n July 9th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Connie Kepert celebrated the opening of a new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant playground at Martha Avenue Park in Bellport. The playground was recently installed after requests by local residents for the Town to provide a new facility where children with disabilities could play. Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan When did packing become such a source of stress? Used to be, you could throw whatever you wanted into a suitcase, head to the airport shortly before flight time, have your family see you off at the gate and be on your way. Not so much anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the added security. It just seems like, in an effort to make air travel safer for all, it has become extremely inconvenient for most. But, short of taking a transAtlantic cruise, it still serves as the quickest, most viable option to get where you want to go. So that leaves us to suck it up and deal with whatever

hassles come along with our “relaxing” vacations. Having never flown before, this process has proven to be quite complicated, what with all the new rules and regulations – carry-on vs. checked baggage, ounces of liquids, Ziploc bags, and on and on… I must say, this is one time when the wealth of information available on the Internet has proven to be pretty useful. Nothing like hearing tips from those who have been there and done that already. But still, at the end of the day, once all the criteria are comprehended, there is still the small matter of fitting everything into one suitcase, preferably one that weighs

slightly less than a 12 yearold. Because, let’s face it – you can pack it, but can you carry it? Unless you’re traveling to some remote Third World country, chances are you will be able to purchase anything that may have been left behind. It just may not be quite like the comforts of home that we’re used to, that’s all. By the time you read this, I will have (hopefully) figured out how to condense the mountain of “stuff” piled in the corner of my room into my suitcase and carry-on, preferably in a TSA-approved, somewhat convenient manner so as to not give myself a hernia when picking it up. One can only hope.

I listen intently while he recounts his weekend visit with family, Grateful for their concern but content to live on his own – he explains. A small apartment in an urban town Insures he is still viable in spite of his years. A bus to board, A community of familiarity reassures him of his independence. Minutes fly by – chores to finish before the end of my day. He reaches for my hand and says “thank you” and I knew what he meant. His eyes conveyed gratitude for my time, and when he smiled, I witnessed a glimmer of a younger man. The sentiment “take care” is spoken, he softly says he’s hopes he can visit soon. The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything from the smallest tick to the largest shark can be found along the Fire Island National Seashore. In my 6 years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday. Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls. Types of marine life aren’t the only animals with a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

other land species have also been spotted. We have a myriad of bird species on Fire Island. It seems like each year, people spot a different kind of bird! Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys. Fire Island also has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. They are the most crucial part to Fire Island’s environment. Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature. These fourlegged gentle giants

Fire Island Ecosystem scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple. Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island. Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous. Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive. Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated. Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength. These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

The cost of the project is $1.76 million, with the majority of funding to come from FEMA. “We thank Islip residents for their patience during this recovery period as we worked to improve our entire Parks and Recreation system, post Sandy,” said Councilman John Cochrane, Jr. “The devastation to Islip Town as a whole was mind boggling,” noted Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. The Town Board approved the reconstruction project “Islip Beach was one of several Town facilities in need in May 2013, awarding the contract to Bensin Contacting, of major repair caused by Super Storm Sandy. Slowly, the highest responsible bidder. Work at the beach began surely and responsibly, we are chipping away at the almost immediately, and included the demolition of the damage in a concentrated effort to give Islip residents concession, reconstruction and repair of boardwalks, back the Town that they know, love and deserve.”

The Beach Is Back There was much to celebrate in the Town of Islip today, with the long-awaited and much anticipated grand re-opening of Islip Beach, located at the end of South Bay Avenue in Islip. Supervisor Tom Croci was joined by Town Board Members in cutting the ribbon to the new and improved facility that had suffered devastating damage from Super Storm Sandy in October, 2012. “We stand here today to reopen one of our greatest treasures here in the Town of Islip,” said Supervisor Croci. “Islip Beach has a long and important history in our community, and is a special place for so many of us. The overwhelming damage incurred here was a great concern to all Town officials, and getting it open and operational for residents to use as quickly as possible was important to each and every one of us.” Councilman and Parks Liaison Anthony Senft echoed Supervisor Croci’s sentiments. “Good government was at the forefront of every decision made relating to this massive reconstruction project. And by working together, today we open the gates to a new and improved Islip Beach.” Islip Beach, which was donated to the Town by the Havermeyer Family, opened in 1960, and has served as a bathing beach for decades.
