concluded with a question-and-answer discussion leaving students with career opportunity information directly related to working in law enforcement and K-9 units.

Boxing Title The Connetquot Central School District congratulates Connetquot High School junior Ralph Clemente for being declared champion at the National Junior Olympics Championship event recently held in Charleston, West Virginia. No stranger to the sport of boxing, the 16-year-old had wanted to pick up the gloves since age 5. However, it wasn’t until he turned 13 that he first stepped into the ring and pursued his dream. Since his boxing career began, Ralph has been named a two-time Junior Olympic Metro champion, three-time New York State Champion and two-time National Finalist. Additionally, he is currently ranked as the number one boxer for his age and weight class in the country. Rather than drawing inspiration from the top athletes throughout the world, Ralph looks up to boxers he knows personally and uses their robust work ethic to drive him toward success. “I look at the people I’ve
known, and seeing them work hard in the gym really drives me,” he said. “I see local boxers coming up and I know that they’re going to be great, so it’s an honor to train alongside them.” In order to maintain his successful boxing career, Ralph knows that keeping up with his studies is just as important. There are some days, he says, that he’ll begin training at his gym immediately after school ends and stay there until as late as 11 p.m. before waking up at 6 a.m. the next day to repeat the cycle. He credits his training with trainers Dan Rhodes and Mike Murphy as an essential contribution to his recent successes in the ring. “I do a lot of cardio, including sprinting and running on the tracks, and then I’ll go back to the gym for strength training regiments for an hour or two, practicing the same moves over and over until all of my techniques are second nature,” he said. “A lot of people think boxing is all about working out,
but it’s really about mental technique.” Ralph plans on competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, from where he aspires to take home a gold medal for boxing. “I want to put my name in the history books for boxing; I want to be remembered as one of the greats,” he said. “I’m working hard enough, and I know I’ll get there.”

Lesson of the Day In Art Teacher Darlene Siracusano’s class at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Brookhaven Learning Center students are learning that it’s good to share! Sharing is really a life skill but it can be challenging. Siracusano used art as a medium for her students to learn how
to compromise, take turns, and negotiate. The students learned about finding joy in sharing when they read Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. “It’s about the positive aspect of sharing,” said Siracusano. “It’s not about just giving things away
but learning that sharing brings happiness and a feeling of doing good.” Together the students cut fish scales from shiny aluminum foil, painted their fish, and enjoyed the lessons of Rainbow Fish in their classroom.

Painting for a Cause
Volunteers from the audit and tax firm KPMG gathered at Brookwood Hall Park on a beautiful morning in June for the unusual task of painting designs on trash cans for a Keep Islip Clean anti-litter project. The group of eleven LESSON OF THE DAY - Art Teacher Darlene Siracusano and Wendy, a Patchogue- accountants used a variety of paint colors provided by Medford UFSD student work together on creating a rainbow fish.
the Town of Islip to decorate ten large trash drums with flowers, summer scenes and other colorful designs. The barrels will be placed at a number of local parks. Studies by KIC’s parent organization, Keep America Beautiful, show conclusively that trash cans with attractive and whimsical designs
encourage a higher percentage of use, thereby reducing litter in public places. This project is KPMG’s second outing with Keep Islip Clean. An employee group volunteered last year at KIC’s Project Bloom community gardens at Brookwood Hall Park in East Islip.
